I'm using a Commodore 64. I modded it to run Google Chrome, ROBLOX and Steam. Works perfectly fine.

Okay, Jokes aside, I'm using Windows 8. I'd prefer Windows 7, but Win8 works fine for the games I play.

I'm on windows 7 and I don't think I'm ever switching to 8. I'm used to XP (been using it since before I was in school.) and I'm still getting used to 7.

Hello! Gabe Newell here!

Am curious how this works?  How does one enable the Registry Hack to cover Windows XP to 2019?  Can you provide a step by step guide?

it's very simple...

Just create a text file in XP and paste this code

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\WPA\PosReady]

"Installed"=dword:00000001

after that, save it as a .reg file (instead of .txt) and click on it.

It'll add the entry to the registry and you should begin to receive your updates.

Basically what it does, is makes your computer appear to be running "Windows POS 2009"

which is a version of Windows XP released for POS systems in banks, stores, and businesses.

Words of advice though,

firstly, you MUST be running XP 32 bit for this to work, 64 bit has a way around it as well, but you should probably just go with 32. (If you can)

secondly, as it has always been, the updates are not enough, regardless of them or not, you need to make sure you have a good antivirus

and are careful what you click on/put in your computer. There are some crazy viruses out there, and simple updates won't always help you, even if

they're current. But that goes for any computer, not just XP.

and lastly, above all, enjoy your usage! I love XP more than any other, and imo it's truly microsoft's best work, and I wish you success in using it! :)

Windows 7 Ultimate. Linux in any form, however, will always be better. We just need to harass programmers into making things Linux compatible first...

I'm using Windows 8.1.

It sucks. It sucks a lot.

I feel you. I feel you very much. I'd also like to point out that the start overlay is persistent and takes up tons of resources (that might not be helping, sorry)

I dont think im gonna go for an 8, its too different, Windows 7 is a legacy system, barely changed from Windows 3.0. I grew up with them starting with a 95.

Windows 8, is a completely different system altogether, and probably not compatible with the older stuff.

If i do upgrade, i was thinking of getting the newest linux Mint, its a lot like my 7.

Actually, Windows 8 uses less RAM than Windows 7. At first it used more RAM, but Microsoft did some things and now it uses less.

I have Windows 8.1 and games and other applications from 1998 - 2002 work just fine. I've tried plenty and they ran as expected.

That'd be the 8.1 then. But windows does hold up too much memory it isn't using, which Linux doesn't. Get Linux = be happy.

I'd rather use my 16GB RAM, thanks xP

Linux supports much, much more than 16GB of RAM, depending on version.

So does 64-bit Windows. If I wanted to (and my motherboard could handle it, max is 32GB) I could install 512GB RAM.

I don't know what to do with 10 gigs of my RAM. I typically only use 4 - 6 of it and would rather see it be used. I didn't install 16GB RAM for no reason.

Guess you're not into those kind of games...

Kerbal Space Program is a RAM hog, is it not?

Older games, Steam's Early Acess, online multiplayers like DotA 2, etc.

Oh. I do have older games, a few Early Access games and online multiplayer games. They don't use more than 2 - 3GB RAM. Except Kerbal Space Program, because I have quite a few mods installed.

If you're trying to get me to switch to Linux, please don't. I've used it before and considered making it my main OS, but it's lacking a lot of things I need to get by and it's way too easy to accidentally fuck everything up. Don't really see it as entirely "worth it" yet.

Oh, now we're completely off the whole Linux thing. I've got no idea where we are now.

The RAM limit on 64-bit Linux is 128TB. (That is, 256 times higher.)

Except for very specialised purposes, you're unlikely to get much benefit once you start going above 16 GB though. Very few applications call for that much RAM.
