How come the Elements of Harmony doesn’t work on King Sombra?

In The Beginning of the End, when The Mane Six use the Elements of Harmony on King Sombra to save the Crystal Empire, it is shown at the end of Part 1 he faked his defeat and then destroyed the Tree and Elements of Harmony, the Elements works on every Villain except for Sombra, How come they don’t work on Sombra?

because he avoided them somehow, I think. Shadowy guy like that might have ways to avoid real friendship  when they confronted him the second time, they were ready for it and stopped him vampiring away

I think he just teleported away before the blast could destroy him.
