Requesting help from vector artists.

Recently I've been thinking about trying my hand at vector art, and well... I have no clue as to what I'm doing. Tutorial videos don't seem to help me at all, and anything related to it makes my head explode, or makes me feel like I'm going to burst into tears. :(

I'm in desperate for help, from anyone who could help me. Basically, I need to start with baby steps. And even there I'm having trouble, so I would appreciate as much help as I can get. :)

@,

I could help you. I'm pretty good at vector art I guess. I've made the Pinkie Pie vector I have a link to in my signature and also my oc (which I also have a link to in my siggy if you wanna check out examples of vector art I've made)

I don't really know how I would be able to help you though, I mean if I should livestream what I'm donig or if you want it explained with text and pictures or something. Do you have Skype? I could add you.

@, I sent you a friend request. Accept it when you're able to go on skype :)

Oh also, when replying to other ponies' comments, be sure to press the "quote" button. You can also select a piece of a comment and then press the "@Mention" button. That way I would get a notification so I know if you have replied to me.

Will do. Oh, but I won't be available to skype until later tonight. I'm just now getting ready to go to bed.

Definitely can't wait to try my hand at this again. ^^ Is Photoshop a good program to use for this stuff?

@, Well since I don't know when "later tonight" is for you I'm not sure if I can be on skype then because of time zones. It's 5:14 pm here right now.

Photoshop is good for pretty much everything but when it comes to vectoring I highly recommend Inkscape. It's free and has much greater quality than photoshop. I always use Inkscape for vectoring. You don't even have to "try your hand". The way Inkscape works is different from other programs.

I see. Is Inkscape available for Mac? I don't use a Windows computer, so I usually check first. If not, will Photoshop do?

Edit: Right now it's 11:24 AM. So I'll probably be getting up around... 6-7 PM?

@,

Yes it is. You can download Inkscape for mac here: http://sourceforge.n...RD.dmg/download

Atleast I think that is the correct mac download.. Haha.

I don't know if the program is any different from the windows verision though.

Brohoof! :3

Thanks for the download link, I'll be sure to check it out when I wake up. ^^

And you said this is different from others? Can't wait to check it out!

Yeah. You don't really draw the vectors yourself. You put down nodes and then combine them with curves. If you wanted to actually draw the things yourself with your mouse or tablet, this isn't the program for you.

All right, well I'll check it out whenever I'm awake. Looks slightly less complicated than Photoshop, that's for sure. :P

Well, good night. ^^

I think I'll just work with this whenever it may come, but for now I'm going to stick to drawing on paper. I feel like I've already created too many topics, so what should I do? Just create a new topic, or is there a way to edit the title of this one? Perhaps I should search around, since I just need to find a guide on drawing ponies from the front.

I do allot of vectoring in photoshop and it is actually not that hard. (http://austiniousi.deviantart.com), and my number 1 tip it CONTROL KEY (or command on mac) CONTROL KEY CONTROL KEY CONTROL KEY. When moving anchor points... HOLD CONTROL KEY. when moving control points HOLD CONTROL KEY. Control key = Smooth

Its really a process of going to the pen tool, clicking where you want to start, clicking where you want to end and then adding as many midway points as needed, twist and adjust as needed with the control key held down, then go back round a bit in (for thickness of stroke), close path and make whatever color you want, then just go make a shape that vaguely fits under the stroke for the fill, the rest is history

That's all well and good, but I don't know if I'l be doing a lot of vectoring. At least not any time soon.

Though I do appreciate your advice. Got any tips for drawing ponies from the front, by the way? I'm trying to draw a new pony I've come up with, and I'm really struggling with it.

I just don't know how to draw from any other angle than the side.

Even then I don't draw very well. XD

You know on Deviantart there's a place called MLP vectorclub, they specialize in making pony vectors, and they have some pretty sweet tutorials. http://mlp-vectorclu...rt.com/gallery/

By the way, what program do you use?

Perhaps I should've started a different topic. I had one thing in mind, then realized that I was going to do something completely different. I'm just going to stick to drawing on paper for now... sorry. ._.;

well first you need the right software (don't use photoshop for vectors)

I would suggest adobe illustrator

or if you want free... Inkscape

that is the first step to making your vectors.

Why not? Photoshop is fantastic for vectors, and in my opinion better then illustrator. Photoshops pen tool is really intuitive and very easy once you get used to it, and that doesn't take long

because that is what illustrator was designed for was drawing, over photoshop's all around feel... illustrator has shortcuts and functions in tools that would take photoshop 3+ steps to do, that is why illustrator is MY personal choice over photoshop, but don't get me wrong, i do everyone's OC's in photoshop just because i pump them out faster, but they aren't as good as they are in illustrator.

If you like Photoshop that is fine...

just saying you have much more control in illustrator once you get it down.

Edit: btw you can export photoshop work that isn't vectorized into illustrator and it will convert it to vector for you, thus another reason to love it, it cuts down on the steps...

Considering I have been using Adobe Ideas on my iPad, and completely fail at drawing almost anything on the computer, I don't think I can help much. But, good luck, and don't give up!

Finland is my favorite. All the other Hetalia characters can go now.
