Has anybody here read the Necronomicon? I'm currently reading it at the moment, its a fascinating read! :D

It is a collection of H.P Lovecraft's best works, most famously the tales of the old gods, most famous of which is Cthulhu. Its worshiped by some cults because they believe that Lovecraft was a spirit median (could talk to ghosts) and that the every story he wrote was true.

I haven't read that, but I did read "The Complete Works of H.P. Lovecraft". Unfortunately, I got bored almost halfway through. No offense Lovecraft, but the writing style of the 20's and 30's are hard to bare.

I don't have the Necronomicon per say, but I have a complete collection of his work as an e-book. It was a pretty darn good deal, you can find it on amazon, but I don't get a hard cover awesome book like that though ;) .

Agreed, sacrificing a lamb at a cult meeting is not the same without holding a physical copy of the book!...

Wait, what i mean to say is, I've always preferred to read a physical book rather than an e-book, swiping a finger on a screen or clicking just does not quite compare to the physical texture of turning a page :)

His writing can be a little hard to get through, but perseverance rewards you with dangerously vivid and amazing storys that can move your soul or scare you witless.

I have read some Lovecraft, like The Call of Cthulhu and At the Mountains of Madness. They aren't really that exciting.. I read them because I wanted to, so it's not like it was some school assignment. It just kind of felt as if you had to sludge through a lot of it for the interesting parts.

I can't say that I have, but anything by H.P. Lovecraft is worth the read for me. I have a book by C.J. Henderson called "The Occult Detectives". Very Lovecraft influenced. Does the guy some justice. I've also seen a graphic novelization of the Call of Cthulhu somewhere.

But I digress. I'm a sucker for hard-bound books, so I may end up purchasing this book!

H.P. Lovecraft's stories are great and terrifying. "The Cats of Ulthar" made me give suspicious looks for a long time, "Ex Oblivione" has the absolutely beautiful line "native infinity of crystal of crystal oblivion", "The Festival" felt darkly disturbing and unsettling the whole time, "Sweet Ermengarde" is suprisingly hilarious for Lovecraft, and I could go on and on. What I like about Lovecraft's horror, though, is how he doesn't reveal the horror all at once. He pulls you along, drops hints here and there, and creates a perfect eerie, tense mood before revealing the horror in a single, monstrous event. Lovecraft also creates enough doubt in your mind that you're never sure if what's happening is a dream or real life. Not enough horror stories do this anymore; it seems like it's all about gore and getting immediate scares. I'd like to see/ read more subtle horror be put out. "At the Mountains of Madness", actually, was VERY close to being made into a movie that would have been directed by Del Toro. It was scrapped, however, since Del Toro would negotiate below an R rating.

Anyway, Another thing I like about Lovecraft is how he influenced Stephen King, another favorite author of mine, and was influenced by Edgar Allen Poe. It's so cool to see how great authors influence each other, like they're passing a torch along through history.

As for the Necromicon collection, in my opinion, it's pretty cool. I prefer the complete collection, though, since it has all of his work. I don't think "Sweet Ermengarde" is included in the Necronomicon, but it's very enjoyable. It's not like Lovecraft at all, but that's part of what makes it so much fun.

Half of what I say is meaningless, but I say it so that the other half may reach you.

I read it, all of it and ..... loved it.

horror is my favorite category for everything so this book was awsome for me.

I was never really into horror books but after finding that no horror movie (so far) scares me, I decided to give it a go, there's something about the way he writes that just sends a chill down your spine isn't there? :D

And the way some of his stories are written, like Dagon, it does make you think if the cults have it right and there's some truth to the spirit median thing :P

I haven't read THAT edition of Lovecraft's works, but I do own like four different compilations of his work. Ever since Eternal Darkness I became a huge fan of his stuff, and he just hooked me with his stuff. I do understand how not everyone can get into them though, he does have a VERY winding narrative style, like how he went on for a page and a half in At The Mountains of Madness just to tell you it was a cold wind in Antarctica.

But DAMN did I feel chilly after reading it, I'm a real sucker for long descriptive stuff like Lovecraft and Shelley tend to do. But, like I said, not for everyone, which is cool :3

Same here, but I got the hardcover. I loved his writing, and I read the Horror in Clay a million times over. It was great.

I find the writing style of the 20s and 30s intriguing, and quite strange just seeing how different it was back then.

I should look into it at least, I hear H.P. Lovecraft is a great author.

Of course, when I read the topic title the first thing I thought of was Army of Darkness. Damn you and your boomstick, Clint Eastwood.
