Does that mean I suck? Cause I have never heard of Linux. :(

Of course it doesn't, lots of people have no idea

what it is, I didn't know what linux was until late 2008

actually, but now you have heard of it ;)

I try to go to sign in, but nothing happens. I always end up on facebook somehow

That's weird, I think it has to do with the JavaScript pop-up login thing.

I had to go on the default version for it to work.

well you should always backup your data, no matter what you do with your computer.

i don't think it would erase data, but i would seriously consider a backup of your important data

for safety. you never know what can go wrong.

fixparts is only supposed to fix mbr and partition table problems, it shouldn't actually erase any data.

but backing up first then doing it would be the safer choice.

whatever you think is the right choice.

Ok, I've go the enclosure (it's actually quite nice, StarTech InfoSafe) and put my 500 gb hdd in there. I need to reformat it, since there is a lot of useless junk on it. Right now, I'm trying to put the stuff i want to save from the hard drive ON my computer, then i will clear it out and back every thing onto it. Then, I will go through with fixing the partitions and finally getting rid of windows on my computer (i'm sorry windows 7 users, it just isn't cut out for me, since I am best with linux!).

Thank you all for helping me though something most linux forums didn't help with

Ok. Windows is gone! My Hdd has more space, My pony stuff is fine, and now I have an extra 500 gb when i need it thanks to my enclosure!

Some parting questions with this topic, though

in order for the whole thing to work, I had to use parted magic instead of my normal linux mint. Any thoughts?

Also, There are a bunch of random looking partitions I think windows made, but I'm not sure... Should I delete them?

And how do you make the swap (or lengthen it)?

Hey, I'm wondering if any of you guys can help me.

My tablet came with Windows XP Tablet PC installed. Well apparently, it wasn't a legit copy, and Genuine Advantage kept bothering me. To make matters worse, Acer no longer offers Windows XP recovery CDs, and I don't have the money to get a license, or a new computer.

I've been thinking of switching to Ubuntu, but there's a problem, my processor doesn't support PAE (Physical Address Extension), and the current Ubuntu only has a PAE kernel. There happened to be an unofficial version of it with a non-PAE kernel, which I'm using right now, but it has quite a few problems, and its a bit frustrating to use.

So, TL;DR, I don't have money to buy a new computer, or a copy of Windows XP. Which Linux distro is the BEST I can get that still supports non-PAE capable hardware?

After a little reading, I learned Xubuntu and Lubuntu have non-PAE kernels. I've also heard that Ubuntu 12.10 will go back to a non-PAE kernel.

Yeah, after a bit more looking I figured out that OpenSUSE supports a generic kernel too, but I ended up going with Lubuntu, I like the Ubuntu distros, but plain old Ubuntu was giving me problems.

So far, Lubuntu has been pretty good, and its very lightweight and fast. And it feels good to be away from Windows. Now I just need to get more software.

Thanks for your help, I appreciate it! I wish the information was a bit more accessible... haha

Yes I would recommend getting rid of the unknown and unallocated partitions, they

don't appear to be of any use.

Then you need to right click on the unallocated space you want to use and make a new partiton,

then you need to format as linux-swap:

post-22-0-28955400-1338498422_thumb.png

then you need to right click on the partition and choose swapon to use it as swap space,

you can also swapon in the terminal

swapon /dev/PARTITON

it is also possible to use a file as swap space instead of a partition:

http://www.cyberciti...wap-file-howto/

After a little reading, I learned Xubuntu and Lubuntu have non-PAE kernels. I've also heard that Ubuntu 12.10 will go back to a non-PAE kernel.

I hear it is also possible to use 12.04 if you use a mini iso, and set up the non-pae kernel.

Mini iso here: http://www.archive.u...etboot/non-pae/

Guide here: http://www.webupd8.o...on-non-pae.html

Someone also made a version here of 12.04 with the non-pae kernel included: https://bugs.launchp...447/comments/84

you probably find it easier though to just use lubuntu or xubuntu, if your using one of those and really want the ubuntu interface you could install it

easily

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

or kubuntu-desktop for KDE.

There is 11 gb that are now not used, should I turn only 6 into swap?

I did anyway...

I first used the mini.iso and then installed XFCE. I tried again with Unity. Either way, the system kept having problems, and just wouldn't work right, that's right before I made my post. I've switched to lubuntu, which works a heck of a lot better. Just a few minor problems, but I'll fix them after I get situated.

I've used Wine to get Office installed. Once I get my files working well with it, I'm switching to LibreOffice. I would like to have Paint.NET, since I like it more than Gimp, but alas, it uses .NET Framework, so I might not be able to do it without a VM.

You could try pinta: http://pinta-project.com/

it is meant to work similarly to pain.net.

There was a effort once to port paint.net

but it isn't worked on any more, http://code.google.com/p/paint-mono/

Ok, thanks! I'll check out Pinta. I dunno, I don't like the way Gimp is set up, and its a pain to use, even if I don't use it often. I was gonna try and get Paint.Net running through wine, but the AppDB shows that people have tried, and failed. If it didn't rely on .Net, it would probably work.

Windows might be the one with most supported apps, but Linux takes care of that using Wine. Plus, Linux is FREE!!! Linux Forever!!!

No more "Genuine Advantage", UAC, and most importantly: NO VIRUSES!!!! Whoo!

GIMP, Pinta, Photoshop... All the same to me... :)

Anyone have Linux installed into their USB's?

I have two of them, one with puppy linux, and the other with ubuntu 12.04

Have you tried the new gimp 2.8? You might like the single window mode

Feature that it has now.

Let's see if anyone can help me so I don't need to do a system restore.

I have a 1080p monitor and a 1620x1050 monitor but the 1080 has bars around it.

I checked the monitor settings, they are fine.

The image is smaller than the monitor:

I formatted the backup harddrive to FAT, but it seems to have problems holding certain files with certain characters in the name in file name. For some reason. it will just say it is a improper file type or something. Should I change the file system to ext3, since that is what the my computer has and it has no problems with these files?

Edit: never mind, I think I fixed it. It was my USB hub (that makes sense, right?)

Awesome! I didn't expect to find one of these here! I'm currently running Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot, and it's possibly the best thing to ever happen to me! I LOVE this operating system! I couldn't stop after Ubuntu, though. I downloaded VirtualBox and got Fedora as well. After toying around with them, I'd decided to get the OS trinity on one computer. I now have Windows 95, Mac OS 6, and Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot on one computer, including a few others like Fedora and MS-DOS.

hmm, could you run this command for me, and post its output.

xrandr

lets see what the max resolution the system is reading in, then we can try adding

a extra one.

try this: http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-change-display-resolution-settings-using-xrandr.html#more-3469
