Spike?

I honestly wonder if the writers would have an easier time writing Spike's character and episodes for him if not for the existence of the Cutie Mark Crusaders.

I'd like to know more about Spike's dreams and goals.

Maybe he dreams of becoming a world-famous chef. He has been shown to be good at cooking.

I think it would be a cool little piece of irony that Spike would want to be a knight. I mean in his dream Spike form he's got a lance. So that's a start.

Although I dont like him as much as other characters, I really do like Spike even if some of his episodes fall more on the weak side. I have always had a soft spot for him and still find him as an adorable and funny character even now.

Another reason why I feel fans give Spike such a hard time is because the other mane six are written so well that they expect Spike to be written with the same quality. It can't happen when he's not a main character. He can definitely be given some depth and whatnot but about as much as Discord and the CMCs are getting. You could also make the argument that Spike isn't really a character than could sell toys or isn't as marketable as the other pony characters.

As the little brother of the group who's simultaneously sweet, mischievous, and needy for a chance to prove himself, I think he works pretty well. As the backlash to him goes, I think many people are looking for an overly complicated explanation on the simple fact that the writers just haven't done a very good job on his episodes.

Granted, a lot of them seem to fall into the same trap, trying to differentiate him from the "real" heroes and ultimately making him too much of a chump for the episode to hit as hard as we're used to. But yeah, most of them were less funny than usual, less heartfelt, less exciting, all things that could have pushed them into perfectly passable territory. What he needs is simply a writer who's as excited/inspired to work with him and the qualities that set him apart as the other characters usually get. In fact, I do think some of his episodes (mostly in season 4) did just that and really got people behind the little guy, but Princess Spike seems to have returned us to the losing streak.

Back in S2, I remember at one point I thought of the idea of Spike being a secret 7th Element of Harmony but then I'd realize I'd be tampering with a power that's already broken so that's when I got the idea of him taking his own path to become a knight, being brought under Shining Armor's wing. It would give Spike a goal and we'd finally have two male characters interact together.

Spike is one of my favorite character, Princess Spike may not be one of the best, but, he's still a good character, he saved the Crystal Empire twice.

I think Spike's heroic needs are there when they need him.

Why do you think fans give Spike a hard time with certain things he can't control and always give the CMCs a pass when at least Spike has helped saved the day a couple of times?

He's possible the more smarter one in my opinion, if only he would speak up a little bit more aha.....

Spike gets turned into an alidragon in season5 ? (unicorn - pegasus - dragon)

I'm with you but there are fans who STILL say he never does anything.

I think Spike is AT LEAST as smart as Twilight.

Technically without spike twilight would not have gotten her cutie mark, then twilight would not have gotten into celestias school for gifted unicorns, then the main 6 would not have ever met.

Also spike probably has bad episodes because spike cannot (I guess you could say) shine on his own, like take lesson zero for example, all of ponyville would be a disaster by now if he had not sent a message to celestia.

I mean in my opinion spike could be the one of friendship itself..... maybe. I mean he was born on the day the main six made there first conection with each other. I don't know it's just my opinion!!!

Oh, this poor kid. I feel for 'em. The fact that he'll never be able to grow up with the info we know, his lost cause crush on Rarity (Something I'll touch on in a little), how sometimes he's the only sane one, being the only dude on a herd of girls. That last one is me in my friend group to a T. I really feel for the little guy.... But there's.. something about him. Namely, my gay-dar is going off the charts near this guy! Like, only using the his "crush" as facade to cover up his sheer gayness kinda setting off my gay-dar. Like, I can't even explain it. He just... gives off that vibe. And I'm gay myself so I should know,

The writers seem indecisive when it comes to Spike's competence.  One moment he's saving the Crystal Empire and being Twilight's faithful and intuitive assistant... the next he displays incredibly poor judgment.

I laugh every time I think back to when Spike tried to frame Owlicious for the "murder" of a "mouse".

I think the issue isn't so much the character as it is a lack of better plots involving Spike- they proved with the Crystal Empire episodes that Spike is able to step up to the plate when it matters most.  Twilight and Spike are (imho) one of the best duos on the show because they take turns being the voice of reason for the other one.

The issue may be Spike as a stand alone character--but given his personality is the supportive force, it makes sense he's at his best when he's helping others.

Here's a random question I have about Spike. What do you guys think of the idea of having him sing in the show? I know he technically has sung already in the Season 3 premiere but since he was just repeating what Twilight said, I really don't count it. If he did have his own song, what kind of musical style do you think would suit him? Do you think they would get a young up and coming boy voice actor to do his singing voice?

I don't think he's popular with fans.

I've heard some compare him to Scrappy-Doo.

How in the hell is Spike ANYTHING like Scrappy-Doo? They're nothing alike. Scrappy-Doo was added to the show he was in, while Spike first appeared in the first episode. Scrappy-Doo is practically forced as hell, while Spike's appearances are more loosened. Edited by Filly Lyra

I've wanted him to have a solo musical number in the show for a while now, ever since he got a (very) brief solo with dragon song in "Spike At Your Service." But that's only a two sentences long.

No need to get anyone else to sing for him - Cathy Weseluck seems to have a very nice singing voice.

Arias. That suits him perfectly. What I'd fangasm over is if he did his own reprise of "This Day" for some other situation than a wedding. But I can't think of a scenario of him singing it without said scenario permanently wrecking his trust with the Mane 6.
