This thread is for discussion based around the anime/manga 'Hunter x Hunter'. You are free to discuss any aspect of the show or manga including spoilers, but please try to keep those within spoiler tags when possible. That being said, let me start with a simple question:

What is your favourite arc from the anime/manga?

I feel like I have to say the Chimera Ant arc is my favourite, because even though I felt like it was starting to drag on a few times, the ending got all my tears.

Every single one.

Besides that, every scene of every arc with Hisoka in. Stupid, sexy clowns.

The Chimera Ant arc has to be one of the best things written. The ability to make me give a shit about an enemy that starts of so malicious is pretty fantastic. Even though I love that arc, my favourite has to be the Heavens Arena arc, which I know is odd. My reasoning is that my favourite two characters are the main focus of that arc, so its kind of a shallow reason :P

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say, and this may be presumptuous, but... is one of those characters Killua?  :please:

How could you guess? I swear I wasn't giving off any clues :P  But yeah, Gon and Killua are my favourite characters.

I am aww-ing 90% of the time when they are on screen. The other 10% is hype for Killua's shadow step and Gon's jajanken.

I know that feeling, I just can't wait till Togashi gets back to work this coming year and finishes the Dark Continent arc so I can see Gon and Kil reunited again.

This is definitely one of the best shonen anime out there right now. They gave it an ending that was in a way satisfying even if the manga hasn't ended yet.  My favorite arc is the Yorknew Arc with my favorite character being Kurapika.

HxH took its place as my favourite show after I finished the 2011 anime, the story is just brilliant. Im really looking forward to the next anime version, though I doubt it'll be a thing any time soon. Im thinking 2 years or so :?

I've seen all of the 1999 one but I'm still waiting on the English Dub of the 2011 one. Any news on it yet?

I would have to say so far the finale of 1999 was my favorite. But I can already tell the 2011 one is going to be way better.

Finally! It looks like the manga is resuming in April after the year or so long hiatus. We're finally on track again!

Any news on it yet?

There's like 140 episodes so it's probably taking a while to finish. I imagine it'll be out before August this year though, thats the hope at least.

Well ,the creator, Yoshiihiro Togashi took the huge Hiatus due to his chest pain and was reportedly very ill according to certain reports floating around. He was also spending time with his wife, Naoko Takeuchi (The creator of Sailor Moon) and his children. I'm going to try to keep up with the manga, but it's now on my very long list of "Manga I need to keep up with."

Favorite arc: Greed Island. The fights with

Razor and then Genthru the Devil Bomber

were superb.

Chimera Ant arc is really dramatic and upped the ante, but it was also a very dark turn. Plus

I didn't like the Adult Gon/Pitou fight. It went entirely against the idea that a weaker Nen user can employ preparation and clever tactics to beat a technically more powerful opponent, and was just a power-up win for Gon. Although I did like Gon training his Nen with Knuckle.

Oh, and the 2011 anime blows the first one out of the water.

Happy minion of The Fabulous One!

To be fair, they explained why he was able to have that kind of power up in the first place. Including the fact that it almost killed him and forced him to lose his nen for some time. I wouldnt call it a generic power up since he's not going to be able to use that power again.

Has anyone here taken one of those "What sort of Nen user are you?" quizzes?

I apparently end up as a specialist but I'm not sure what sort of powers I'd have.

The first episode of the dub aired a few days ago and Im really enjoying it so far. It takes a bit of getting used to but the voice actors are a good fit for the character so far. They showed a promo for the second episode and Hisoka sounds exactly like I wanted him to, really looking forward to the next 147 weeks of this.

I never watched any other seasons except the Chimer Ant season. I liked the beginning of the Chimera Ant episodes but later on it had that anime samurai magic vibe going on and I knew that I wouldn't like it. I saw the battles on YouTube and I didn't like them either. I would've love to seen the Chimera Ants cause more havoc in civilizations or villages like in the movie Them! Now that I would LOVE to see.

I watched this several years ago and was quite impressed by it. The funny thing is that I started watching it not expecting a single thing from it. I expected another boring, cutesy Shonen, which its image from a distance definitely makes it look like one. Instead it had quite a few twists and writing that defied Shonen tropes that I really enjoyed. The Chimera Ant arc, though... The series turned full-on horror (of course, the series was always a little bit twisted, but this really took it to a new level) and I didn't really appreciate that, but even still, I still enjoyed some of the twists it pulled

Spoiler

(like no actual battle happening with the big bad in the end.). Also Gon turning nearly villainous in trying to get revenge was quite interesting. Never have I seen a straight-up cutesy Shonen hero turn around and do that. Sure the trope has existed before, but it's just really freaky in this series. Lol.

I don't read the manga, so I suppose it would be an eternity until we get another anime season due to how notorious the manga series is going for going on hiatus. But if it stays as good as it was, I'll take the hiatuses. Lol.

I love Hunter x Hunter.

I'm just now catching up on the 2011 anime after having watched the 1999 adaptation and the OVAs. It manages to be a breath of fresh air unlike some of the other shonen series that have become very popular over the past two decades. There's a lot less "I wanna be the best and no one's gonna stop me" and a lot more humility, with great writing and characters who all have depth. Traditional shonen tropes are subverted in ways that keep things from ever getting boring or too predictable. Nen is an interesting take on the shonen trope of spiritual energy-based martial arts (such as hamon, ki, chakra, etc.) that's just unique enough to feel fresh.

Inuyasha is still my favorite series from the genre (mostly for sentimental reasons), but Hunter x Hunter is right up there with the best in my opinion. Can't wait to see if the anime ever comes back, but even if it doesn't, Yoshihiro Togashi has created something special.

1 hour ago, You said:

Not sure why I was tagged, but thank you. :)

I never saw the original Hunter x Hunter anime, just the newer one. Many arcs were interesting, but I can't think of a single one that had an ending that I found completely satisfying. The final story arc with the chimera ants and the chairman election was a bit better. However, the anime ended in a way that felt like a big cliff hanger to me, and there were still some unresolved stories that I wanted to see expanded on.

I don't know much about the creator of this anime/manga, other than the fact that he made YuYu Hakusho. I had heard that with this anime, he wanted to do something different than the usual shonen anime stuff. And while I respect his work, this anime just felt like it was still borrowing some tropes from shonen anime, didn't quite know what it wanted to be, and relied on bittersweet ending too much. If I was being generous, I'd say you could probably use Hunter x Hunter as a gateway to anime that's not mainstream. It's not a masterpiece, but not the worst anime I've ever seen, just needed some focus and maybe lighten up on the too-good-for-shonen-anime mentality. (If that's real, I don't know. I just heard that second hand.)

As for YuYu Hakusho, it's been years since I saw that anime, but I still have VERY fond memories of it. I remember many of the story arcs having much more satisfying conclusions. The dark tournament arc may have been slow and a big stagnant, but most of the story arcs felt like they really kept things going with little to no dull moments. Even the finale of the series felt just right. Not to mention YYH exists in that scope of old school anime. You know, with art styles people just don't do anymore. Not to mention, I thought the music from YYH is way more memorable than the music from HxH. You could also argue that people don't make music like that anymore as well.

Maybe I'm just a bit more of a basic anime fan, but if I feel like story arcs don't really have a satisfying or fitting ending, then it's hard for me to recommend the shows to anyone.

I love this anime so much. It's definitely high on my list of all time favorites. One of very few that I can honestly call a masterpiece. The others being Rurouni Kenshin/Samurai X, Trigun, and Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood.
