Starlight Glimmer

In season 5, Starlight Glimmer had a different voice and personality. In season 6 - present, she had a different voice and personality as if she had a reset button. Why does she have a different personality and voice now? How did it happen? How come starlight glimmer from season 5 sound like a 30 year old or something and present sounds like a teen or 20+?

She has a different personality in season six because everything she thought was true ended up false. It utterly shattered her worldview, and now she’s trying to scrape her life back together into something she can live with. Depending on how old you think she actually is, either her extreme arrogance, anger, and bitterness in season five made her sound older than she actually is, or her uncertainty, guilt, and fear make her sound younger than she actually is in season six.

I’m assuming you've just started season six, there are quite a few time in the season where we see bits of her old self poke through.

The voice is still the same (Kelly Sheridan) but if you mean why does it sound different than her antagonistic voice, it's because she's supposed to feel like a new changed character.

I'd say this is almost a trope at this point.

The reformed character always talks with a gentler voice. Listen to Rebecca as Sunset in EqG vs RR. Listen to John de Lancie as Discord in Return of Harmony vs. Princess Twilight Sparkle, heck listen to Emily Blunt as Tempest in the beginning of the film vs the end. They all speak with a lightness in their vocals once they are reformed, and you can't argue Discord or Tempest had a reset button moment.

It's just her tone that has changed. She used to speak with a manipulative tone filled with anger and pride for her regime which made her sound more formal and uptight. Now that she's free from her old ideologies we hear her talk with more emotion, she speaks as herself now rather than some crazed dictator and this gives her a softer more varied tone which represents her transition to a nicer pony.

Well after Twilight took her under her wing and showed her a different view to things, Starlight did change pretty drastically as a character, but that was all due to her reformation and the learning of true friendship, which obviously back in season 5 she didn't have.

When you reform, you turn down your voice to show people who forgave you that you are nice :muffins:

About personality change, you cant just act like whatever your awful former self did under someone's wings who just welcome you at their glorious castle of friendship instead of throwing you into jail or doing local service, only Discord can do this because he's god so he has no bound.

Mind you, Starlight isnt being Rebooted, she is being Restarted because her system was messed up with too many programs and background app that need to restart to work CORRECTLY again (I just used PC as metaphor just in case you might be confused).

Post-reformation Starlight and Discord are interesting case, their habits still not change right away and struggle to fit the society, Fluttershy has to keep Discord in check and Twilight has to keep Starlight in check so they wont go back to their own ways. Twilight deconstructed her worldview and even teach her friendship and many healthy activities, how could she act like she was before? Ah wait,  Every Little Thing She Does..... :please:

Our voice is our primary instrument of our self-expression. It is heavily influenced by our experiences. How we chose to use (or limit) this instrument reveals so much about our self-perceived strengths, weaknesses, and values that your voice is often a phenomenal roadmap of our life's travels. Often, experiences from our past when we were still young greatly effect our vocal qualities and delivery.

All of that explains Starlight perfectly fine. Also, you may have noticed the changes, but she likely hasn't. :)

She’s no longer malevolent or quite as confident, but one can see how the destruction of her worldview might cause that. She still carries some of her old personality traits, however.

I don’t think her voice has changed.

What do you except? She is Twilight’s other half or doppelgänger...much like in Kingdom Hearts II with Roxas being Sora’s Nobody....right?

I don’t think this is true.

I have a sudden feeling that Starlight might become permanently evil again by betraying the Mane Six....I've always wanted this moment to happen!

You have a sudden feeling about something that you have always wanted to happen and have communicated on this forum before? You a time traveller? Did you go back in time and tell yourself this creating such a paradox?

I think it was confirmed a while back that Starlight originally wasn't supposed to be reformed and become a recurring character.  If that is the case, than this explains the radical shift in her personality between the season 5 premiere and season 5 finale and onward.  Assuming that her reformation was a last minute decision, because with how it was handled in the Cutie Re-Mark, it really, really, really feels that way.

I would say her personality shift in The Cutie Map to The Cutie Remark was very natural. In The Cutie Map she was in a very comfortable position, and we even see towards the end she is getting more hyper and worked up. Which is much more like her personality in The Cutie Remark, she isn't as calm and collected. I would say the "radical shift" was the Cutie Remark to The Crystalling, we don't see anything to show she has struggled to change, ofc we get that in some form throughout the seasons that she doesn't quite know how to control herself yet. Which is still a problem (though she is more responsible with her ideas now)

Idk, you are probably right, but I have trouble believing Starlight wasn't meant to be reformed from the start.

It was confirmed that DHX wanted to add her to the cast list but seriously this "last minute reformation" theory needs to stop. Think about everything it takes to create an episode of MLP. After the writing for each episode is done-all at the same time-then it goes onto storyboarding and voice recording. This happens real earlier on so that they can get the voice actors to record all their lines at the right opportunity without hassle. What this theory is suggesting is not only halfway through the development of this episode did they call back in Kelly, Tara, Cathy, Ashleigh, Andrea, and Tabitha for re-reads on the final lines but also re-write several Season 6 episodes (whose synopses had been assigned by November 2014) including both the premiere and finale. The only reason I agree with the adding her to the cast at a later time has to do with the song, all of which are recorded at later times because of Daniel's work schedule. The song makes it clear she is part of the group but that is after she was reformed, after the realization of her backstory. I'd say it's most likely Hasbro wanted to reform her, thus showing Twilight's strength as the Princess of Friendship, and the send her on her way to be replaced by villian of the next season, but again that happened way early on in the writing process. The writers wanted to give Twilight a student to continue her parallels with Celestia, and with Hasbro nixing Sunset's involvement in the main series early on, they decided the next parallel to Twilight would do nicely. And that's the only attachment to Sunset Starlight has, none of this "cashing in on her popularity" nonsense. This was all decided a while before Rainbow Rocks even aired.

I have to check the claim but I should point out that the development pipeline doesn't eliminate or disprove the theory as it could have happened during the writing summit or even during revision --before voicework was scheduled. This isn't an unheard of concept, and it's routinely mentioned in acting to guest stars interested in continuing their role ... often referencing Janel Moloney from West Wing.

The best way to get people to stop is to pop on Twitter or go to a convention and simply ask the people that know. In my experience asking others to cease a theory on the internet is like shouting into the void.

Trust me, it drives me crazy too when people forget how the show is made.

Whoops I guess I negected to mention we knew the voice recording had already been scheduled and completed by the time the SDCC animatic aired back in the Summer of 2014, which is what I meant by bringing them all back.

But yeah you're right getting answers at a con would be the best (I need to get there first). I don't know how open Josh or Jim would be in discussing a random three year old occurance over Twitter. Although maybe Kelly might remember when she recorded that finale with no NDA to worry about. (Now if only I had a twitter :scoots:)

I know Starlight was pretending to be reformed because she double-crossed Twilight and her friends, so that’s why she was FAKING it in the first place. That would foreshadow her betrayal in upcoming S8 for sure. Right?

Well to be honest with you @AlexanderThrond She was the Victim all the way...technically she might betray them in S8 and speaking of, She is still Twilight's doppelganger or Other Half a la Kingdom Hearts II. She is planning very evil in the future, but who knows.
