Unicorns are one trick pony?

I have noticed that most unicorns in the show are only capable of doing the levitation spell, and they have to perform a great effort to move something big (like Rarity in the finale) so, do you guys think most unicorn are capable of the most basic spells? There's only 4 unicorns in the show that were shown capable of doing more, Twilight, Starlight, Trixie and Sweetie Belle

Most unicorns are indeed capable only of levitation and whatever is relevant to their talent (like extra dexterous levitation for Rarity, who has to work with needles, threads and other tiny things), viewer's perception of unicorn abilities is kinda skewed cuz a lot of prominent unicorns, including the main character, have Magic as their talent and can do whatever. Much like most Pegasi aren't Wonderbolt level flyers, most unicorns aren't wizards.

That's exactly right.

Besides when it comes tomost of the secondary even background unicorns we don't even see if they have any professional jobs or whatever that require magic beyond the basic levitation spell so there's no point in showing it 

If the exact reason why when Starlight glimmer took away the ponies cutie mark and replaced them with equal signs the Pegasi still technically keep their flight and the Unicorns keep their most basic levitation spell that every unicorn can do. but when it came to the Mane six it took away some part of them then is uniquely theirs. Applejack's ability to understand animals, Rainbow Dash being the fastest Pegasus flyer, Pinkie pie's enthusiasm that is greater than any other, Rarity's sense of what's fashionable or not, Applejack's "country-sisms" and Twilight magic with reduced to the most basic spell that every unicorn can do which is why they had to rely on the other ponies of the village to stop Starlight glimmer until they can get their cutie marks and their magic back.

Question though: Can they levitate themselves? Moving objects are trivial, but if they can make themselves fly, they can visit Cloudsdale any time they want to.

Sunburst is a great example of how one can advance their magic through practice and study, but it only goes so far.

That being said, I think the entire race would benefit by applying themselves more.

Self-levitation is a characteristic of a very powerful unicorn.

We haven seen this ponies do it:

-Twilight

-Starlight

-Trixie

-Twilight's mom

-Snails, for some reason.
