Azureth 687 September 14, 2016 Share September 14, 2016 (edited) Been recently catching up to the more recent episodes and just watched NB and...I don't know if I need to watch it again but what is the writers deal/thinking with making the Wonderbolts, what is supposed to be a prestigious well-disciplined organization (not sure if that's the right word) into a bunch of immature, mean jackasses?? And THIS is what someone like RD WANTS to be a part of??? Is it just me or are what are supposed to be adults act more like what you'd expect from middle schoolers? This is by no means the only episode where the great Wonderbolts have acted this way either. I mean I don't expect them to be perfect and perhaps one episode showing they aren't would be fine, but as I said it seems for whatever reasons for the last few seasons the writers have this "let's make the wonderbolts the most immature jackasses they can be!" thinking. To me, RD deserves a LOT better than as Rarity would say, these ruffians! At least that is my take away. Thoughts? Megas 27,765 September 14, 2016 Share September 14, 2016 I feel like the writers often want to make the WB flawed idols, or as TV Tropes would say, "Idols with Warts"(I think that's what it's called), I don't think they've ever intended on making them look so awful. Yet only the comics have actually been able to get this right(FF#12), and most of the show's attempts have either made them incredibly incompetent, used the "it's a ___ thing" excuse, or just make their flaws to the point where they're just completely deplorable. It's amazing that they continue to do this and yet not one of the writers have actually realized and say "hey don't you think this episode makes them look a bit like assholes?" If they do intend on keeping RD in the Wonderbolts, I'm hoping for a point where they just write out the original team and start fresh, because they're almost beyond saving at this point
Luminance 2,186 September 14, 2016 Share September 14, 2016 The Wonderbolts to me, feel like self-entitled pricks berating anypony who don't live up to their standards. It's their little club of elitists and Rainbow Dash was caught in their hellfire. Not realized what Rainbow Dash did for them, to save Equestria and they get to sit back as some "guards" sure shows how they operate.
LyricaDreamy 43 September 14, 2016 Share September 14, 2016 Just jackass , not immature . RD will still be in the Wonderbolts regardless their treatment because all she was looking forward is to become a skilled flyer , not bullies.
Azureth 687 September 14, 2016 Author Share September 14, 2016 (edited) Yeah you bring up great points. It just often feels like they are going out of their way to make them look bad for some bizarre reason. And another thing that gets me is neither RD nor any of her friends even really question it. Heck, in this episode to me at least they really dumbed down RD and turned her into a complete klutz. Having RD keep on falling into things, keep making accidents, seriously? And the whole "rainbow crash" thing became older than the dinosaurs, and their "explanation" for it at the end "oh you just don't understand, we all have nick names based off dumb things we have done" made me want to: http://i.stack.imgur.com/jiFfM.jpg The Wonderbolts to me, feel like self-entitled pricks berating anypony who don't live up to their standards. I don't think they realize how unlikable they made them Again, they've screwed them up soooo badly that, if they intend on keeping Dash in the Wonderbolts(They already took several shits on her character arc, but I really doubt they'll have her quit, they should've already done it at WBA. Doing it now would be the ultimate "fuck you"). I'd rather they just do a clean sweep and start fresh
Courageous Thunder Dash 7,824 September 14, 2016 Share September 14, 2016 I felt so bad for Dash in this episode. The Wonderbolts are the one thing that motivates Dash. Instead, they act like stupid bullies thinking they're all that. I don't know why the writers keep doing that to them. It's just wrong because we all wanna see Rainbow Dash live her dream. Rainbow was hurt physically and mentally in that episode, and the Wonderbolts are to blame for it. I hope Dash gives them a hard one next time... Miss 6,234 September 14, 2016 Share September 14, 2016 I thought the episode was pretty great. Some people see it as being jackasses. I don't. I mean, honestly if we look at it from one perspective the Wonderbolts are military so little names should not bother you otherwise you shouldn't be there, but I don't like to look t it that way. I like to think of them like joining a sports team. I was in a sports team and people called me things, we called each other things. It wasn't meant to discourage it was just meant for fun. If you have a problem with a name then you should talk about it. And that's what this episode was. Rainbow Dash didn't feel comfortable telling the bolts that the name was actually offensive to her, but at the end when she finally does (not exactly the whole story but still) they tell her what they meant by it (meant for those who don't understand why the nicknames are, just for fun) and that was comfortable with her. Maybe in the future we will get an episode that 100% if you have a problem with something bring it up and then it will be solved (not all the time obviously it isn't real life) but I kinda felt like that was half of "The Cart Before the Ponies" But I do agree the writers do make the Wonderbolts, in other episodes, act strange, but I'm sure there is some justification to it somewhere. Other than that I thought the episode was cute, hilarious, and the ending was awesome. Think about it, they called her Rainbow crash, but where is she? In the WONDERBOLTS! They best aerial group ever! That means what? She is an incredible flyer and they all told her that. Rainbow took it the wrong way. I see it as the episodes are half to teach a lesson not to show how something should be done. So in other words I love the ending!!! "Duh! Because I'm a Wonderbolt!"

Yes, I do think the worse they'd actually been was in Rainbow Falls. as they actually sought to replace Soaring. This episode however, many might find the whole "it's a wonderbolts tradition" BS, but they seem to ignore that: 1-Dashie failed to explain why that nickname was offensive. 2-It's pure coincidence it was the same name she was bullied with 3-They teased her only the first time. Later times they used it more as a nickname with no ill intent 4-They'd explained Dashie it's a Wonderbolts tradition BEFORE the end of the episode 5-They'd even told Dashie their own nicknames (I just hope Spitfire's is something... naughty . What? She's a hot mare ) I don't see the episode that awful because of these reasons Sig by Discords

That is the way I see it though! I have to disagree. Fame should never ever excuse simply deplorable behavior. For one, despite adoration from Rainbow Dash, the Wonderbolts have done little to prove that they have earned anything. Being talented doesn't give you a free pass to stomp on everyone as you see fit. Take Justin Bieber for example. I think he is an amazing singer. But I can't stand him, because he acts like a spoiled child. The argument could be made that it's only because of the bad company he kept, but I'll stop there. It's not really fair to say that the Wonderbolts are like that, exactly. You could say that what they were doing was good-natured jest (or hazing, which frankly, I don't don't particularly like, either). My point is, just no. Nothing justifies that behavior. And it certainly should NEVER be endorsed or encouraged. Also, and someone please tell me if I'm mistaken: is Gordon Ramsey not acting? He is a TV cooking show star, is he not? 2 Check out my voice-acting demo reels on Casting Call Club, if you'd like.

Professional Horse 94 September 14, 2016 Share September 14, 2016 Everything would make perfect sense if Dash eventually decides to quit the WB and it turned out that the show had been building up to that. I mean, her idols have turned out to be jerks, and usually when this storytelling trope is used the main character rethinks their life, stops idolizing assholes and moves on. That's why I've expected an episode where Dash has to deal with abandoning her dream. That could be a very good emotional episode. But so far Dash doesn't seem to really care that much. She's completely fine with the WB being jerks and still thinks that it's her destiny to be a WB. We're going to get one more WB episode this season and there's no sign of Dash wanting to quit. Also, am I the only one who thinks that Dash is far too lazy, selfish and arrogant to be a WB? Also, and someone please tell me if I'm mistaken: is Gordon Ramsey not acting? He is a TV cooking show star, is he not? He's acting. I watched a documentary years ago where he seemed like a pretty nice guy IRL. It's the same thing with Kevin from Shark Tank/Dragon's Den. All great points. I always wanted to like the 'bolts, but they haven't been portrayed well at all. If nothing else, they could have at least made Rainbow's idols professional, but they're not at all. When you actually look at their appearances back to back like this (especially Rainbow Falls and Newbie Dash), you realize that it's not a slip-up; it's a trend. It's really sad. bluseymoe 258 September 14, 2016 Share September 14, 2016 The writers didn't give Rainbow Dash or most of the other mane 6 the kind of attention they needed in terms of their growth. That's why episodes like this and many others were so poorly thought out. They're more preoccupied with adding new characters and making us care about Starlight (a lost cause for me) this season. The episodes featuring new characters turned out to be the more well-recieved ones, and while I like a lot of the new additions and world building we're getting, it shouldn't come at the expense of the characters who still ultimately matter most.

Otherwise Dash is ether really great or possibly the worst character in the show depending on the episode pretty much consistently. Dash fans frankly to me seem to be in denial about both her record on the show and who she even is as a character. The Wonderbolts have been kind of a mess for a while now though yeah. OmegaBeamOfficial 622 September 14, 2016 Share September 14, 2016 I don't get why ponies tend to immediately slam down on the Wonderbolts whenever they're featured in an episode. Now, on the other hand Newbie Dash is one of my least favourite episodes of the Season by far, but I think the main issue (just one out of a few other things I didn't like mind you) is that the plot wasn't handled right. Spitfire should have explained that everyone had nicknames beforehand once Rainbow started acting strange so the whole situation could have been better resolved, but then I guess we wouldn't have a plot. Kyoshi Frost Wolf 41,730 September 14, 2016 Share September 14, 2016 This episode was trash and this right here is one of the many reasons why. The Wonderbolts in the entire episode came off as a bunch of arrogant pricks that had little to no sympathy. Then the end of the episode happens and it turns out that Rainbow was just being a paranoid moron I guess and the Wonderbolts were completely in the right, because 'hazing'. Don't worry Rainbow, they treat ALL of their new recruits like crap for no reason! Somehow Rainbow still wanted to be part of the group despite her own idols actually be pretty unlikable. There are reasons to why I hate this episode so much.
