Is this fandom mature enough?

One thing I worry of, when the topic of an MLP reboot is on the table, and it being aimed at a new, fresh fanbase -one that hasn't been on the FiM ride, and needs the new faces and setting to be introduced to pony and get on board with- is more or less the sabotage of the g4 fandom. A lot of posts from them on various boards say that they'll be on the "g5" ride, they'll give it a chance, they're worried about what "g5" will be- if they'll butcher the characters or not.....but I don't think this fanbase realizes that the reboot isn't FOR them. I worry about the reboot's success if fans of g4 see it and just clash with any new fans that try to join the reboot ride, and things will be torn to shreds in the process. This is the fandom that sent death threats to the staff for canon shipping their pony waifu's, after all.

I'm pretty sure those are the natural fears, and feelings of just about any fanbase when they hear about an upcoming reboot or new series. That's not unique to this fandom at all, find me a single fandom that doesn't react that way and you'll have made a genuine scientific discovery. It's only natural after all, people here are attached to G4, it's the show some of us have been watching for nearly a decade at this point, a lot of people are pretty dang loyal to it. So fearing G5 won't be good, or being hesitant to give it a chance, or just not being interested in it is exactly what I'd expect from some people.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure most people will be fine at the end of the day. Are there going to be some bad apples who insult the staff, or insult the G5 fans? Of course there will be, but they don't make up the majority. If G5 is good quality, it'll be fine. Yeah, there will be some FIM fans who might not ever like it, but that's the case with any reboot, really.

I think most fans are mature enough to handle the transition, but there will always be the loud few that make bronies look far more annoying and childish than we actually are. There may be some drama when the new show premiers, but it shouldn't take too long to settle down, regardless of how good or bad the new show is.

I don't think there is much of a new, fresh fanbase to aim at though.

we have a generation of kids coming up who have never known anything but G4 - previous gens are rarely seen on tv or in the stores, FiM is available on a lot of cartoon channels, including netflix and amazon. many of the younger won't even remember a world when FiM wasn't there....

There is little maturity to be found in the concept of a fandom. Also, maturity has become a poison that gets slipped into just about any heated internet debate, mostly by the side with shittier arguments. Act how you want and leave others be, and if you're in an argument address points not attitude.

All in all, it's not a problem of maturity we're having. It's a problem of identity. We have people whose reasons to watch this show are quite exotic, and I ain't talking about clop. So who are we? People who like ponies? Don't think so. There seems to be only a handful of us whose attitude towards FIM has anything to do with its history, its art, or toys themselves. There are even people who only hang around to talk with their friends. So who are we as a community? Perhaps G5 will be a coup the grâce.

I'm very much looking forward to seeing what will be done with G5. I think the G4 fandom will take it in stride. I doubt if the creators/showrunners would totally ignore a large ready made fanbase anyway.

All fandoms have their small but extremely vocal contingent of super fans who will invariably spaz out on the internet about change. This is true from everything from MLP to Pro Wrestling to anything with a dedicated following. It will happen. It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of how severe.

I've been having to deal with immature MLP fans overreacting to changes not intended for them since 2013. Trust me, they are a vocal minority. So long as G5 is genuinely good, I will defend it, and more importantly, I will just be happy about it pleasing its new audience and lighting a new flame for the fandom.

After all, didn't parts of our fandom belittled and insulted previous generations during pur first years  :dash:?

Your concerns are legitimate ones as there are those within fandoms--even this one--who aren't able to accept that change is coming in the form of the current generation ending in favour of some kind of future endeavour. Most here have come to terms with the obvious truth though deep down they might still be upset. Everyone goes through this process in different ways.

Probably for a good reason. I can really care less for the previous generations since it has no impact on me. I just find it boring and pretty... off putting.

Still, it's no reason to do so, as they did what they intended, and they led to FIM

(On the subject of maturity)

No, and that's okay. Well, on the one side, we have the thoughtful, level headed MLP fans that make this fandom great, on the other, we have whiny, opinionated "MLP fans" that weaken the fandom. Still, that's okay! All fandoms have immature whiners, but that doesn't stop us from loving the show. As for the death threats, that's not okay, but it's also not an accurate depiction of the fandom. as far as I'm concerned. Some people are just weird...

(On the subject of G5)

No comment, really. I'll just wait and see what happens before I judge our fandom's overhype.

While some fans may behave in the way you described, it will only be a minority. Most are mature enough to not act as such, though some will take longer to come around than others.

At first I rejected the zero, but that was because I simply didn't understand it. Now I do.
