On steam, there is a free multiplayer game called Blacklight: Retribution. Its a FPS. Its kinda similar to BF3, I guess.

World of Warcraft is free up to level 20, choose the horde, um well you like first person shooters, most people who like games like that don't really like games that require skill,

Hmmmmm, I could recommend you Runescape, but I don't like it ...

Games I have heard are good are rusty hearts and Maplestory

People who like first person shooters don't like games that require skill? Or were you referring to world of warcraft?

While I dislike the vast majority of first person shooters, I'd have to say that implying that they require no degree of skill is a bit of an overly broad and rather inaccurate blanket statement.

Yeah, for example, Unreal Tournament back in the day required some serious skill to play online. For those familiar with the game, it was golden to see a 360 degree shock combo in midair on certain maps with high elevations (requiring lots of jumping and dodging), but from what I've seen nowadays (people still play it... even after 13 years since its release), it's not uncommon to see that move performed.

That or people just like making crazy maps on that game which help out their cause.

Most free shooting games are divided. There is usually a vast amount of people that play for fun and casually and aren't particularly good. It's when you start getting into the competitive scene that shooting games start requiring a lot of skill. ALL shooting games that I have played have these separate communities. Thus, each FPS game requires skill.

Just my opinion here, but if I were you, I'd steer clear of Maplestory. Maplestory is what happens when you take an interesting premise, then strip away everything but the grind and the cash shop.

Team Fortress 2 is free-to-play, and is also a shooter. It used to be retail, but then it went "free to play". It's a pretty good game, with a huge playerbase, and it still gets updated regularly. I'd recommend checking it out if you don't play it yet. There's a thread for it here, that happens to be mine in fact. :P

For non-shooters, I guess I'd recommend Atlantica Online or Mabinogi, which is alright but not everypony's cup of tea. I haven't played Vindictus, but I'm always told it's good. Otherwise, I guess you could check out the "Free to play" games listed on Steam, which Atlantica Online and Vindictus happen to be now. Might find something interesting there.

That and Runescape. I tried out Maplestory once; got bored after a week.

Some people actually enjoy the grind, like me.

Grew up playing games that required grind, so Maple is amazing to me.

Played it for 6 years now.

I grew up on games that required grind. Classic JRPGs and ARPGS where you had to grind to gain levels, train skills, weapon and spell proficiencies, etc. Know what made it all worth it?

The story. The adventure. The characters. The end.

Maplestory, despite having "Maple" and "Story" in the name, barely has any of either. The "goals" flipflop from killing a snail to finding a couple tires, and there's really no sense of adventure. The characters lack characterization, and the engrish text makes it very hard to get involved in their stories. And there is no "end" really. There is no moment where you defeat the big bad guy, epic music plays, events play out and the credits roll. There's just... more grind. More of the same, really.

Maplestory lacks any real "goals" for grinding. Sure, you kill a few hundred thousand mushrooms with :3 faces, gain a couple levels, and get to get another group of skills, but then what? Now you get to kill a million black blobs driving trucks around. Since Maplestory's "story" is a disjointed, disoriented mess, its community infamous for being mostly immature, its gameplay is minimal, there's little in the means of motivation to grind. The game just leaves you feeling empty after you play it.

tl;dr any game with grind needs to have motivation for said grinding. Maplestory is 99.9% grind with 0.01% motivation peppered in. And that's why I hate it. Everypony is entitled to their opinion, of course, but I'm serious when I say I'm baffled to see somepony defending the game.

Back to the subject at hand: Another good game that I forgot to list when I posted earlier is Alien Swarm. It's free, and a decent game, though I haven't got a clue if anypony plays it anymore. Either way, it's free.

Oh I totally forgot that, yeah that requires a good load of skill :)

I hear Bloons Tower Defense 5 is pretty awesome.

Also, there's a SAS Zombie Assault Tower Defense by the same people.

Or you could go pirate Skyrim or something.

I remember SAS zombie assault 2, I think it was called, super fun when I was 8, I sorta grew out of it

You can't go wrong with TF2, the game is relatively fast paced, tons of weapons and great maps. There's a class type for any situation and most importantly it's balanced...imo.

I would recommend Combat Arms, but that game doesn't take too kindly to skilled players. What I mean is that you can be really good then be called a hacker for it or end up being the victim of actual hackers. I'm not sure how the CA community is now, but if you can get past all that it's not a bad game overall. Also it has the zombie factor you're looking for.

There's also Alliance of Valiant Arms, it's also well balanced with great weapons and classes. My only gripe from A.V.A has to be the weapon & armor deterioration that happens when you use the weapons and from taking damage. It's not really all that bad however money can be tight if you're not exactly the best shot.

You have to go to the wogl rooms or find a clan and scrim.

As for TF2, well it's the devil. All it has is balancing and it's one of the slower games I've played lol.

To tell the truth, I haven't played TF2 lately so you're probably right about it being slow. I never could keep up with the pc shooter community.

As for Combat Arms, I'm not too familiar with wogl rooms then again I haven't played it in the past 5 years. Might think of showing up again...I know this is off topic but how bad is the hacking in open rooms?

Okay back on topic, might I also suggest Blacklight: Retribution and S4 League. Not sure how Blacklight is, but the weapon customization is intriguing. Played S4 for awhile, I liked the anime style characters (if that's to your taste) and it lets you choose between being melee focused or gunning from afar.
