gaming Any Sonic Fans? How Do You Feel About How The Internet Treats The Series?

There will always be those who pine for the classics and refuse to acknowledge the newer games.

Yes, and those people are pretty much satisfied, in fact they're one of the few crowds SEGA pays attention to.

Sega wants to bring back the glory days of the Sonic franchise which involves reviving the classic feel of the brand. Sonic Mania is a step in the right direction but they can't ignore the modern iteration even if it hasn't always been a smooth ride. The comics have kind of done the same thing. They started out goofy but then became dark and serious before moving it back towards goofy but with dark and serious tones thrown in for good measure.

I think the internet treats it right, its a cringy fandom and everyone OC is just a recolor of sonic with really really bad fictions made for it that are really cring worthy.

Not all of it, I'll agree I've seen a lot of bad OC's, but as for fanfics, that goes for ANY fandom, that's not to say all fanfiction is bad, but every fandom will have It's share of bad fanfics, MLP has it, Sonic has it, everyone has it. I think It's also a bit of a stretch to say EVERY OC is bad though, I've seen good ones out there... Is it really too much to ask that Sonic gets the same respect as Mario, when the Mario fandom does all the same things you mention here?

True but we've seen how the modern Sonic games have fared over the years since the transition to 3D. It's been a mixed bag so that means Project Sonic 2017 needs to do everything right and leave out anything that could make it wrong.

Well, they haven't all been a mixed bag. Sonic Generations and Lost World were both pretty great.

Being someone who likes Mario as much as she likes Sonic, I can tell you there is a fandom and good heavens is it cringey.  It's full of people whining over stupid things like which of the three princess characters is the best and there's a lot of negativity in general.

Sonic Colours and Sonic Generations were pretty great although Sonic Lost World wasn't as well received especially if you look at the reviews and what the fandom said about it. I personally thought Lost World was an okay game although it did have flaws in terms of character development and the infamous Red Rings.

Games like Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic '06, Sonic and the Secret Rings, and Sonic Free Riders are among the more bad games in the series for obvious reasons.

This sort of thing is in every fandom though, It's not exactly surprising...

It kinda surprises me a little bit though because when I was younger and more active in the fandom, people were much nicer.  But yeah, I see your point.

The infamous red rings? Sorry but I burst out laughing at that. Am I the only one who found the Generations red rings harder to get than the ones in Lost World? In honesty though, looking at the two side by side, I do prefer Generations.

You know what's sad about those four games? They all had potential, but it was squandered by bad decisions. Shadow getting his own game sounded awesome, but they had to make it super edgy and dark, with a confusing plot line and tedious missions. Sonic 06 even had potential, but the clearly rushed release along with how badly the plot was handled and SEGA trying to cram so many things into the game at once along with it being infested with bugs held it back, and I could go on about more problems but, well, ya know... Sonic in storybooks? Sure, why not, sounds neat. I've never played Secret Rings myself, but I hear the same story I every time, the controls were terrible. I would love to see a Riders 4, but that ain't happening after Free Riders, we were finally getting a new Riders game, but they decided to implement the Kinect, and Sonic Riders style gameplay doesn't work with the Kinect, not to mention it was a bad move anyway because the Kinect flopped in the end.

With Sonic '06, Sega wanted the game released in time for the PS3 and Xbox 360 launches, yet Sonic Team wasn't even close to finishing it, so they did as much as they could before handing it in and the result is the unbridled mess that had become the absolute lowest point for the franchise. Shadow the Hedgehog effectively retconned events from Sonic Adventure 2 but not in a good way so now we have a plotline that makes no sense and effectively ruins a major point from a game that was still received well--S.A.2. The storyline book series had potential but a combination of poor controls and giving Sonic abilities that went against his character and gameplay style doomed them both.

Even the classic games had their problem entries. Sonic Labyrinth for the Game Gear was an absolute disaster while Sonic 3D Blast for the Genesis/Sega Saturn suffered from poor controls and an isometric view that wasn't as good as expected.

Sonic Team's and to an extent, Sega's, problem is that they keep on changing the Sonic formula every few games rather than attempt to tweak what they currently have until it's as close to perfect as they can make it. They need to have consistency and not rely on gimmicks that go against what the franchise stands for, and they really do need to work on the camera issues.

Personally part of why I like the Sonic series so much is because of the fact that they always change things up. It gets boring playing the same few gamestyles over and over. Particularly oldschool Sonic formula made anew. I have no real interest in that Sonic Mania thing because it's too tired and done.

Some of those changes don't always work out for the best while others did end up being a good idea for them to go with. One idea I enjoyed was Tails' and Eggman's gameplay in Sonic Adventure 2. I love walking around in their respective mechs and destroying everything around me using missiles, lasers, and anything else they have.

Generally speaking I like all the changes. I don't necessarily like the fact that they didn't work well but as for the ideas themselves it's what kept me interested in every game. The swordplay in Black Knight, the werehog in Unleashed, etc. All these were amazing ideas in theory.

I personally don't see anything wrong with the Werehog mechanic in Unleashed. I thought it was an interesting idea to give Sonic the ability to use physical attacks and other forms of combat instead of simply running through a level at top speed.

So, anyone like Sonic and Amy ship? I know that Sega said that it will never happen, but I still like it.

There's a reason why Sega doesn't want it to happen. They don't want Sonic tied down in a relationship as that would take away his carefree attitude that he's been known to have. Granted, the Archie comics did have him involved in two relationships but those are no longer canon due to the mandate Sega imposed a few years ago.

It's a sad tale indeed. Hell, I'm pretty sure they weren't even intending to retcon it, the story was literally just so bad that it ended up ruining Shadow's plotline and any chance of further exploring it.

Pretty much agreed here, while I want to see SEGA improve on their current core formula, a part of what keeps Sonic fresh in the games is the new mechanics, granted they could use some work. I didn't like SA2's treasure hunting for example, I find the first game did it better. I also think Unleashed's Werehog combat worked rather well, though looking back, it could have been executed a little better.

I personally don't support SonAmy, but put down your pitchforks and torches, alright, let me explain. Sonic has clearly shown, right back to Sonic CD, that he has no damn interest in Amy, he just considers her a friend and will save her life if she needs to be saved, but that's because It's Sonic's thing to rescue all the animals. I personally support Sonic X Blaze more but to each their own.

Sonic 3D Blast was seen as the odd-one out among the Sonic games released on the Genesis. I had no problems with it myself but you could tell that it had its flaws that ruined the overall experience. The Game Gear version was even worse although not many remember it since it came out right near the end of the handheld's lifespan.

The Treasure Hunting mechanic wasn't that good either so I'm glad that it didn't make a return after Sonic Adventure 2. The Werehog mechanic was originally going to be Knuckles since physical combat is what he's known for, but he was dropped during game development and Sonic himself would ultimately assume that role. Another thing to note would be Sonic the Hedgehog 4 in that both episodes had mixed results that show that going back to the classic feel only works if you do it right.

In the comics, Sonic did start a relationship with Amy after he was dumped by Sally and when Fiona Fox revealed that she had been cheating on him with Scourge, but it didn't really go that far until he and Sally got back together. That was retconned out of existence because Sega no longer allows comic characters and official characters to be in a relationship or be related.

There was a game gear version? And I'll agree maybe Knuckles would have made more sense for Unleashed, but I don't mind the Werehog.  just wish SEGA would actually use all their characters more, we have plenty who haven't been a main part of the games for years.

Jeez, stuff like this reminds me of how 4Kids censored any hint of a relationship in Sonic X. And here I was thinking Sonic had one media where they actually went into relationships, guess that's not happening anymore.

There was one, Sonic Blast, released in 1996. It used a pseudo 3D effect although to be brutally honest, it looked absolutely terrible and was a far cry from the four main Sonic Game Gear platformers: Sonic, Sonic 2, Sonic Chaos, and Sonic Triple Trouble. Sonic and Knuckles were both playable--not Tails--and generally went through the same game. I played it a couple of times but I just couldn't get over the awkward graphics.

Sega using the other Sonic characters more often is another double-edged sword. There are those in the fandom who want to see them utilized more often, yet others only want Sonic to be playable since he is the main character.

Again, blame Sega for issuing their mandate and all because of the lawsuit fallout.
