Octavia's Hall Critics

I'll try make my posts over there better, but I don't really have the patience to do critiques for many works over there, so I won't be joining the critic team.

I clicked on the link, but it takes me to a blank page in the forum. I would like to apply, very much so.

And critiquing is a skill, which I am glad you're recognizing. Offering an opinion helps, but the act of actively critiquing a piece is something that takes practice and, in some cases, training. I think that I can bring that to the table.

The problem I see with this is that second you make something official, people want in. People like being part of something official, it gives a sense of power. Now I'm not saying that everyone who applies is doing it simply so they can be official, but we will undoubtedly get people who will. Also, official critics will probably be seen as being above non-official critics, simply because they are official. Also also, some official critics would likely see themselves as being above non-official critics for the same reason.

As the old saying goes, those who try to gain a position of power probably shouldn't be allowed to.

To summarize, making an official critic team will probably create more problems then just saying "hey, you should all go critique more instead of just saying 'nice art, bro' and leaving it at that." and stickying it in octavia's hall.

Those are all valid points, but I would wait for the details to be revealed before speculating!

I love you! <3

I don't think someone who doesn't want to lead would make a very good leader. I've heard that saying before ever xD/

making an official qualified critic team probably won't cause any problems. If they let anybody do it then maybe you should be worried. I signed up because many people lash out at random critiques and it's annoying.

Just had to make a note- the opposite is also true. The one who tries to lead is also often a bad choice for the leadership position. It's the reason that people who ask for X position rarely get it.

We will have to wait and see. :S But as previously mentioned, there's the sense of elitism. After all, if all you want to do is critique, why not just go and critique? It's not like you need to apply before you can start. :P

Now whose fault is that? Some people would rather not have their work critiqued, and their requests should be respected. Others would prefer (or not) to only be praised on their art. If the artist doesn't ask for critiques, there's a chance that it might be for a reason.

Was bored, so I put this here. Don't kill me pls :(

There might be a sense of elitism, but that would be due to bad selection on the mod who runs it's fault. and the last parts can be answered with the same answer. I've been on many websites where they ask for it and still get mad. Having an official group would decrease this because it often turns into a flame war. Even people who ask for critiques often times can't handle them. It's usually the people that ask for harsh critiquing that can't take it because they think their art is pretty good as is. If they didn't think it was good then they would just ask for critiques because they would think that finding a problem wouldn't be hard.

I would also like to note that whether the person want's to lead or not does not indicate their ability. George Washington, arguable the US's best president, want to lead and then after a few terms decided not to lead.

Just because you apply to be a critic doesn't automatically make you a person on an epic quest for power.

The job of a critic is something I have ALWAYS went for.

I'm making a blog one day just to live my dream.

Helping out ponies here could really help with others, and myself.

Not a quest for power ;-;

Well, that is their fault then. They should stomach it if they ask for it. :P But that's not the majority-those that ask for critiques usually know what they're getting into. Or at least, common sense should tell them that. :

I would also like to note that whether the person want's to lead or not does not indicate their ability. George Washington, arguable the US's best president, want to lead and then after a few terms decided not to lead.

He also had support from a HUGE majority of the United States. He was the only real candidate at the time, and he knew it. What would you do in that situation if everyone wanted you in office? :P

You ish a very helpful person. :3

But you already are a helpful critic, and my comment is not directed at you. Or actually, at anyone, for that matter. *waves at everyone*

~~~
But anyways, I'm not against it-just pointing out(or more like repeating what's been previously mentioned) the flaws in the system. After all, I'll just quote myself on what I said previously: "If all you want to do is critique, why not just go and critique? It's not like you need to apply before you can start." Being accepted as an "official critic" doesn't help your job in any way, at least from what I can see.
I've never heard of that saying, but alas I like it.
And back to the topic, I doubt this will cause elitism. And Aureity brings up a good point, we don't really need to sign up to be a critic.
48+ hours now ... any updates?
Right now we're mostly just gathering applications, seeing how much interest there is, who is interested, and all that sort of thing. We don't presently have a specific timetable as to when we're going to start rolling it out or implementing anything.
As mentioned, we're looking at this primarily as an experiment - at present there is rarely anything that could be considered meaningful feedback on works posted in Octavia's Hall; we're interested in seeing if making such a thing an official 'job' of sorts might encourage such activity - especially since a number of people have approached us asking if there's anything they can do to help out around here.
If things work out? Awesome! If not? We can throw the idea into the fireplace, right next to the gallery and IP.Chat, and head on back to the drawing board.
Auriety brings up a good point. One can critique without being an official critic. Feld0 has stated that official critics wont get any perks.
From what I can see, the only logical reason to want to be an official critic is for the title. And whether you like it or not, any title that is not inherently negative does carry power.
I would fill out an application but, I'm not good at those kind of things. So I gave up.
I'll just critique things without the official position. (I can still do that, right?)
Yeah, anyone is allowed to critique.
As far as I understand it, the program was suggested to offer artists a more structured and dependable system to get feedback on their work.
Well, it has been eleven days.
Another project that has died ...
or staff simply whispering about in the shadows?
(aka, an official update would be great please)
Well, I waited an hour to post here, in case they were just taking a while. I agree. An official update would be nice on whether or not it's a classified topic, or it's dead in the water.
