Should I Leave Derpibooru?

Prior to joining this site, the only pony-related site I was active on was Derpibooru. Lately, I've begun feeling as though I prefer MLP Forums to Derpi. In general, MLP Forums seems to be a better moderated, more diverse site than Derpi. A while back I posted a "Seasonal Rot" thread: when I mentioned I was from Derpi, I got people telling me things "yeah, Derpi's a pretty negative site," "Derpi's the pony equivalent of the Youtube comments section" and "Derpi's essentially an adjunct of /mlp/."

 

It was around that time that I began to really and truly notice just how negative Derpi was. I mean, I'd always heard it was a negative site, but I never realized just how negative it was until I started coming here on a more regular basis. Earlier today, I made a post that briefly mentioned how I now prefer MLPForums to Derpibooru. To protect the identities of those in question, I'll be referring to the people who replied to my post as "Derpi Member #X."

 

Me: I prefer MLPForums to Derpibooru. It's better moderated, there's less Faustalgia and the roleplay section is better. Nevertheless, I plan on sticking around here because I know I've got friends on this site.

 

Derpi Member #1: Well, at least the mods here wont ban you for liking something they don't like, unlike other websites.

 

Derpi Member #2: Didn’t GFK39 get perma-banned from MLPForums pretty much because he said that he didn’t see death as fitting to the show, and the "reason" given was "abusive speech" even though he was perfectly polite about it? He’s shown the screenshot numerous times…

I don’t know about you, but bullshit moderation like that makes me want to stay away from there.

 

Derpi Member #3: After a quick glance, I suspect MLPForums has a much younger audience since it’s purely a forum as opposed to also hosting images of various… ahem… themes. Because of that cynicism/realism is much less appreciated, and from the looks of it mods also make that obvious. Moderators have a big impact on how a website works, if they’re biased, then you’re going to see a lot more circlejerking since other opinions just… vanish. Is it a bad thing? Not really, cause if it’s not there, it’ll be somewhere else. Always a market for someplace everyone agrees with how amazing something is. Sure could use less "Hater" and "Butthurt" claims being thrown around, though.

 

I pointed out that I've never seen anyone get banned for having a dissenting opinion, as well as the fact I've seen plenty of disagreements on this site. I posted a link to a thread here on MLPForums to prove my point, but everyone there was like "It's only one thread" and "that thread's clearly an exception."

 

Now I'm seriously thinking about leaving Derpi. The quality of discussion there doesn't seem to be as good as it is here, the roleplaying section isn't as good and the moderators are too hands-off for my liking. I'm still on the fence, though. Is there any truth to the claims being made here?

 well if you ask me I would say you should only leave it if you feel like doing it ^-^ I mean you might still have friends there right? I do admit MLP forums isnt perfect for now but most ponies are giving their best to make it so. I myself try to add every single active member of the forums and provide them help and support in all stuff I can help them with ^-^ life advice pc problems and all other problems ... I wanna try to help

During the last months there, i just felt very uncomfortable with whole community there and i feel like the mods there don't really do a very good job. So, my experience with the site was never a good one, eventhough i still watch the images.

 

So from my point of view, i would say leave it.

1. Keep in mind you're comparing this place to Derpibooru, of which you gave a pretty nice description. That doesn't place the bar very high now, does it?
2. All the people who'd give you a very detailed account about what goes on here either left or are banned. You're just not going to get the complete picture. In fact, if you send me a PM, I could get you in contact with former staff members from this site and give you a detailed account as they've seen it from the inside.

I'm with you on the point of Derpi having a terrible community. I only really go there because it's a convenient hub for pony art and pretty much nothing else.

 

Since you're probably joining here, let me start you off on a cautious note. This place does have its faults as you'll probably discover yourself along the way (because no place is perfect, let's not get ahead of ourselves here) and yes, for sure, the ecosystem of attitudes here is different from Derpi. Whether or not you as your authentic self can find your place here is something that remains to be seen. If so, great.

Make whatever choice makes you happy. We can always tell you how we feel about it, but what matters the most is that you make a choice that makes you happy, so that you can fully enjoy ponies with others .

I found the community growing extremly pessimistic and hostile towards other peoples opinions. I mean, it's okay to have healthy debate, but not to the point where it feels like that you attack me. And like i said, the mods did a poor job about certain people there.

I've noticed that, too. People on that site seem to confuse being pessimistic for being intelligent.

That's a very bad trend that goes around fandoms. You need really to keep an open mind when it comes to the series. Sure, even i am guilty of being pessimistic, but i have often a very good reason. But seriously, if you are pessismistic all the time, what are you doing here in the first place?

I was surprised myself about it having forums. I didn't find out till much later.

so do I, I´ve found out derpibooru has a community like.... 2 weeks ago . No use in belonging in a community that negative, better leave it to whatever you look for

Yeah Derpiboo.ru is pretty negative but negative is something I'm used to, being a negative person and all. I go on the site at least once a day for no other reason except interest. However, if I were the opposite of who I am, I probably would have left already. But it's really up to you in the end. This is just my opinion/experience.

I don't really think those sites can really be compared on the same level considering you are allowed to post porn on Derpibou.

 

Also I read the first 2 responses you got to your comment. The first one is an over-exaggeration with no evidence behind it, and the second didn't actually happen. That particular user never got banned, he just left.

Depends on what you are looking for. I hestitate to call one Pony site 'worse' than another. Each of the main gathering places has something to offer as the tone is different.

It's a imageboard site. I didn't think people actually used the forums on there regularly. I only go on there to collect pics and add the random comment or two. Plus, where else am I gonna get my mare shippings?

 

If anything, just leave the forums.

Derpibooru is pretty unfiltered, and its home to a much more aggressive segment of the Brony Community. I rarely bother with the forum part of their site, but I've seen more than enough out of the comments on pictures to know I wouldn't really enjoy myself there at all. I suspect its where a lot of the people who get banned from here tend to gravitate too.

 

I've seen flame wars on there that just would not happen on this site, or at least not for long before the mods step in, and I've rarely seen an action taken by a mod (even towards me) that I would deem as unfair. 

 

Personally I haven't had any really friendly interactions with anyone on that site. Either comments are entirely ignored or used to spark a flame war. Its really a far too unpleasant site, and this is from someone whom frequents youtube comment sections.

I will say this: this site is far from perfect, but I have been on a lot of different pony sites and frankly; this one is the least drama ridden and the staff listen to the users more than a majority of other sites. Are they perfect? No. However they are worlds better than say... The likes of BronySquare.

 

People who are banned generally aren't reliable people to get an accurate account of a site. I know plenty of people banned from this site that from my direct experience with those people: fully deserved said bans. I have seen people be banned for being blatant assholes regularly and then turn around and complain that the staff are corrupt.

 

The best people to get an opinion from are people who are neutral.

 

You have to keep in mind with Derpibooru: it's a totally different community with a whole different focus. It harbors a lot of NSFW content and 18+ content. Unfortunately when you bring in NSFW and 18+ the lines get blurred a bit. What is considered "offensive" then gets debated further and more exceptions have to be made because any time someone does something "offensive" someone will point out how it's hypocritical to hold them accountable when other people are posting various types of porn. It quickly becomes a PR nightmare to try and police behavior on said sites.

 

Honestly NSFW/18+ sites only really work well when there are strict guidelines and they are followed to a T with no exceptions.

I actually just joined Derpibooru today because of this discussion. I've been looking at it for a while now, and I don't really see what's so bad about the site.

 

Maybe I'm just a moron at navigating, but the filters work pretty well for me. Hardly anything even remotely suggestive popped up while I was scrolling.

You have to disable filters. My point wasn't that you stumble across it on accident or anything, just that when you let people post porn it's kind of hard to justify anything as "offensive".

So GFK39 wasn't banned, he just left and said he was banned? Mind if I get proof of that?
