Solar yelped as she rolled downward in the sand, sliding to a stop on the flattened surface. "Ten outta ten service, though the in-flight movie was crap." She smirked at her friend, getting up and shaking sand off her coat and mane.

 

 

 

She raised an eyebrow as she overheard, and saw in the distance, another stallion giving orders. She leaned over to Amber.

"Can you tell me either who that is, or why we should listen to him?"

 

"Thank you for leaving feedback, valued customer." She grinned devilishly at Solar. "I'm sure we can make the in-flight movie more...interesting next time." She winked, getting the last of the sand off her suit.

 

"Meh, I dunno who he is." She squinted trying to see the pony a bit more clearly, but the sun was a painful blocker. "Maybe he was some important pony back at Icarus, I don't care. But y'know, I guess we might as well follow whatever orders he just gave." A pause. "...what orders did he just give?"

Flamestreak watched the two mares frolick around in the sand, sighing disapprovingly Flame flew up to the top of sand dune catching up with the rest of group

 

"I hope those two know they won't be able to call each other "just friends" after this." Flame mumbled under his breath.

 

Lightning Spark stood at the top of the dune. "Okay everypony, listen up! If you see any extra-shiny sand, grab one of the tubes with some water, pour some sand in, and the press the blue button at the top. If the water turns blue, then start collecting that sand!" Hopefully, he thought, we'll be able to find enough sodium calcite to get the life-support system back up.

Scarlett stopped at the base of the dune and waited for Aqua to catch up with her before carrying on. She activated her radio after hearing all of the fuss about fillyroolers and the new ponies, she said "Right, quick status update. First, yes I have a daughter and no I don't want to talk about it. Second, leave the two lovers alone. They can handle themselves, and eachother. And third, that scientist is right. You need to check sand on a lakebed to see if it contains Sodium Calcite, aka the material that is going to save our lives. We have 10 hours to get this done, so get moving! If you find good material, fill your saddlebags up with as much as you can carry and bring it back to the gate!"

Solar smirked and winked back at Amber, blushing a bit. "That can be arranged."

 

She blinked and tilted her head. "Something about sand? And... water, which there is none of around here. I dunno." She shrugged. "I guess Scarlett will know, she's all about sand and water if there's science in them."

 

"Wooh, we come all the way out here for some sand and water. Well, I guess we found the sand at least. Go team." She muttered unenthusiastically, kicking up a bit of the sand under her hoof. "But funnily enough, sand and water don't mix often." She laughed a bit, but begrudgingly returned to scouring the ground for any source of this watery sand thing that Scarlett wanted.

 

The dunes they were in were so large that most of the low-hanging sunlight was blocked out, making large shadows cover the ground.

"Wooh, we come all the way out here for some sand and water. Well, I guess we found the sand at least. Go team." She muttered unenthusiastically, kicking up a bit of the sand under her hoof. "But funnily enough, sand and water don't mix often." She laughed a bit, but begrudgingly returned to scouring the ground for any source of this watery sand thing that Scarlett wanted.

 

The dunes they were in were so large that most of the low-hanging sunlight was blocked out, making large shadows cover the ground.

 

"We need to find sand," Solar muttered, then glanced down to her hooves before letting out the most sarcastic gasp she could manage, "Sweet mother of Luna, where are we ever going to find sand around here?!"

 

She noticed the huge shadows she and Amber were casting, and started making poses to amuse herself.

Lightning, noticing the two mares in the distance, radioed directly to them. "Hey, uhh, just in case you were wondering, you have to look for extra shiny sand. If you find some, put it in the substance tester, that little tube with water in it, and click the button on top. If the water turns blue, radio back, we can start collecting that sodium calcite. Oh, and tell that other mare what I just told you." With that suit, he thought, they should be the ones to find the sodium calcite.

Amber giggled, playfully nudging the mare ever so slightly as she tried to pull one pose, making her fall flat on the sand. "Come on Solar, miss bossy pony wants us to find wet sand, so we gotta get wet sand." She rolled her eyes, lifting Solar back up onto her feet. "Now come on, otherwise Scarlett will think we're slacking or something."

A mouth full of sand. "Yuck yuck yuck yuck!" Her hooves scrambled to get as much of it off her tongue as possible, but she froze in the middle of doing so. "Wait a thecond!" Her words were slurred by having her tongue poked out. "Tholar! Wet Thand!"

And with that, Lightning trotted off in the direction of the alleged fillyfoolers.

"There's moisture in the middle of a desert," Solar pointed out, smirking at her friend, "What would you call it, professor?"

 

She grinned at the thought, and fluttered her wings happily. "Sweet! And we didn't need no fancy-pants science to do it either! Score one for the not-nerds!"

 

"Well I dunno! I just know this sand is wet. And wet means mission accomplished." She grinned smugly, grabbing some of the sand in her hooves. "Now, uh, what are we meant to do with it?" Her eyes grew wide and she facehoofed. Hard. "I have already completely forgotten what Scarlett told me to do. Um...um...vials!" It all clicked in her head and she fumbled around until her hooves found the vials she'd been given. "Got it!"

 

She stuffed the wet sand into the vial, which contained a small amount of water and continued to do so until every single one was filled. She urged Solar to do the same. She fumbled with the vials, cursing under her breath, but her look of annoyance changed to one of bemusement as the solution began to whir and she noticed she had accidentally activated a button on the side.

"Spark, Lightning, sir! Lieutenant, Head of Cyber-security at Icarus base, sir! At your orders, sir!" Lightning responds while saluting.

 

 Royal Guard? Lightning thinks. Damn, the dialing was even more important than I expected! Guess I should explain why I'm giving orders.

 

"Scarlett told me to tell everyone what to look for, and I was just going to go over to those two mares. One of them left her radio on and, apparently, they found wet sand, which could potentially be the sodium calcite we're looking for. Do I have permission to proceed?"

She took a few moments to take deep breaths and refill her lungs before grabbing some vials of sand. "So, what do you think the dork patrol wants with these?" She asked her friend.

 

"Well, knowing the dork patrol, they'll probably be doing dorky things with it. They'll probably find a way to make sand sound even more boring than it already is." Amber groaned. Returning the sand would probably lead to yet another situation where all the scientist ponies gather round sorting everything out, with the two of them off to the side doing bugger all. "I guess we were at least useful for once. Although I doubt we'll be needed once all the science-y stuff is thrown back into the mix. Yay for being background ponies." She muttered a curse under her breath, returning to her task with even less enthusiasm than before.

The security stallion standing a few meters away from Amber, "ha you should consider yourself lucky no one asked me anything Sapphire just gives orders." He looked back out to the distance, still speaking. "Amber you'll do something good just wait and see, at least ponies speak to you." He looked back off to the distance.
