i wonder why you didnt like toph? i'll agree that while i can appreciate katara's motherly nature, she can be sometimes overly bossy (e.g. the waterbending scroll)

do you mean the main 5 of them?

Toph is only there in the show just to teach Aang Earthbending. I personally don't think she contributes anything else to the show other than her support and being too overly confidant (aka an arrogant jerk with a heart of gold) with her abilities despite being blind.

To me, she's the least developed in comparison to Katara. At least, Katara's integral to the show. Even in the opening intro she's the narrator . In a way I do feel sorry for her as a person who lost her mother from the Fire Nation. Seems like a psychological trauma she's going through where she's trying to be like her mother. Hence the motherly and bossy nature.

even though katara lost her mother, she still has her father and sokka. i felt like she should change her character by following either her brother or her father. while typing, i'm not exactly saying she shouldn't behave like a mom anymore (where you mentioned she inherited her mother's character after sacrificing herself to the fire nation). honestly, even though she's still a kid, she still could've have the chance to learn either from her brother or father while growing up. such a shame she doesn't (that's why she was a lot arrogant than toph, imo )

while i agree toph's only purpose was to train aang's earthbending, i feel like her role is good enough for the group (she actually puts in her own weight to the team). after all, aang does need these bending skills to be the avatar, right?

While I agree with where you're coming from with Toph, I just don't find her THAT interesting. The only tragedy of her story is that she is blind and wants to follow her dreams being an Earthbender, but her parents are too overprotective and wouldn't let her. Plus, they're filthy stinkin rich so boo hoo for you Toph. Idk, I just don't find this all that of an engaging tragedy for me to sit through.

Katara's tragedy speaks so many volumes to her as a person. Her mother's death is what makes her develop into a character. Does it mean I like her? No. But it does make her feel sympathetic. I guess in the Water Tribes maybe its a cultural issue where Daughters must put their first and utmost attention and devotion to their Mothers. Katara would not have been the same character we see on the show if her mother wasn't dead in the first place. And honestly, if she wasn't then Katara would easily be my most least favorite character in the show since she would have none.

perhaps you are right about sympathizing katara's tragedy and disregarding toph's tragedy (i prefer her humor over katara's, btw). bryke have incorporated some/at least most of the asian philosophies when they created fire, water and earth kingdom. although i don't follow these philosophies, your reason does make sense about mothers passing their roles onto their daughters.

For the majority of the series I do end up liking her even when she acts Mary Sue-ish at times. Yeah she may fall for guys at the drop of a hat and yeah she flip flops with how she treats people over the show but with the circumstances as they were I imagine anyone would be confused as hell.

At least thats how I feel in all expect one episode. And I think you all may know what episode im talking about. The episode that stepped over line from dedication and drive to outright intentionally hurting the people around her. Im not say its not a good character moment and I do really like the addition of it but its one that will forever influence my opinion of her.

aha! i remember this episode. I can not/remember not feeling sorry for her at all. i just think this episode was just katara selfishly lusting for revenge instead of facing the big picture. what i strongly dislike this episode (southern raiders.  back then i used to root for katara because I thought the episode was great for her "character development") is the gang forgave her too easily after all the disrespect and ingratitude she shoved to them. what's worse is this isn't the first time she actually does it

I do agree she's a mary-sue and the girl who falls for guys too easily. She's useful/likable in some episodes. but for the rest of the show. she's an ungrateful hypocritical jerk

I have only seen this series in its entirety only a single time but I can rekindle not being particularly fond of Katara. I did not find her character to be at all intriguing with the exception of being a water bender and having the ability to blood bend. Other than those two factors, I found her to be rather bland and a character whom I looked over more oftne than not. However, I can comprehend as to why some viewers like her.

you took the words right out of my mouth. she's definitely a mary-sue

I doubt it. Granted personally I love her, all of the main female characters in that show where badass as hell.

on that, i agree all of the females are badasses. i still think their personalities were bland, despite that you adore them

lol Man that's just my opinion, and Katara wasn't a universally hated character. Listen it's been awhile since I watched the show so I do remember every single incident that happend.

That's not hostile though. That's more of a diffusion, a way of respectfully backing out. I was just saying that I couldn't remember every specific moment in the show you might reference.
