Why is Sunet Shimmer some people favorite character even over MLP characters

Because some people really like her? Same reason some people pick Twilight as their favorite, or Fluttershy, or Rainbow Dash, Or Luna or whatever. They relate to her, or look up to her, or just really like her. Her being from EQG doesn't really change anything.

Admittedly, many Sunset fans don't exactly seem like "fans" to me. I think "zealots" would honestly be a more appropriate word. People staunchly hold her up as the single greatest thing that has ever come from G4 MLP, and they are almost disturbingly entitled when it comes to her. 

 

For starters, they hold to the notion that she belongs in FiM, as though there's just a spot in the mane cast waiting for her when she returns. They also hold the notion that she is going to be revealed to be an alicorn when her pony form is shown again, despite there being no evidence whatsoever to support this. Starlight Glimmer has received plenty of hate from Sunset fans who believed her to be "stealing" her mane seventh spot. And there was also plenty of disgust towards Legend of Everfree when the DVD/Blu-ray cover was first revealed: 

 

 

As you can see, Twilight is front-and-center here, implying that she, not Sunset, would be the main character of the film. Sunset fans were outraged, because how dare Twilight steal focus away from Sunset? 

 

To further display the zealotry that revolves around Sunset, I'd like to show something I came across a few months ago:

This is a story titled "Sunset Shimmer is Perfect", that goes on to indeed insist that she's perfect, and then reveals to be an alicorn at the end. And as you can see, this story ended up being quite popular and well-received. 

 

Can you honestly see this sort of thing going as well for any other character? I just can't see there being a whole lot of love for a story titled "Fluttershy is Perfect" or even "Twilight Sparkle is Perfect." But for Sunset Shimmer, somehow, this is an appropriate assessment. She's apparently a Mary Sue, and there's nothing wrong with that whatsoever. 

 

Yeah, Sunset fans....they kinda scare me. I wouldn't say all of them are this bad, but I've definitely seen a level of devotion towards her that I haven't seen in the fans of any other character.

Well I didn't know about that. But it's always felt strange since was really only the main character in Rainbow Rocks.

Like her, I was looked down upon by my peers and bullied as a result, and I struggled to find my place in a world that didn't understand what kind person I was. I also like how she uses her personal experiences to help ensure others don't end up making the same mistake. Oh, and like her, I do lose my temper and can be rather aggressive about it. To me, it doesn't matter that she comes from Equestria Girls, or whether she will appear in the show or not. To me, Sunset is someone who appeals to me in a way other characters can't.

I can understand that. The character I relate the most to would probably be Spike. And a lot of people hate him. So I understand why you'd like Sunset.

Spike's popularity might have increased a little bit thanks to his amazing episodes throughout season six. Those were the kind of episodes that he had been needing since the show began, yet they weren't conceived until now leaving him as a character who fans weren't looking forward to his episodes because of certain flaws that proved cringe-worthy.

Its different for me. I liked Spike since episode 3 and have like all of his episodes. Though the reasons I like him are mandatory different than most. He's supposed to be the comic relic character. The character that the writers are mean to for no reason expect because they can. It'd be one thing if Spike was a jerk. But he's actually a nice guy. He loyal, kind, brave. Yet even then the writers still picked on him. Even though these types of characters are usually the ones writers want you to hate I almost always immediately like them. Even more than the characters your supposed to like. So for me it makes me happy to see the writerss not poop(can't use a stronger word without getting banned) on him and treat him with respect.

She's also one of the few proactive people in the series. Unlike Twilight or Starlight, Sunset sees what's going on and works to stop it before it happens (though that really doesn't work out to much hehe) unlike the other two who are much more reactive, only going after something after it's happened or they're told to.

She also has some good chemistry with the cast and works with them well so her integration is well received.

I like Sunset Shimmer. But not over regular mlp characters. She just hasn't had as much screen time. Maybe if the specials for EQG lead to a tv show then I might like her more.

Personally I think Starlight had a better story. But I see what you mean. She is one of the more likable character in the series. I also think she has the best human design. All of the other characters in my opinion look much better as ponies.

I liked Starlight' s story better. I think they did a better job in portraying it. But I still do enjoy Sunset. Hopefully she has more interactions with the human seven. It'd be cool to see more of there relationship.
