I'm all for backwards compatibility on newer systems. I'm one of those guys who has held on to all my previous generation games throughout the years and, well... they've been kinda just collecting dust these past few years. I actually really enjoyed the PS3's emulation of PS1 titles, despite the occasional glitch or crash, and I'd love to pop in some of the old PS2 games again for a trip down memory lane. Sure, they might be well outdated by now, but I also feel older titles have a certain charm to them that isn't present in most games today. A time when it wasn't really all about the grandeur & flashy scenes of it all. It's the same reason as why I like older movies from the 60's & 70's. :please:

If you're willing to modify your PS3, there are ways to get PS2 games working on the PS3.

As I said, it MIGHT just be the classics returning to the store because they never explicitly said they were bringing back the ability to play physical media. But I SINCERELY HOPE THEY ARE because I've got FF8, FF9, Chrono Cross, and such that I would love to play but I prefer the PS4 controller to the PS3. That would motivate me to play them.

I know that digital distribution is becoming mainstream, but I love physical media :D (but without DRM bullshit). :D

You're right about the PS4 controller. It really felt good in the hands. played a console demo in the local game store. Unfortunately, the game demos where not interesting, just another Generic Sportgame number d245777abca64ece2d5d7ca0d19fddb6.png.

I still need a PS2 console and a couple of PS2 memory cards, so a PS4 may not be a viable option for PS1/2 games for me.

The PS4 would probably save games internally on the hard drive.

I saw this about a week ago, i thought it was just PS2 emulation? To be honest i'm not that concerned about backwards compatibility, if i wanted to play PS1 and PS2 games i'll just turn those consoles on and play them on their. It's a nice feature to have though for sure.

I don't think this will be disc based because they're completely different hardware structures, unless it's something similar to what the Xbox One is doing.

I think this is best for people that are new to Playstation or if they don't have their PS1's and PS2's anymore.

There's news. No PS1 games playable. Just a few PS2 games as downloadable.

Seems like I had too high expectations for it.

Why can't they just port over the PS1/2 classics from the PSN library? Is it really that hard to get them to work on the PS4?

It looks like Sony is giving up physical media.

Nah, Sony was the one who pushed for it with this gen. What they are doing though is trying to make a quick buck reselling games. >_>

The PS4 and the XBOX ONE are late to the party. Nintendo has offered backwords compatibility since the Wii (Yes I know that the ps3 had it aswell but it did not last) and still offers it today on the Wii U. I don't like the console debate because I love games just as much as the next guy and don't care what platform they're on :)

At this point I don't really think that backwards compatibility is really as big a deal as it was 2 years ago. After 2 years a lot of people have basically already accepted they will need their old hardware to play their last gen games.

So apparently this feature launches today. With some of the new info, I gotta say...Sony is dropping the ball hardcore with this. First one, discs are not supported in any way at all. That is a first strike. Secondly, you have to repurchase these games no matter what, as any PS2 classics purchased on your PS3 will not work and three, there are only gonna be 8 games out of the gate. I remember some people being so very upset about the Xbox One starting with over 100 titles when the feature was introduced. This is abysmal in comparison. And on the Xbox One, your discs will work! Though you have to be connected to the internet for the initial download as far as I know. Not to mention, PS3 games are not included in on this at this point.

It is honestly disappointing, I really thought Sony was gonna do something special with this, but even Microsoft has made something far better in terms of backwards compatibility. I am hoping Sony can improve this feature somehow, if possible.

I think they're promoting digital distribution more than their own Blu-Ray.

They seem to be promoting them evenly. Remember the PS4 was the one to make FUN OF the Xbox for not allowing the sale of used games before they made the change.

I agree wholeheartedly, Sony got cocky that they were ahead so they thought they could get more money by reselling old games at a higher price.

There is a MINOR silver lining. I wouldn't say it makes it better than the Xbox (especially in its current state) but there are three major things this does that I can see as a good "start". The games are properly upscaled sot they don't look like total crap on a 1080p TV, so it makes this a better way to play them, they are games that are older than last gen which the Xbox has not done yet for original Xbox games, and trophy support.

This feature is pretty crap in its current state, but maybe Sony will listen to the backlash as Microsoft has done in the past and make it so if you own these games you don't have to buy them and can just re-download them like the Xbox One. I would love to have my GTA 3 enhanced with trophies and look better on my HDTV. So while this is absolutely garbage in its current state, it MIGHT be a lot better if improvement happens. I'll wait and see, but right now I still have a PS2, so backwards compatibility was never really an issue for me.

Can't deny that, but now it's Microsoft who's laughing.

I have one Blu-Ra- player in my home, but my family still buy DVD's. It's not because they're boycotting Sony, but they're fine with DVD's.

And the Avatar Blu-Ray debacle (a film that should've introduced the system to the public) caused many have doubts in the system. Not a way to promote your system.

I wouldn't say that. Microsoft still hasn't introduced original Xbox games and the 100 games on their list 6+ of them you could already get on the Xbox One and a lot of them are random no name games that no one really played that much. So really, I'd say NINTENDO are the ones who are laughing.

I still have my PS2 & 3 plus I have PS4 so I would love to play my favorite games on one system without having to switch the systems out. My systems are still in good working order.

Would be great... If we didn't have to repurchase them.

It was nice until I discovered it is merely just re-releasing PS1/PS2 classics on the Playstation Store for $15 each. And there's like, 7 that are available from the emulation's launch.

So...kind of a bummer  >_>
