The thing is they wouldn't be jokes.  If they were to include a same-sex couple in the show (which they more than likely won't because reasons that have been explained), exactly what would make it worse than every episode with Shining Armor and Cadance, or Yankee Doodle Donkey and Matilda?

Remember a couple of years ago when Sesame Street got in trouble for adult humor? If MLP got angry parent phone calls about a similar controversial thing like lesbians, that would be a pretty big travesty.

I wouldn't call it a travesty, as that implies that the event was represented in an absurd or false manner.  It would be a fiasco, for sure, with fundies and soccer moms sending angry letters and phone calls to Hasbro threatening to forbid their children from watching the show if that episode wasn't pulled or censored.

 

Also, I don't remember that incident, so you'll have to enlighten me.

This was never confirmed, though it was heavily implied in the 100th Episode, aka, the episode where DHX pandered to the fandom, and from the tone they used when talking to each other to the way they were looking at each other, it wouldn't be too large of a leap to say that their relationship was more than just platonic.  Having said that, however, it was never explicitly acknowledged by anyone at DHX or Hasbro that Lyra and Bonbon are anything but really good friends, and therefore, remains unconfirmed.

It won't happen though I wish it would. I think the important thing here is a blatant and shoe-horned homosexual relationship vs a natural one. For example, it's very natural in some shows the way a man will say at a christmas episode about bringing his boyfriend over for dinner, and I think that's a good way, because it doesn't abnormalise it trying to normalise it and draw attention to it, but just slips it in as a regular event instead.

 

Which would be opposed to what some shippers want, which is some tongue action and practically putting up a neon sign that says LESBIANS HERE!

I hope so, but I don't want any token characters just for the sake of diversity. It would be great if they picked out a character at random that has shown no evidence of a relationship and make them the gay character. I think Family Guy or some show did a similar thing and it worked out great, as it taught that not everyone is complete stereotype. The only problem is, having a gay character would only subtract the population, as would adding in politics, religion and so on.

Regardless of anyone's opinion on the matter, it'll never happen. This is Hasbro, not nickelodeon and certainly not Cartoon Network. These companies aren't even in the same ballpark for demographic and what they deem unacceptable to air.

It will never happen but I seriously wish a show like this could have some LGBT characters. Not because I feel some 'need to be represented' but rather because I want the media to stop being so damn afraid of it all. So they can show that having a gay character isn't the end of the world.
