I personally define closet bronies as people who deliberately try to avoid leaving cues that they express interest in mlp, so according to that I would say you are more of a casual brony than a closet one.

 

I get that people get annoyed when they have things shoved in their face or when certain aspects of a fandom disturbs them, but this whole anti-"insert fandom name" concept is questionable to begin with, what does someone else's interest in a cartoon/videogame/movie/etc has anything to do with you?

Just out of curiosity, if you dislike the fandom, why do you have more than 600 posts here? And also, not everyone is like how you described above, its really hard to simply generalize a group of people as diverse as the brony fandom. All fandoms have their annoying, disturbing or quirky sides, most of the time these weird sides of a fandom is what people think of everyone associated is as a whole. I do agree that not liking the fandom is a legit answer being an anti brony, just like for any other fandom, its pretty normal actually.

I would very much disagree. I practically live and breath mlp in my free time. But in public I never tell people I'm a brony.

The main reason I'm on this forum is that I like to discuss the show from time to time. There's some other reasons as well, but those aren't important.

No, I do not agree with you. Sure, quite a few of the brony fandom do act the way you described, but not really anymore. The only time people do act like that (in the semi uncommon situations they do) is if you go to the cons and or interact with them face to face. On the internet, people for the most part have grown up and moved on, no one really acts like that on the internet when it comes to the fandom, but if they do, 80% of the time one of two things are true:

1. They were provoked into acting that way

2. They are trolls

The other 20% are the annoying hyperactive 9-12 year olds that you probably are talking about.

 

So do I think its ok to generalize the fandom for its hyperactive annoying side? As I mentioned before, that depends on where you are in the world/internet. IMO its ok to generalize the fandom from what you experience. I am not ok with people generalizing the fandom from what they hear or read.......does that make sense?

I think the OP was specifically referring to people not liking the show itself and not necessarily the fandom that fallows it, but I could be wrong on this. 

 

I do think the show and the fandom can, and sometimes should, be kept separate.

 

I generally agree that there are justifiable reasons for not liking Bronies. After all, you can find out all there is to know about Bronies without ever having watched a single episode of MLP. It is fair enough to say you don't like them. 

 

However, to the point I think OP was getting at. To dismiss the show itself out of hand, without ever having seen it is silly and closed minded. You can't judge a book without looking past the cover.

I never faced any anti bronies real life.. I revealed to the whole school about me being a mlp fan. My bff and my sis is embarrassed for being one but I was extremely proud of it and became quite popular.. my friends may not love mlp but they respected it and everytime they want to tease mlp they make sure it's not too far and I'm not around or my lecture will start..

 

I've met anti bronies online but, most of them the same reason: " ponies all over Internet"

A friend of mine doesn't like the show because of the art style, though I wouldn't call him an anti-brony. As for this fandom...I'm really on the fence about that. On these forums, I can discuss the show and things surrounding it with relative maturity, but I won't deny I've seen many, many bronies who make me cringe so hard I fear my face may be stuck in that expression forever. Aside from that there are far too many people who equate being a brony with being some sort of morally superior person who defies gender stereotypes....by saying ponies are manly as fuck. If these people seriously don't see the inherent contradiction in such statements I have very little hope for them.

 

That said, I feel this way about essentially every fandom I've ever been involved in, so it's not something I hold against this one specifically. The reason, I think, many people do is that this fandom is rather high-profile to the point more or less mainstream documentaries are made about it, every single one of which features several cringy moments which very much perpetuate existing stereotypes rather than dispelling them. Aside from that there is an obvious (though in many cases inaccurate) connection to be made with furries, who have been labeled as complete freaks by mainstream society for far longer than bronies have even existed, if the documentaries on that are anything to go by, which doesn't help this fandom's image either.

 

In short, people looking for easy targets have more than enough fodder, and certain people within the fandom will always feel the need to responded with 'witty' remarks and memes which really only makes things worse. Just let people hate, ignore it, and enjoy the magical talking ponies.
