  1. (Un)Justifiable Cruelty (Reposted from my Non-MLP Blog, "The Curve Zone") Like many people of Russian descent, I suffer from the occasional temper. Today I had a brush with my own dark side. At work I lost my temper on a biller who had been making mistakes in her billing files. After I calmed down, I wrote an email apologizing, and then I spoke to the liaison for the biller’s company. I felt better after speaking to the liaison, who agreed with my concern, but as I hung up the phone I realized just how easy it is to transform into a monster. The monstrous thing is not that I lost my temper. While losing my temper is hardly a good thing, the real frightening thing is how we as a society justify being rude, mean, or downright cruel to others. Yelling at the biller accomplished nothing, and it certainly made her job all the more stressful. The liaison helped remedy the situation, but in the end left me with a small feeling of vindication. The problem is, it’s irrelevant whether we’re correct or incorrect; being “right” does not give us Carte Blanche to hurt other peoples’ feelings. We live in a winning-obsessed culture. Not only do we love being right and hate being wrong, but we believe that if we are factually correct that means we are in the right. The internet has always been the playground where our argumentative nature comes out to play. Facebook, in particular, has dragged out the worst in many of us. I use Facebook as the example because unlike debating politics on a forum where your opponent is a stranger, on Facebook people debate politics with their friends, family, coworkers, and classmates. We get so caught up in proving our message that we forget the subtext and the impact on our relationship with others. Unfortunately an argument may prove a point while being demeaning to others. You may “win” an argument while successfully belittling someone you otherwise love and care about. In this phenomenon our opinions become more important to us than people. It’s not to say that our ideology lacks merit, or isn’t standing for the right thing, but our presentation of our ideology is harmful and disrespectful to others. Differences of ideology are nothing new, but when we are not standing face to face with the people we break down with debate we forget their humanity. We cannot always prevent others from taking offense. Even words without an intent to harm can still be hurtful, but we must have the wisdom to recognize when we are in the wrong even if our facts or our ideology is correct. Tone matters, as does the method by which we deliver our message. We must have the courage to admit when we are in the wrong. When we feel vindicated at hurting the feelings of someone around us because we were “right” then we become monsters. We like to believe that evil is found in large actions, but frequently it is the small ways in which we try to justify cruelty that we create evil in the world.
  2. I like the possibility of a gender fluid Big Mac. The clip was funny, because it's funny whenever they give Mac more than 2 words an episode. The episode's scenario could also involve the fact things are so mare-centric in Equestria and the Stallions do get sidelined a lot. While drag humor is crass, several stories with a cross-dressing scenario usually have to do with some activity, group, or situation which excludes a particular gender. Common scenarios: girl dressing as a boy to play sports because she's just as fierce. Guy dressing a woman to participate in an activity dubbed "girly" by society and discovering it's ok to be in touch with emotions in the meantime. Hopefully the take away will be that just because Big Mac is strong and tough doesn't mean he can't enjoy lovely things and be open about his feelings.
  3. To me a true friend is someone who loves you as you truly are & you love them as they truly are in return. In society we wear so many masks everyday it's easy to forget ourselves in the process. A friend sees through the masks we wear and understands us on a deeper level.
  4. I've only seen the first one, but I was definitely weirded out by the "human" versions of the girls. I think they should have had human skin tones and looked a little more... well, human, but with the iconic hair/eye colors. So true, so very true.
  5. I would like to see more CMC - but not as an active plot point, just a background thing where you see them in the clubhouse or selling muffins at a CMC fundraiser. The reasoning is that I would like to see the original CMCs finally get their cutie marks. It's painful watching Sweetie Belle not realize her singing is her gift... or watching Scootaloo do amazing tricks but not make the connection. Out of curiosity, aside from her studies in potion-making, is there an obvious cutie mark for Apple Bloom I haven't picked up on yet? Perhaps Apple Bloom could get a cutie mark for comedic timing.
  6. The writers seem indecisive when it comes to Spike's competence. One moment he's saving the Crystal Empire and being Twilight's faithful and intuitive assistant... the next he displays incredibly poor judgment. I laugh every time I think back to when Spike tried to frame Owlicious for the "murder" of a "mouse". I think the issue isn't so much the character as it is a lack of better plots involving Spike- they proved with the Crystal Empire episodes that Spike is able to step up to the plate when it matters most. Twilight and Spike are (imho) one of the best duos on the show because they take turns being the voice of reason for the other one. The issue may be Spike as a stand alone character--but given his personality is the supportive force, it makes sense he's at his best when he's helping others.
  7. Slice of Life for leaving me rolling on the floor-- I had been stoked to see the Big Lebowski reference in a prior episode, and was delighted when they showed the Dude again. Bonus points that the Dude's cutie mark was the rug. I love the animators' attention to detail. I loved the episode so much I got my husband to watch it-- he's not a brony, but he enjoyed it.
  8. A little bit of fear- not because of her power, but more shyness and embarrassment. However - it's hard to be afraid of her after the scene in Sugarcube Corner when the Cakes kept refilling her tea and she pretended to take a sip.
  9. Welcome FaithDragon - do you have a favorite Fluttershy episode?
  10. The destruction of the old home was sad, but the concept could have been used as an opportunity to address losing a home-- which they sort of did in Season 5. However, I surprised the Castle hasn't become a full-fledged library. I can imagine Twilight being far more distraught at the loss of books than the structure itself. After all, Twilight is the ultimate bibliophile.
  11. Winter Wrap Up isn't my favorite song, but boy does it ever get in my head at work. I'd probably say the CMC Theme song (when performed by Sweetie Bell) .
  12. Welcome Proxy Shy! I like your avatar.
  13. Same here. It used to be a great way to keep up with friends and family - my husband and I are isolated geographically from them, so it was nice to keep in touch and have that feeling of connection. Now it seems my Facebook feed is all politics or will only show a few friends' feeds. I feel more disconnected when I go to Facebook. I suppose one of the things that brought me to the Poniverse is to feel a sense of connection with people who have the same fandom.
  14. Every time I watch a CMC episode I keep hoping one of them will discover their special talent - even though that would take away the Blank Flank glory. Love Sweetie Belle's singing. There were a lot of feels when Luna visited Sweetie Belle's dreams and addressed the little sister resentment.
  15. Ironically, even with "Tanks for the Memories" and "Do Princesses Dream of Magical Sheep" there were also some huge laughs in season 5 (Princess Big Mac, Rainbow Dash's "Nightmare", the entire "Slice of Life" episode). Then again, I suppose I was in tears after "Slice of Life" when all those small delightful references and nods to pop culture came full circle I laughed so hard I cried.
  16. Obviously, given my display name, I am a Luna sympathizer. I agree with the critique that the story was rushed. However, I thought it was courageous of the writers to introduce the difficult topic of guilt. Generally on kids' shows guilt is presented as a one dimensional concept and very small in scale (example: someone breaks a lamp, feels guilty, lies about breaking lamp, feels guilty about lying). I could see that the topic would make some uncomfortable, and might be a little heavy for the young viewers. However, I thought the message was powerful in expressing how unresolved feelings of guilt can be destructive to ourselves. And, the show took it a step further by showing how when we let our guilt harm ourselves mentally it can have a negative impact on people around us (unintentionally). While the pace for Luna breaking her cycle of Guilt and Self-Punishment was very fast, it was still a beautiful moment. I also like that a reformed antagonist showed remorse later on in the series--I loved that season 5 went back to the very first episodes by addressing Twilight's neglected Canterlot friends and the psychological aftermath of Nightmare Moon.
  17. Thank you Kyoshi for the warm welcome! Diggin' the avatar!
  18. My Favourite Mane 6 Pony: Pinkie Pie How did you find MLP Forums?: Google How you became a fan of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic: I grew up on the 1980's MLP- when the Smooze accompanied Discord to the Grand Galloping Gala I almost died with laughter. Hopefully my display name doesn't cause too much controversy; I'm a big Luna fan. In real life I am an aspiring author by night with a very dull desk job by day. I haven't been active on an internet forum in years, but I thought it'd be nice to have discussions with other fans.
