What do you think Sombra is actually like?

There wasn't much said or shown about him in his premier, and the comic didn't reveal more than his backstory. I imagine that he's pretty much Cadence's counterpart, where he's nothing but bitterness and hate, and seeks pain and misery upon all other around him. I believe he can be manipulative, but not as much as he is psychotic, easy to make him enraged through even the slightest provoking. But unlike the average maniac, it's pretty easy for him to get you with his black rock summoning powers (which he controls like an earth bender).

He of coarse would hate Shining and Cadence the most, but he's more dead set on killing Cadence more than he is for Shiny which he thinks he's too stupid to be worth his time.

I honestly believe that he is the opposite of the four princesses, He loves the dark clearly, loves crystals, probably loves torturing and holdin ponies captive, slave work, and other things the other four probably would oppose of.

How he was portrayed in the show is how he is. He is protective of his boundaries putting magic wards to protect his property, he enslaves ponies, he has a powerful presence left lingering on the crystal ponies so great that he could come back from the dead through it.

For reasons that I do not know, he seems like he was a unicorn that despised Harmony itself. When he enslaved the Crystal Empire, he seemed to destroy any sense of Harmony that they had, which did not return until the Heart was once again active. Not sure what caused it, but Celestia said that hatred and fear are apart of this, or at least part of the magic that Sombra uses. Perhaps he was corrupted by hatred?

Oh, I'm sure he's really very nice once you get to know him.  He was probably unloved by his parents, and that's why he lashes out at the world.

Naw, I'm kidding.  I always just kind of imagined him like Sauron: faceless, pure evil, darkness incarnate, not really any "personality" to speak of.  Just your basic dark lord.  It would be much more interesting if there was a backstory in which he was once a likeable, relatable pony, and then eventually becomes evil for some believable reason.  Something like that.

I like to think that Sombra, for some unknown reason, attempted (and subsequently succeeded in) harnessing the magic of the Alicorns and was consumed by its power.

Maybe he was a good king who sought a greater power to protect his people but was unable to keep it in check and became corrupt.

Or maybe he was just a huge douche who lusted after the forbidden magic and used it to further his own dark ambitions.

In either case, I think that it was dark magic that transformed Sombra from a normal unicorn into the shadow-formed monster that we saw in the show.

If you go by the comics, he is actually a living shadow created specifically to destroy the Chrystal heart by a sentient red Crystal who claimed to be his mother. When he was formed he was made into a little colt whom wandered into the crystal empire and only knew one word to say at first

"Sombra"

So it became his name

He grew up shunned and bullied by the crystal ponies save for one whom served as his love interest. He ended up meeting the Crystal again and he ended up joining her and became the Sombra we saw in the show. (really cliche, but hey its there)

We also know from the comics that there is an alternate version of Sombra who did not give into his strange origin and became a good ruler.

So basically he's like Sephiroth, he's fine till you tell him who his mommy is.

I like to think that he's secretly a bit of a mamma's boy. Always seeking knowledge from her, always keeping her remains in his possession and always in worry which soon grows to panic when he hasn't heard anything from her for a long enough period of time.

Sombra's basically anakin skywalker.

He had one friend growing up who's more or less his girlfriend, Radiant hope. She was the ONE thing in his life that made him happy. However, he ended up becoming scared to death that she was about to be taken away from him as he thought she was going to be taken by celestia and Luna to be made a princess, which drove him to evil in the same way that Anakin was driven to the darkside due to his fear of losing padme.

I like the headcanon that he's like Hodor, except instead of saying his own name, the only thing he says is:

....Staaaaaaiiiiiirrrrrrrrsssss....

I think he's a pretty nice lad...I mean...he could be a perfectly harmless pony that's being controlled by the dark master like what happened to Cinda in Spyro: a new beginning...(Hey...you never know) :3
