gaming The reason why FF7 is so good

Its mostly due to psychology. Although nerds will say "ITS OVERRATED DOODS!!!"

Saw some fun spoof commentary on best 10 or something : 3

But basically in real life what can crush someone can be religion or politics. Because it goes psychologically. Just to mention some examples. In this game uses psychology to more or less be about the case with the character's identity.

Or i like this one, mostly because it is more or less as real as it can be.. Tragical real more or less. Fear that the new remake will just ham up melodrama. But i bet people will try it either way.

But it just is. And thats the beauty in general. But its also just fun game. Like i think you can take the story out, and it still will be awesome!!! Thats what i like about it in general. Summoning monsters :D

Curious to what you think?

It's basically what made both the Playstation and the Final Fantasy franchise household names. Did a lot of things different from normal FF games in terms of both gameplay, setting, and story-telling. Aeris's death came as a huge shocker for tons of people. It also had a huge influence in a lot JRPGs since then. And it's OST is fantastic

Yeah, it's aged a lot since its release, and many Final Fantasy games have surpassed it in many regards(hell it's on the lower end of the series compared to other games, imo), but it's still an iconic game that had a strong impact on the industry

It's a masterpiece for sure.  But I think that FFVII is one of those games where you sort of had to be there.  In other words, you kind of had to play it in it's day, or close to it, to fully appreciate it.  Perhaps I've missed my guess, but I think that if someone today, who has never played a Final Fantasy, decided to pick up 7 and play it, they'd probably just find it too clunky and annoying, particularly given the fact that the joysticks have no function on the PS controller, and maneuvering in a 3D world with just the d-pad can be difficult at times.  "Get on the the damn ladder, Cloud.  You f*cking moron.  NO.  The LADDER.  NO.  Dammit.  Not there!  ON.  THERE.  CLIMB.  DAMMIT."  Heh, me playing that game at times.  But seriously, that's actually the way I'm feeling with Baldur's Gate at the moment.  Never played it before.  Just one of those that slipped me by for many years.  But it's such a revered legend, so I finally started it, and, well...it is a masterpiece, for sure, but I'm having trouble getting into it due to the rather clunky UI, which, imo, hasn't aged well.  I'm sure 2 is better, but I don't want to skip 1, you know?

Anyway, I don't want to ramble too far off topic.  Point is, FFVII has aged perhaps more than other FF games, but it's still a masterpiece.  Such a memorable story and characters.  The materia system was so much fun and so customizable as well.  My favorite part was designing a speed run strategy for Emerald Weapon.  I'd like to play the remake, but only if it comes out on Steam.  I ain't gettin no PS4.

Well i didn't play it in the days. I played it when PS2 was out. Like i think Xbox 360 was right around the corner, or i may had it. Basically i played it when i saw the bonus content on Advent Children DVD, which i now consider to be a bad movie (Sorry for fans in general.)

But i was curious, but i did think that the graphics sucked because i was so used to newer graphics. What hooked me into it was the summonings and stuff. It was just so fun seeing them come on the screen and obliterate everything!!! I think it took me 1 year to beat the game.

It's not the worst movie ever, but it's mostly to blame(along with several post FFVII appearances like KH) for giving Cloud his infamous "emo, brooding, whiny bitch that never smiles" reputation that plagued him for many years after the game's release.

If you actually play the damn game you'd know that he's never been like that apart from two short scenes in the 2nd disc(when he's having an existential crisis), and anyone who still uses that argument has probably never played the game and is bandwagoning "unpopular" opinion just to be cool, or just watched Advent Children

Well i bought FF7 game on PS4... I have no clue why they added blood on his cheeks when you go to the meny atleast you can see his avatar having some of it. Adding edge i guess " :P
But yeah... i mean his portrayal could have been worse in the remake. I just kinda wish they portrayed him more down to the earth. In my point of view atleast. He's overall very monotone in general in later adaptions : I

Edit: But personally i like the lego look in FF7 overhead view. It gives the game more of a charm from the battle outlook and whenever you do stuff in general : 3
Meh.. i still like the original better :). But i will try the new one more or less. Also.. I find it interesting that Barret is more chill in the new version than a leader with a high temperament

Edit: Some errors on my post O_o, had to edit it out.

I have a crazy idea. What if they used this model somewhat in the game :). That would be interesting : 3

My brother will surely buy the remake. I'll try it out by myself once he gets all chapters. I just hope it doesn't ruin what made FFVII back in the day.

I'm one of those people who never played FFVII, being told how badly it aged. Not to mention it's story it's pretty much common knowledge among gamers these days

I love FFVII, and there's quite a few reasons for that. I actually only got around to playing it a month or so ago.

I got attached to all party members, even those I really don't use like Barret, Aerith, Cait Sith, and Red XIII. There's an actually threatening villain who I got freaked out by at multiple points, and has a pretty cool backstory (Sephiroth in the first 2/3rds of Crisis Core was pretty funny). Cloud's relateable, iconic, and is really interesting with the whole puppet storyline. It's really funny, namely most scenes with Cid and Yuffie (And crossdressing). The story was so good, it kept me on the edge of my seat most of the time. Only bad part was that golden chocobo, I hate you, go die, but I got a Knights of the Round out of it.

As for Advent Children, it was okay, but I only watched it for the fight scenes. That Sephiroth vs Cloud battle was awesome!

It's also pretty iconic, mostly because it was the first FF to be advertised in the west.

VII was groundbreaking for its time. And it holds up...Pretty well. It's still pretty dumb that the big apocalypse-threatening evil magic is...Some fiery rock spell that your basic Behemoth can cast a thousand times.

I could never get into the story or characters though: The Popeye-esque Lego people are too off-putting and just aren't expressive enough. Could not immerse myself. PC mods help but they made the new shiny HD characters look too out of place. So I'm hoping the remake fixes this flaw.

Never played any of its supplementary material.

Before Crisis never came outside Japan unfortunately. Dirge of Cerberus and Advent Children kind of blow imo. Crisis Core is fantastic though(Genesis notwithstanding), if you haven't played it and have a PSP(or can find one, they're pretty cheap nowadays) it's definitely worth looking into, hopefully it gets an HD release soon

Berit needs a bigger chest D=

Honestly, I don't care for FF7. I get why people do, but it's among my least favorite of the Final Fantasy series, along with Hallway Simulator. That doesn't mean I don't understand why people do like it, and I certainly understand the draw. My biggest problems with it were:

  • Cloud is a flat character. He's supposed to be broody and deep, but mostly I saw him as being about as interesting as a sparkly vampire.
  • It's not fantasy. It's more in the realm of a post-apocalyptic super soft sci-fi.
  • The entire game is extremely heavy. By heavy I mean serious. Even though there were serious themes in other FF games, they added some amount of levity which this game was lacking in.
  • Because it was many people's first FF it will always be the best to them because of nostalgia
  • Edit: OH GOD THE CONTROLS

I did love the date scene, though.

That said, I did connect with the story. Also, at its core it does have some great Final Fantasy elements, particularly the music. I don't hate the game, no matter what it seems like from above list, but 7 will never take the place of my personal favorite Final Fantasy games.

A lot of people have said that FF7 has not aged too well, which in some regards, it definitely has not aged well. The graphics of the character models are horrendously outdated and movement is stiff and clunky, but honestly, I think the game holds up incredibly well in the gameplay area. The materia system is amazing to me and overall it's combat was simple but still had depth and strategy to it, hence why I am not overly fond of the how the remake is being handled. I would have far preferred the combat to stay intact.

Graphics looks better on PS1 though than most games. What i mean is they are noticable. Most games having the so called "CINEMATIC effect" leaves absolutely no impression. I mean Tomb Raider 1 has really horrible graphics. But ATLEAST it leaves an impression in terms of game experience to say the least, its not unfun to play it. While you have the new so called vulnerable Lara Croft or cinematic events being the main show,... it just doesnt care about the game itself. How to make a game shine.

You could say the 90s when people made games and not movies. to be brief : 3

While I love FF7 and it's definitely my favorite Final Fantasy and I played it a few times, I do have to say: it has not aged well visual wise. Gameplay wise it's still solid and story wise it's spectacular, but visual wise it did not age that well at all. Let's be real here: at the time of FF7's release it was not really that great looking back then either. Sure the battle scenes looked pretty decent, but a lot of the game looked bad. When you consider Resident Evil which came out a year before it had far more stunning visuals at the time, you realize Square Enix kind of didn't want to push the PS1 too far.

Then when you look at FF9 which has almost every visual improvement over FF7  and is one of the best looking games on the PS1 you realize that FF7 didn't age so great. I have a lot of people always telling me that the FF7 remake is going to "ruin" FF7 to new gamers, but let's be honest here: not every old game aged well enough to have the same feeling it did when it came out. Some games age well and others do not. FF7 I think will benefit from this remake because it'll keep a story that is wonderful remembered.

I still love the game and I will probably play the original again before the remake comes out, but I can definitely understand how today's youth won't give the original a chance. Not every game from that era is Ocarina of Time.

If I had to pick a favorite Final Fantasy, well it would be Final Fantasy 6.  But if I had to pick a second favorite it would be either Final Fantasy 7 or Final Fantasy Tactics depending on how I was feeling at the time.  Sure early 3D graphics haven't aged very well, a Cloud can be kind of a flat character at times, but overall FF7 is a solid an enjoyable experience.  You got an interesting story, and interesting setting, a fun adventure, one of the better character customization systems of the series (materia) and an engaging if simplistic combat engine (but there all kind of simplistic save Tactics and its spinoffs).  I enjoyed this game and its cool fantasy cyberpunk setting up until the very end, where I proceeded to lose the save game files :(.  I think the game is largely deserving of its reputation.  A well made old game is still a good game.

Unfortunately, the PS1 hardware could barely run FF9 and some of the load times, especially for combat, were downright atrocious.   Also, whoever designed the FF9 playable character art must have been suffering from a brain aneurysm at the time, because those designs are downright ugly.  The settings and backdrops are downright gorgeous though, I will give FF9 that.  Its just a shame the graphics weren't attached to a better game.

Personally I think FF7 is more deserving of its praise than Ocarina of Time, which I actually found kind of dull.  I never felt Zelda made a good transition to 3D, and there are better 3D incarnations in any event (Windwaker, Twilight Princes, Majora's Mask if you have access to an emulator or something that gives you saved states).
