Chaton 3,766 April 16, 2016 Share April 16, 2016 Right, this has been bugging me for ages. Pony facial hair. How the heck does it work?! Humans only have the ability to grow facial hair it because through evolution we've lost the ability to grow hair in most places, barring a few such as the face and legs. But ponies, just how? They have coats, so how does it work? And not just that, the facial hair always appears to be a different color to their actual coat. So, does anyone have any wacky theories, or am I just thinking too much into a kids show? 1 Art by DoeKitty
Wind Chaser 4,768 April 16, 2016 Share April 16, 2016 (edited) I think it's the latter. It's common for cartoons to give animals human physical characteristics to complement or accentuate their possession of human mental characteristics, even if they don't appear in real life. It's why they're cartoons to begin with. It's fun to theorize in-universe, but it's good to know the practical reason for it as well. I'll just say they're capable of growing mane/tail hair on their face and leave it there. Edited April 16, 2016 by Wind Chaser
Denim&Venöm 19,385 April 16, 2016 Share April 16, 2016 Pretty sure their biology differs from our horses, and not just in terms of facial hair.

snowflame 189 April 16, 2016 Share April 16, 2016 Why can't facial hair work the same way as it does in manes and tails even if real world ponies do not have those?
Chaton 3,766 April 16, 2016 Author Share April 16, 2016 Why can't facial hair work the same way as it does in manes and tails even if real world ponies do not have those? That is the most sensible answer here. Well done! Art by DoeKitty

ponylaces 1,870 April 17, 2016 Share April 17, 2016 The facial hair is the color of their manes, not their coats, so you can see what I'm trying to say here. It probably works just like human facial hair does, but with their manes. Ponies are weird like that. 1 hello
Moon Sugar 532 April 17, 2016 Share April 17, 2016 As seen from above horses can grow 'facial hair' as well mythical unicorns usually have a pretty nifty beard too. 1 ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ☆★☆ It's you I love ☆★☆
Kyoshi Frost Wolf 41,803 April 17, 2016 Share April 17, 2016 Sunburst is rocking that goatee pretty awesomely I must say. The images that DanT posted pretty much show that horse facial hair is sorta possible, so in a fantastical world like Equestria, the possibilities become far larger. Kinda surprised we haven't seen even more varied facial hair.
Gestum 2,493 April 17, 2016 Share April 17, 2016 It's obvious that they simply cut of a piece of their mane and glue it onto their faces.

They even mentioned in an episode that the ponies are herbivores... but yeah, they are humans in adorable cartoon bodies. Very adorable cartoon ponies... sweetolebob18 728 April 20, 2016 Share April 20, 2016 I've always thought that ponies were like people. That is, some males can grow a beard better than others. +the show doesn't go into it but IMO some ponies shave. If you recall Feeling Pinkie Keen (S1 E15), the scene where Derpy drops a piano on Twilight, the Pegasus in charge of the moving van looks like he's got 5 o'clock shadow. (side note Groucho Marx said electric razors were great because Americans were always in a hurry & shaving with one you can have 5 o'clock shadow by noon)
