Random headcanon: In the future, Twilight discovers that she likes to feel the breeze on her tongue when she flies! Lol

 

 

 

I did this doodle during my practice session today. I wanted to tighten up my anatomy, so I'm going to do more practice work with sketches. I was also playing around with wing styles. There are several aspects of this piece that I don't particularly care for and I kind of slapped on the shading and her cutie mark, but whatever. Overall, I feel like I made progress. 

 

I like the idea of pegasi/alicorns having super long horse feathers and alicorns having slightly curved horns.

Here's a rough sketch I did of Soarin without his cutie mark. I wanted to work with bent wings a bit more before I move on. Here, I have him jumping out of a blank frame. Maybe I'll actually line and color it (and give him his mark lol) and make a background later. I'm not pleased with how his hind leg turned out, so I'll have to fix that.

I love your traditional art. The drawing of Twilight is incredible and works awesomely with your cross shading. The amount of detail you put into the hair, wings, and fur is simply breath-taking.

If I may ask; how do you begin your drawings?

I like to begin with three circles lightly drawn in the first layer for the head, front, and back end. Sometimes I'll look at a photo of an actual horse in a similar pose if I need help with the leg positioning. Then I lightly draw the outline in a second layer. The third layer is usually the face and ears, while the fourth is the wings/horn. The fifth is the mane/tail. I don't start to detail and darken anything until it is all complete. The reason why I use so many layers is that I am still working on consistency and it's easier to get rid of or change some parts while not messing up others. When I get better, I will probably not use as many layers. Hope that helps! Edited August 15, 2015 by Quartz Aegis

*Insert Disney reference* I think this is one of the largest images I've worked with before! It was a lot of fun trying out a merpony/hippocampus and I looked at tons of images of dolphins and other sea creatures to get an idea of how I wanted to do this. I threw in a fish because I don't really draw them and wanted extra practice. Besides, merpony needed a friend! I like the idea of merponies having larger pupils and shinier eyes, so I tried it out on her.
