general Anypony Ever Done Work At An Animal Shelter?

I'm considering making the trip to my nearest animal shelter to lend a hand. Before I make the trip though, any of you ever volunteered or even worked for one? Any advice for a newbie?  Any myths or misconceptions you'd like to bust? What does the work at the shelter actually entail?

I volunteered shortly as a teen. As a “Cat Cuddler”.

I basically went there to pet and snuggle kitties so they could be more socialized.

If I volunteered again, hopefully I’d get to help more since I’m an adult. The only real advice I’d be able to give at the moment is make to to clean your hands a LOT, so not to spread germs around to the animals in the shelter.

EDIT: Or spread them to yourself, of course.

I'm working for one currently as an animal cruelty investigator, it's like being a police officer but working on cases that only involve animals. I recommend that you keep yourself clean when handling the animals and to avoid touching your face if you haven't washed your hands. So bottom line is:STAY CLEAN!

ive not done so myself, but my partner and my sister both works at a wildlife rescue (in the UK). I assume the animals vary in different places, but they both said that they dealt with a stupid amount of pigeons.

Ive only ever worked with animals as a stablehand.
