I'm interested, but also entirely unfamiliar with the monster tamer games - so, a possibly odd question, but how distraction-friendly is it? As in, can I pick it up and drop it every few minutes, or does it require consistent attention?

Absolutely! It's turn-based and designed for mobile play. And the objectives aren't hard to keep track of. 

1. Explore new places.
2. Catch all the ponies there.
3. Beat all the tamers in sight.
4. Repeat!

Not by the dev team, but someone named Silverstone got it working on his somehow (details in the community Discord's #fandom-feats channel). We're still about a year away from a full Steam release, so keep an eye out for that.
