Ok, so I'm updating to Windows 10 from Windows 7 SP1.   The upgrade went smoothly after I finally downloaded the windows media creation tool found here;

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

The upgrade took a while and then Windows was slow after the install.  If youopen up the Windows Store app (Windows logo on a bag icon in the task bar), you'll see it's still doing a bunch of stuff in the background.  Ok, no problem, until I noticed a lot of the apps that it was downloading were failing.  I figured it maybe needed another reboot, so I rebooted and found problem number one.

When you upgrade to windows 10, the default login will be your windows live login, not the computer login you were using on windows 7.  After digging through LastPass on my phone, I found my live login and got back into my machine.  You will be given the option for logging in with your live id or a local account.  Cool, no problem.   I checked on the apps that Windows Store was having problems installing...still failing.  A quick lookup of the error code pointed to a windows activation error.  So I went to the settings app, Update & Security, Activation and click on the Activate button.  'Windows can't activate.  Try again later.  F-en great.  After digging, I found a way to activate via phone.  Here's the steps;

Hold the windows button and push 'R' to get the run box.  enter 'slui.exe 4' without the quotes and you'll be given a window with a phone number and a bunch of numbers.  Calling that number gets you to an automated system where you enter all of these numbers to activate.  It didn't work for me, so I was transferred to a call center (probably in india) , where the person explained to me that I would need to reinstall Windows 7 and upgrade.....bulllllllshit!

I advised the lady with the indian accent, who was obviously reading from a script, that I had used the windows upgrade tool that microsoft had provided for performing the upgrade.  After some silence from her, and hearing her talking to someone in the background, she told me she would transfer me to someone who could help.  When I got to this new department, the useful automated announcement told me that I had at least a 20 minute hold time.   Right now I'm still listening to that crappy microsoft jazztastic hold music.  This must be where musicians go to die.

More after I've escaped from this technological hell.

~update!~

After finally getting to someone else, they told me that the activation servers were completely overloaded and to keep trying.  Seems like Microsoft underestimated how much bandwidth they would need for this...figures.  Hurry up and wait.

I'm putting off upgrading to windows 10 for now. Maybe sometime next year when it's been around long enough to have all the kinks worked out. 7 is working just fine for me, so I see no reason to change anytime soon.

The reason microsoft did a staged rollout was so that their servers wouldn't be overloaded, I'm pretty sure that they kinda had no choice when releasing the Media Creation tool, on one hand if they released it then the activation servers would get overloaded, on the other if they didn't release a media creation tool people will complain, hell some people on reddit are complaining right now.

I'm going to wait a week or two before upgrading my main desktop, I want to see if ASUS publishes Windows 10 compatible drivers and and for Microsoft to fix even more bugs.

 Asus has pushed Windows 10-compatible drivers, or at least they have for their motherboards.

I've upgraded to Windows 10 Pro, and aside from a BSOD before I finished updating my drivers it's been running very smoothly thus far.

Why would anybody upgrade past 7, seriously. 8 sucks, and 10 will suck along with it.

The general consensus about Windows 10 would disagree with you.

You can't say that without using it yourself

Last time I check they didn't push out drivers for a lot of AM2/AM3 AMD boards yet, mine included

 Ah, I'm on Z97/LGA1150, which they've pushed out drivers for. Dunno when they will for AMD.

Microsoft is really bad nowadays, I'm not going to download it because I don't feel like killing my computer.

I upgraded to Windows 10 and my PC didn't spontaneously combust.

Does it have a start menu? I really doubt it.

I hate Windows 8 and so does every other intelligent person, 7 is the best, just an upgrade of XP, which was great. Sadly, I can't downgrade to 7 on mine.

Yes it does. Windows 10 is basically what Windows 7 is to Windows Vista, an improved version of the previous OS.

I'm waiting for my download to be ready. Gonna be testing it out on my laptop before doing it on my main PC. Just to make sure it all works for me.

That's exactly what I'm doing.  My main machine still has Win7.  Win10 works great on my Compaq 6910p that originally was running WinXP (I upgraded xp to Win7, then went to Win10).   The only hardware upgrade I've done is upping the RAM from 2gb to 4gb

One quick update on the Windows 10 store.  When I was trying to download apps like netflix, amazon, etc., I kept getting messages saying to try again later.  This looks like it was just an issue with the servers being overloaded.  Keep trying and it will eventually go through.   I'm sure this problem will go away as the initial traffic dies down.

How can you upgrade it and make it better if it's already broken?

Edit: Talking about Windows 8

Do you remember Windows Vista? It was quite bad until SP1 or 2. Microsoft modified it into Windows 7, fixed what fell short about it (especially in regards to legacy driver support, although by the time it released the new driver model matured and was pretty stable) and people loved it. Microsoft did basically the same thing from Windows 8 to 10.

Oh, or how about Windows Me to Windows XP? Although XP was already well into development by the time Me was released.

I have never used Vista in my life, only 2000/XP/7/8, and out of all of them I hated 8.

And a question, does it force you to download it? If it does I might have to sue Microsoft :3 (not literally)
