What would have made the ending to Of Mice and Men more depressing than it already was?

Not much really, unless the author went overboard and just offed every single character in rapid succession.

of mice and men's strength is that it comes at the there are multiple themes and emotions that are nailed.  You could make the story more depressing, but it might feel less believable.  Or could be tainted with malice.  Or selfishness.  Or the tension in the main character's decision could have been removed.  

 

Want to make it more depressing? add some bunnies and kill them too. that certainly wouldn't make the book better.

How about the bullet that is used to kill Lenny then ricochets off a rock and just happens to hit a newborn baby in the head.  Of course, that would be ridiculous.

Honestly, if they had continued on with Carl and his story, living without Lenny and the knowledge of what he had to do.

I can't imagine he would move on to an easier life or the American Dream, and it makes me feel sad just thinking of him in some bar alone, drowning his sorrows and having imaginary conversations with his best friend.
