I find it pretty funny that everyone's loving hard on Sunburst, comparing him as the anti-EqG Twaifu stealer, and no one questions the alarm bells that this guy is giving off. Ok, before you all grab your torches and pithforks, just hear me out.

 

A LOT of this guys past is a complete mystery. Ure, we know of him being SG's first friend, going off go magic school, being unable to live up to expectation, and......then he's an adult and living in the Crystal Empire.

 

Why is he in the Empire? What made him leave Canterlot? Surely, if it was just to learn more magic, the library in Canterlot was more than sufficient, since it sustained Moondancer's unquenchable thirst for learning for the sole sake of learning, Why couldn't he have stayed in Canterlot-a town full of unicorns- to put his knowledge to good use? The crystal ponies don't need the magic of a wizard for anhthing, when the Crystal heart has its own magic, to supply what they need. Why was he ADOPTING AN ILLUSION that he was even a wizard? Why did he seem so jittery and nervous when somepony first confronted him in the at his home?

 

There's so much unexplained with Sunburst. But something Cadance said also seems suspicious. When SG told her about Sunburt, Cadance says that she's never heard the name before. Cadance! The pony who canonically goes out of her way to memorize every pony in the Crystal Empire. (Canon, because G.M. Berrow wrote "Cadance and the Crystal Heart Spell", "The one Where Pinkie Pie Knows" (an episode leading up to "The Crystalling", and Twi's dialogue in "The Spectacle" has also made Berrow's book, Pinkie's Rocking Party Palooza" canon). Cadance SHOULD recognize him, if he was a true citizen, so why did Sunburst slip under her radar...? Just like the Changelings can.....

 

Odd, too, that he has so much knowledge on the Crystal Heart....more than that of the very ruler of the empire, herself, AND Twilight, the princess of books. Odder still, that a Changeling was seen flying toward the Empire, in the ending shot of the episode.....

 

Or is it? It'd all make sense if Starburst was an agent for Chrysalis, and now has a connection with Flurry Heart, and use his newfound position to help her kidnap the baby and switch it with changeling minion, in the season finale!

He might've wanted to leave to the Crystal empire because that's where he had access to an expansive library without the risk of having to run into any unicorns that he went to magic school with.. It would probably be embarrassing for him, being a school drop-out and all.. So the Crystal Empire was the next best choice.. And he just wanted to learn about magic, he seemed to have already given up trying to actually perform spells.. But his passion for learning magic still drives him to discover more..

 

As for the "Adopting an illusion of being a wizard", he did not say he was any sort of wizard until Starlight brought it up.. He only begun using it as an excuse there and then..

He didn't want to be seen as a disappointment to anypony, especially one of his oldest friends.. Which is why he lied to her..

There are multiple things that could possibly deny this fact.. He could have moved there AFTER those events happened.. Also Cadence would likely memorize every pony who she's actually met, and being that Sunburst was kind of a hermit in his house and not really going out in public, it's not wonder the Princess hadn't seen or heard of him before.. As for the changeling thing.. This can be disproven by the fact that he can use actual unicorn magic, as the only magic changelings have been shown to use involving their horn is a energy-based charge attack and that's pretty much it.. As we've seen Sunburst use levitation, this is 1 major point of evidence that Sunburst is NOT a changeling..

Having such an expansive library to look through and being quite the book worm, he was bound to have stumbled across a lot of information on the Crystal Heart.. Also he is a logical thinker, he sees the Crystal Heart not just as "The Crystal Heart" but also as an ancient relic, which is most certainly is.. And as a relic, any spells that could involve relics would also likely work for the Crystal Heart too..

 

 

 

 

I saw that black speck too, I'm not entirely sure what that is exactly.. But it being there doesn't necessarily link it to Sunburst at all..

If anything it could be the return of Sombra, Chrysalis, a stray black cloud knocked towards the empire.. Or for all we know it could've been an animation error..

I feel that Sunburst was only in the Crystal Empire just for plot convenience. If he was there during the time when the Crystal Empire returned and Sombra was attempting to take control, he'll probably run away and returned after it was liberated by Spike. That explains why Cadence didn't knew he exists.

 

As a changeling? I not even sure if a changeling can even replicate a unicorn's magical ability, and outstanding knowledge as Sunburst exhibits.
