Do unicorns even have the duty to study?

I am not even sure what you are asking.

The only unicorns I ever see truly "studying" are those who are pursuing magic as a hobby/career/passion.

The majority of unicorns out there just do their own thing from what we have seen, pretty much like everyone else.

Well, Rarity went at least to a regular school...

But I do not think that it is the duty of a uniorn to study.

That would be like saying that it is the duty of an earth pony to work on a farm. ._.

If I may shed some light on this subject.

Well unicorns don't have to, unless if needed to in case of an attack. Lets say for example, like changelings. The bad kind to be exact.

Now what will a certain individual as a unicorn would do if not in study from earlier subjects in education?

Answer: Basically he will have his/her face caved in and may not live to tell about it. Thats the truth and it does hurt.

Haha, not!

Still, since how Equestria is so far and the countless number of foes they faced. I should say its necessary as it is for self defense!

Not learning these tactics from books would be considered inexcusable. Thus, rendering the unicorn weak and open too any attacks.

In summery, yes its necessary to continue with education on certain spells that he/she would use in battle. If not, well then stick a fork in them and call in the medics! Ah hahaha!

Ahem, so yeah that is my info on this.

..Pretty..well..sai.d..there..

Appreciated.

Considering that this discussion is more about aspects from the show rather than general bronydom-ness or material outside the show, I will be moving this over to Show Discussion :)

I do not believe Unicorns are really required to learn how to cast spells, but they can certainly seek the education for it. They have the capability of learning and training and even receiving higher education if they want.

We know from the cartoon itself that most unicorns have the ability to cast only a few spells that are directly linked their talent.  Rarity for example, has only the ability to use the assorted types of magic that allow her to find gems and make clothes, Trixie only knows spells of illusion and showmanship.

Unicorns like Twilight (and a few others) are a separate case entirely in that magic itself is their talent, and so she is compelled not externally, but rather from within herself, to study and learn as much as she possibly can.

I wouldn't say it is a 'duty' of any kind to do so, but I bet it is encouraged, simply so they can get an earry grasp on their magical abilities and not accidentally shoot laser beams in a restaurant. Unless using magic is something that just comes along naturally for unicorns.

Not sure how you mean that. If you mean "Do Unicorns have a duty to study to be wizards?"  I'll point to Starlight Glimmer & say that EQ's answer would seem to be a resounding "NO!  Study is a privilege & not for everyone" It's one of the most clearly dystopian things in the show

You know the old medieval social division of "those who work, those who fight and those who pray"? I realized in recent weeks that the 3 pony tribes (at least in pre-Equestrian tribes) kind of fit the bill there. (Except for unicorns not really being clergy)

I would have brohoofed this if it weren't for your bit on Trixie. GAHH, I hate that bit of fanon. It makes zero sense with Trixie's original episodes (though some lines in her S6 episodes might suggest the actual writers are going that route too now).
