Smileys

Yeah.. I think I may have a problem when it comes to using emoticons. :awwthanks:

I guess I just like to have a way of expressing my emotions in a sentence more clearly. I often feel that words alone can be easily misinterpreted,  particularly if you're just joking around or being ironic.

There was a time when the smilies looked like this:

And now they look like this:

Good comparison :ButtercupLaugh:

worse yet, I believe an american company has copyrighted the sideways text smiley, and is aggressively pursuing payments from people...

Do I use smileys a lot ? :dash:

Well .. considering all my online texts on messenger, computer, forum, mail etc :ooh:

I think I use them often :sneer: but not all the time :BornAgainBrony:.  I maybe I could use them more often :squee:

I would say I use emojis a modest amount since I feel like putting too many is weird to me but maybe that's just me. I usually put them on the end of a message or if it's a longer message or reply, at the end of the paragraph to convey a little bit of emotion hehe. :P

I used to use a lot of emoticons, smileys included, but then something went wrong with the forums and all my emotes just turned into little blank squares, so I stopped using them except for rare occasions.

Aside from the internet, when I write little hand-written notes to people, I always put little smiley faces on them; it’s like a signature, kind of.

I think the age of this thread is apparent from the use of the word "Smiley" -- I do not think people tend to use that word now when describing the use of images or icons usually conveying emotions embedded in a body of text.

I do not or at least very rarely use them unless perhaps I am having a conversation specifically about how they are used in online conversations. Personally, I prefer the emoticon over the contemporary Emoji as the former reminds me of early internet.
