I usually play just for fun, but at the moment I am playing for another reason - to improve mein Deutsch ^^. I'm playing Spyro games in german now and I hope I'll get better results at school. :D

I play all games for fun, the skill part comes with it in certain games. I find that I'll get quite competitive in some games such as Starcraft 2 and League of Legends where being good at the game does generate more enjoyment.

Mostly I'll play open world games for fooling around in where you can just do what you want and although its not entirely open world Dishonoured is a fantastic game to do silly things in (mainly throwing guards and random party guests into a river).

I play games to have a blast :)

Skills come naturally while playing the game, and if you're having fun, the learning doesn't take as long.

Gotta think positive and not be too serious about it :)

Now that I have Portal 2 I am starting to add a little bit of skill to my gaming, I still tend to do other games just for the hay of it though

I also am really wanting to learn how to NOT be a noob on CoD

Right at this point, I have no idea what I'm doing :/

I would say both, also it really depends on what game i'm playing. Who said you can't have both aspects? Having skill in a certain game often means you're able to overcome challenges easier which in turn will make your game session successful in one way. Improving is always fun, i don't think anyone can deny that. :)

Whatever it's CoD, DotA 2, Mario, Zelda, etc, there's always some degree of skill. Master a game is a part of your own progression as well.

Depends on the game.

If it's a competitive game like League of Legends,UMvC3,or an online shooter, then yeah,I play more for skill than fun since most of the fun in competitive games is having high skills and facerolling the enemy team. Not gonna have much fun if I'm doing horrible in a game like that.

Other than that,I play mostly for fun.For MMOs,I usually play if the community is awesome and chill, which is most of the fun for me in MMOs.Single-player games,it's all about how much fun I can possibly have since nobody else can tell me how to play the game.If I wanna play Deus Ex and place all the bodies infront of the enemy and freak them out, then hell yeah I'm gonna do that.

I game for both. Usually just for fun, but the most fun I tend t have with a game is when it is quite difficult, and I manage to overcome a certain part after many failed attempts. Which is why I've been playing Dark Souls a lot. It's fun to get better at the game.

I'd say I'd need both for me to actually have fun at it... Multiplayer gaming especially can be really competitive, but at the moment I lie where there are trolls behind the microphone, just having fun in the game rather than taking it really seriously like most people.

Mainly game for fun, usually just messing about with friends, that and I've only really been playing co-op games just a lately.

Although I do like to try and get better at Scout / Sniper in TF2, so I'm a mix between the two.

Someone once said "No-one ever says 'It's just a game' when they are winning."

Now with the insightful quote out the way, I play for fun. That is what video games were made for: to entertain. Then again, entertain has many other interpretations.

I never play JUST for skill. I do play for fun and skill at the same time. I love to challenge myself, but I dot put it in the way of having fun, otherwise gaming becomes a chore; I just did my chores!!!

At the end of the day, I play with my friends and have a laugh with them, but there are many times that we are competing to win. However, we never let it get in the way of our fun :)

Strangers think I am quiet. Friends think I am outgoing. Best friends KNOW I am insane!

Both, really! I can play a game and be a tad competitive (Not as far as rager, I'm not one to rage.  Pretty immature.) but in that I play to win.  Usually though, I'm rather laid back in most when it comes to video games.  More of a casual player.  It takes a pretty big game for me to get into and play it for 'skill'. xD

So, I suppose I'd say overall, I'd play for fun.  It's the best way to go in the end!

depends on the game i'm playing.  i would say mostly for skill, because layton games you kind of have to be skillfull or otherwise you won't be able to solve puzzles.  and pokemon,  when i play i play  to work on my competitive battling skills.  even if i'm not actually in a tournament.  i still play to work  on my skills. i learn things here and there  and work on movesets.

I don't need to INCREASE my skill, but I usually prefer to just barely succeed than to do everything perfectly. I also absolutely refuse to put significant effort into anything required to increase skill other than just playing the game. If the game isn't challenging it gets boring pretty quickly, but I also prefer a difficulty curve where you naturally get better without ever reaching a point that you have to struggle and practice over and over to get even barely succeeding.

I'm in school, trying to be more outgoing for once in my life, and trying to develop some musical talent. No time or energy to play games except for fun. Nothing against people who are more invested in it, though, unless they have a stick up their butt about how "accomplished" they are.
