PacificGreen 1,163 August 5, 2016 #28 Share August 5, 2016 I like the variety of expressions. They give characters more ways of expressing themselves, and they make the show's animation just the right amount of cartoony. 1 "Why should the Bill of Rights be in the official time capsule, but this painting of my dog is in time capsule 7?" -Parks and Recreation, Time Capsule -----Visit my deviantART HERE. Crypty Scribbles 5,451 August 5, 2016 #29 Share August 5, 2016 (edited) So many different emotional face expressions are making character live and interesting for real. And the most awesome that they do not overuse it. Edited August 5, 2016 by Crypty
Megas 27,828 August 5, 2016 #30 Share August 5, 2016 Honestly, the goofy faces are part of the appeal for me On 2016-08-05 at 6:35 AM, Crypty said: So many different emotional face expressions are making character live and interesting for real. Thrond 3,263 August 5, 2016 #33 Share August 5, 2016 I dunno, if they're keeping with the show's aesthetic like in "The Saddle Row Review," then they're fine, but sometimes the show goes too far with it. I don't weird goofy faces to be part of the show's visual appeal, especially if they're trying too hard to be weird, like in "Tanks for the Memories." At that point, they're just obnoxious. There's not too many, but I'd prefer if the show didn't go into SpongeBob-ish weird face territory.
ihhh 30 September 19, 2016 #34 Share September 19, 2016 Many of them are badly drawn, but I don't blame exaggeration and/or distortion for that. I blame it on some of the storyboard artists not understanding construction, and if her deviant art gallery is anything to go by, even Sibsy can be guilty of this. Cirrus. 1,090 September 22, 2016 #35 Share September 22, 2016 (edited) I think it is a bit goofy sometimes, but I think it's a good thing because it shows that the animators are having fun. Engaged animators are a good thing. If you want to see what having unengaged animators results in, go watch some mlp gen 3.5. Edited September 22, 2016 by Cirrus. KatonRyu 1,033 September 30, 2016 #36 Share September 30, 2016 I like that they keep trying new things with them. I think that even for them, it's a learning process. Just throw it in there and see how it works in the episode itself. Sure, they watch them before they air, but I'd imagine they would pay more attention to the overall product at that stage. If they get feedback on it, they'll know if it worked. Some bronies are very vocal, so I have no doubt they'll receive mountains of reactions each episode, and I'd wager if enough of them addressed a certain expression they'd take note of it in some way. And I appreciate the effort being put in. But I feel like the amount of over exaggerated facial expression takes away from their meaning. Don't get me wrong, over exaggerated expressions are a great way to convey strong emotions in a cartoon, but the more you use them the less intense the emotions feel. Anyone agree or disagree? Indeed! When they do this so often, like they have been, then they lose their charm. I've noticed this, along with not-so-subtle pandering in this season, and I don't like it. I will put it this way, the knife will get dull if used too often. But this show is not a knife, so you cannot simply sharpen it after it gets dull. However, what they can do is improve from their mistakes. I don't know for sure though, because the other users in this thread have made some excellent points that go against what my opinion. I know that it's fallacious to think that these exaggerated expressions will become continual, but it is a possibility. Edited September 30, 2016 by Heavenly Sun Love and tolerate! Heartprint 33 September 30, 2016 #39 Share September 30, 2016 I love the exaggerated expressions...it feels like the characters are becoming less reserved and more genuine with their reactions. Diamond Tiara's facials in Crusaders of the Lost Mark felt totally natural to me; we were already expecting her nasty attitude, but then suddenly we were hit with...ugly Diamond Tiara?! OMG is her face really doing that? It was not only comical, but immediately I could sense her gaurd was already dropping. Although, my favorite still has to be Rainbow's "DO I LOOK ANGRY?!" face (Tanks for the Memories)...Dash is an extrovert, so subduing or downplaying her emotions is a challenge for her, but this was an epic fail. Her expression managed to be simultaneously hilarious and terrifying, while still feeling like genuine Dashie. I feel that when the creators of FIM come up with new and creative ways for the characters to express their personalities, it keeps the show interesting by making you feel like there's still little pieces you haven't seen yet...Rainbow's gushy, giddy smile when Daring Do confirmed thier friendship was unexpected and adorable. I hope they keep animating the ponies with the freedom to show us a lesser-seen of their personalies.
Vlazamal 338 September 30, 2016 #40 Share September 30, 2016 I believe in the show's current amount of facial expressions is great. In the goldilocks; enough to be funny and awesome, but not too much.
honk friend 1,978 September 30, 2016 #41 Share September 30, 2016 that's been a huge complaint of mine lately, it feels like they toss funny faces in every other episode because they've noticed the trend of bronies eating that shit up
Megas 27,828 September 30, 2016 #42 Share September 30, 2016 The problem I feel is that a lot of them feel unnecessary, Things like Fluttershy going off on RD and AJ in Buckball Season feels too much and sorta kills that mood for that moment, and Twilight's face after telling Starlight mind control is bad feels unnecessary too In contrast, Dash flipping out when she finds out Starlight doesn't know who the Wonderbolts are feels both appropriate for the situation and in character for her
