For my latest addition to the pile, my very first NECA Predator figure. Ever.

And not just any Predator, but the Mad Predator from the AvP arcade game! Man, have I got a lot to talk about with this one......

This game's easily my favorite beat-em-up of all time. If you haven't played it, you gotta. And don't tell me it's impossible because there are no arcades in your area. There's always emulation. Find a good emulator (I prefer Fightcade), download it, and play the hell out of it. You owe it to yourself to do this if you're an Alien or Predator fan, or even just a fan of beat em ups in general. Because few companies could match Capcom when it comes to making these games, let alone with a popular franchise. And I'll gladly keep playing this over the "triple A" garbage that's been shat out on the market for the last twenty years.  

As I may have mentioned before, I had already pre-ordered all the player characters, namely the two marines, and both the Predator Warrior and Predator Hunter. I've also ordered the two alien bosses. Hopefully, there won't be any delays and I could get them all before summer. That said, I wasn't sure if I wanted the Mad Predator at first. I love the fact he's as blue as a fucking Smurf, but on the other hand.... he's maskless. I prefer my Predators masked. Then I saw the reviews as soon as he got released, and I decided that he was worth getting anyway for the paintjob alone. And the bendable facehugger and chestburster he comes with are flawless. I don't own any Alien figures, so I had no idea they were that versatile.







I couldn't be more pleased to see all this in person. If you're a long-time collector of Predator figures, you already know what to expect from the reused sculpt. There are some hindrances to the articulation due to the tubes sticking out of the armor, the plasmacaster, and not to mention the dreadlocks. Overall though, the range of movement this Predator has is as good as it can get. Even with all that aside, this feels like it's leagues above any other NECA figure I own. I do have at least two other figures that are painted in this video game deco-style, yet neither of them are this vibrant. They've truly managed to retain the visual aesthetic of Capcom's artwork while staying true to the movie designs. I've already seen all the fine work that was put into the other two Preds in the line just a week ago at a comic shop. And now with this guy in hand, I'm just aching to see how the Aliens and marines are gonna turn out. Those product photos really don't do these figures justice.

Now in case you're wondering, this Predator's blue because he got infected by the Aliens. He had the typical misfortune of getting facehugged and having an embryo implanted. It made him go insane (hence the namesake), and he wants to hunt everything including his own clansmen. Which makes him the boss for the fifth stage, and a major pain in the ass if you don't know how to fight him properly.

It really is a shame that no Predalien boss came out of this. That would have been one badassed xeno figure for NECA to make.

That's not a bad idea. God knows there are many characters who haven't gotten the attention they deserve from these toy companies. This will definitely give us more to discuss.


I guess I'll start with Street Fighter then, because I'm so passionate about it and feel the need to go on a rant. This is my absolute favorite game series of all time, but I have not seen any IP with a worse fandom. I won't get into all the reasons why, but as far as merchandising goes, I just HATE that companies who've acquired the license like NECA, Square-Enix and Storm Collectibles refuse to service anybody except the casual gamers. Street Fighter is a brand with 70 characters; or 90 if you count the EX characters that are owned by Arika. Yet the casuals will only ever support products that focus on the Street Fighter II cast. I'm old enough to remember how revolutionary that game was back in the 16-bit era. I understand why nostalgia would add more value to the original twelve. But goddamn it, there have still been OTHER SF games, each with a wide array of interesting characters who have just as much potential to make good figures. 

Yes, I know that SOTA went belly up for making too many characters the majority doesn't recognize. But that was a fault in their marketing more than anything. If a character isn't popular, just make enough of them to satisfy all the hardcore fans who WILL buy them. Don't try to match the sales projection you want to meet with all the Ryus, Kens and Akumas that keep getting crapped out. There's no reason why we can't get more characters from the Alpha series. And what about the Final Fight characters? The cast from Street Fighter III? IV? They've barely even tapped into V at all; why is Rashid the only new character that has a figure out right now? I swear, every time I see a new toyline based on a numeric sequel with JUST the original twelve, it feels like a slap in the face. They rarely make anyone else, and when they do, they usually default to Cammy or Sakura. That's bullshit.

That said, this is who I want to see from Storm Collectibles. They're doing a bang up job with their SFV figures, but they gotta add more variety than just Alex. 

Urien and Juri


These guys would make one hell of a Urien figure. I never liked him in SFIII where all he wore was a banana hammock, but that pinstripe suit they gave him for SFV elevated him to pimp status. That would be so good to see in plastic. All he would need for accessories are some interchangeable heads and hands, a metallic sphere projectile with a clear stand, and an Aegis Reflector with a clear stand.
 

 

Play Arts really dropped the ball with their SSFIV license. As a new fan favorite, you'd think they would have included Juri in their 1/6 scale line of figures, but they fucking didn't. So now Storm needs to pick up the slack. In a way, I'm glad nobody made a figure for her yet because her new look in SFV is 10x more appealing than her original appearance. That skintight biker outfit of hers could have a very slick paint job to replicate that leathery texture on the game model. She fights primarily with kicks, so she'd have a lot of wind slashing effects to attach to her legs. There isn't really a need for alternate hands, but an alternate head with an active Feng Shui engine in place of her eyepatch would be dope.

So NECA just dropped this photo bomb for their arcade AvP marines on Facebook. And my god...

These look so much better than how they were presented at SDCC. Dutch Schaefer looks JUST like how I would have expected him to look if Arnold Schwarzeneegger signed on for a direct movie adaptation of this game back in the nineties (here's a fun fact: the game was intended to be a tie-in for an AvP movie that got canceled; Arnold was supposed to be in it, and yes, he was going to be a cyberized ancestor of the original Dutch from the first Predator movie). 

And Linn Kurosawa looks a bit more like an anime character now. Her face isn't quite an exact replica of Bengus' artwork, but still a fairly good compromise for a body that's made to look more realistic.

I only have a few star wars figures, mostly tusken raiders since they were my favourite species.  I hope to get some kinnikuman figures though, I keep telling myself I'll try to get them but I never do...

The AvP arcade line doesn't have the standard warrior Alien, so I went and picked up NECA's blue ultimate edition warrior today.

Well, NY Toy Fair 2019 just started today. Plenty of good stuff from Storm Collectibles. But I can't say I'm feeling ecstatic because it's not without its share of disappointments.

I'll start with the good:

We have a finished Iori Yagami:


Looking awesome. With him and Rugal coming out, my old N-Groove team from Capcom vs. SNK 2 will be 2/3 complete. From there, it's just a matter of finding the right customizer to build a Rolento. Since we know Storm won't ever make a Rolento figure because "FUCK YOU, that's why!"

Yeah, that's just how it feels with every new Street Fighter announcement they make. On the one hand, I've always wanted a good Sagat figure. And they're really delivering on that front.



But then we get shit like this:



Not trying to knock Cammy fans. I just don't care to see more of her. For fuck sake, I'm tired of these companies making the same characters. What in the world makes Storm think a Juri Han figure won't sell? Why do they think she's even in SFV in the first place? Don't they know she's a fan favorite?

Hell, they've actually just announced a new Darkstalkers line on the same day.


Don't get me wrong, this is great news. I love Darkstalkers myself. In fact, I'm looking forward to seeing Storm's take on Demitri. Possibly even Jedah. They're two of my favorite villains in all fiction. But really, who remembers anything about this series other than Morrigan and Felicia popping up in Marvel vs. Capcom? They're gonna make figures for some of the most obscure fighting game franchises like this and Samurai Shodown, and yet they can't give us more Street Fighters that originated in post-SFII games? GTFO with that.

So I went and got the other two AvP arcade Predators. I was gonna wait for them to ship with the Aliens and the Dutch/Linn two-pack, but since the distributors seem to get their rocks off delaying pre-orders and pissing off customers, I just said "Fuck it" and got these guys at the nearest comic shop that had them. Guess I'll just have to order Chrysalis and Razor Claws separately and grab them as soon as they're out.

Anyway, the Predator Warrior looks amazing.






The Predator Hunter is.... just okay.






I like that the sculpt is based on the City Hunter from Predator 2, but WTF is up with the paint job? It's not nearly as stylized as the other two figures. It's almost like NECA gave up. If it hadn't been for the naginata and the smart gun he comes with, I would have given this a pass and gotten the original City Hunter. Kind of disappointing, since I've played the Hunter almost exclusively since I downloaded the ROM.

This set's not bad altogether though.


I wish NECA gave them enough articulation so I could recreate this scene from the game.

I guess that's as close anyone's gonna get.

Finally got that Omega Rugal. He's a badass. Now I just need to find a good customizer to put the rest of that pimp suit on him.

Of course, his gravity smash effect isn't complete. I'll have to get the rest of the KOF line-up to get all the pieces, but given the quality of these Storm figures, it's gonna be SO worth it.

And since Storm's digging into obscure gaming territory with these brands, here's one they really ought to invest in.

Anybody besides me remember Red Earth? I'm betting that's a "hell no", but I don't give a damn because that's how good this game was. If they could make figures for each of the four player characters, I would collect them all in a heartbeat. 

Tessa especially. She's one of my favorite females in any fighting game. I know she would look amazing in plastic, and her accessories would be numerous and equally impressive. Kenji too.

My Jim Cameron Alien's already getting loose joints, so I saw this classic Giger Alien from NECA and decided, why not?



I never realized just how different their designs were between movies. I love how you can see the insides of that cranium on the original. That skull in particular. All of a sudden, that Chrysalis boss from the AvP arcade game doesn't seem so weird.

And since I liked Avengers: Endgame so much, I decided to just spend $90 on the Armored Thanos BAF on ebay. Because I don't feel like coughing up double the amount to collect all the Marvel Legends figures that come with each piece.

 

This figure isn't entirely accurate to the movie. You'll know why you actually see it, but in the end, this is the definitive MCU Thanos. As much as I liked him in Infinity War, he's just not the same without that armor. That's like having Batman without the cape.

Since NECA's in the business of making every Alien and Predator that ever was into figures, I say they ought to start looking into a new line based on AvP: Extinction on the PS2.

 

This game is highly underrated. There are only so many designs you can come up with for each species, yet the developers managed to come up with some pretty memorable and outright badass units across all three. I know I'd order quite a few of them if NECA made them into figures.

Such as the Spear Master:

And the Stalker. ESPECIALLY the Stalker:


The Carrier Alien would be really nice to have. This thing would help the hive by transporting facehuggers in its back!
 

The Ravager is the most powerful purebred xenomorph in all creation. If this game was a FPS, this thing would make you shit your pants faster than the cyberdemon.


I also happen to think Extinction had the best Predalien. If you're gonna have an Alien with dreadlocks, don't make them so obnoxious looking. AvP: Requiem got it wrong.


And boy, oh, boy. The K-Series. NECA could bank plenty on these Weyland-Yutani manufactured xenos alone. Just look at that fucking Queen! 


There's even a Predqueen. I can't believe I forgot about this bitch. She was a pain to fight.

And the Exosuit. Gotta have an Exosuit. Who needs a Power Loader?

I'm not sure if it counts, but there's my bakugan. I used to have well over a hundred, but they got lost at some point. At least I still have my dual hydranoid and most of my dragonoids.

I remember I used to collect a lot of Dragon Ball Z action figures when I was young. I also used to collect power rangers and Mega Man figurines, as well. At the moment, the action figures I have are:

- A Naruto Uzumaki action figure from the anime, Naruto Shippuden.

- A Konata Izumi action figure from the anime, Lucky Star.

- A Roxas action figure from the game, Kingdom Hearts 2.

- A Black Rock Shooter action figure from the anime, Black Rock Shooter.

- A Nico Yazawa from the anime, Love Live School Idol Project.

- A Rei Kuroki action figure from the anime, Vividred Operation.
