gaming Spyro the Dragon

Captain Marvelous

Recommended Posts

Well... since we had two threads of Spyro facing off against other character... I thought why not give the dragon his own threads

So here discuss anything to do with Spyro, the original playstation games, the ps2 sequels, the legend series and even Skylanders.

You may even talk about the movie that was cancelled awhile back.

Only rule... I'd rather this not turn into a Classic vs Legend vs Skylanders thread... but that's how these things end up

so enjoy

The original Spyro the Dragon for the PS1 was great fun to play. While it was nothing too difficult, most of the levels were pretty engaging, kept dialoge to a minimum, had good flow, and didn't assume you were incapable of figuring things out on your own.

The only level that really frustrated me as a kid was Tree Tops; I could never figure out how to reach that damn egg thief at the end of the level, or that dragon statue that was nestled out in the far corner of the level. Bloody super charge puzzles.

Can't say I've played many of the Spyro games... actually, I can say I haven't played 99% of them.

But Spyro for PS1 was pretty epic. There's just something about it that makes me nostalgia so hardcore.

All hail glorious strategy guides and GameFAQs lol. That's pretty much how I got to 100% for Spyro1

Favorite levels:

Glimmer (Ripto's Rage)

Colossus (Ripto's Rage)

Fracture Hills (Ripto's Rage)

Levels that can go screw off:

Tree Tops (Spyro 1) - same reason as Swoop

Zephyr (Ripto's Rage) - giant map is giant and orb challenges were annoying

Skelos Badlands (Ripto's Rage) - that damn egg orb challenge

Robotica Farms (Ripto's Rage) - stupid wasp/hornet things you needed to spit nuggets at to kill

I would include Spyro 1 and S:YotD levels if I could remember their names lol

The first three were the best. The rest just strayed from the path set before it.

But yeah, first three were awesome, but my favorite of them, believe it or not, was the first.

The mane reason is because there is no backtracking if you don't want it. You can complete a level the first time you go in it. And God I hate back tracking in video games, I prefer to get something as complete as possible and move on. And the first game did this perfectly.

Also, all the levels are amazing, enemies didn't respawn once you killed them(Well, until you left that world) And, IMO, the hardest levels were those flight ones. Tree Tops is the hardest regular level in the game, but still pretty easy.

Also, the graphics are still good to this day, and the voice acting is one of the rare examples of voice acting done right in a video game. And for some reason I can just keep replaying this game over and over again. I mean, I've just about memorized the location of everything. This is one of the best games I've ever played. Ever.

I remember as a kid I saw the trilogy available in a set and begged my Mom to buy it for me.

I had to get honor roll, but best honor roll I ever got.

But the game reminds me of why I hate discs, because now the disc is scratched up from use that it plays terribly. : (

But one thing that bugged me was the egg thefts. Why are they only in the first few worlds? After Magic Crafters they're gone for the rest of the game. Makes them feel like a late edition to it, which is a shame because it was fun to hunt them down.

It was also fun to see those chickens get electrocuted in Beast Keepers. remember?

"Awww, Look at the chicken... Thing. Hey, come back here you little-"

*Chicken dies from the electrocuted floor*

Mmmmm, Spyro. Haven't had the pleasure of checking out Skylanders yet nor A Hero's Tale. Makes me sad as a Spyro fan.

Still, to be blunt: I feel that all the Spyro eras are equal. I don't feel Legends are worse in any way, I just feel too many people let their nostalgia get the better of them. "Legend of Spyro isn't what I'm looking for in a Spyro game" or "it strays too far from the original formula!" is all I ever hear and I'm sick of people not judging the games on their own worth instead of wanting them to be games they are clearly not.

I haven't played Dawn of the Dragon yet, unfortunately. I wanna get the PS3 version but I dunno for sure yet cuz I want whichever one has the best performance and I know sometimes PS3 games have bad framerate issues when they are shared with other consoles that aren't as powerful like the PS2 and Wii. I still have to beat The Eternal Night on Wii though, it's gotten really tough near the end. Dx

I gotta say, even though Spyro in the original could fly at times it's nothing compared to the first time you fly in A New Beginning. That was a truly epic feeling and I just wish there were more flying levels in ANB and TEN. Glad to hear that there's free flying in DotD though, which is a great plus. xD

The original Spyro games had some very interesting and a lot of varied characters, which is a huge plus, but I've never really felt any of them held up to the epicness that the Legends series had going.

Plus melee to magical comboing is boss no matter where you are.

Also, I know you didn't want it to be a Originals vs Legends thing but it's hard to speak of my love for the series without bringing it up. Particularly because of the fact that everyone doesn't look at Legends as they are, they all see something that's not Spyro with the name "Spyro" on it and judge it accordingly but don't really judge the games on their own merits and it really frustrates me that everyone and their brother uses the same reasons: Because it's not the original Spyro they came to love. Well duh, it's not supposed to be. I feel it's high time people stop using "nostalgia goggles" (I hate using the term but this is the only instance where I can truly believe that people really are using them and refuse to take them off)

Like most other Spyro fans, I like the first three games a lot more than the rest of the series.

That's not nostalgia, it's not liking the direction a series has taken.

Sounds a hell of a lot like nostalgia to me when it's the only thing I ever hear about the games. I never hear "I don't like the story" or "I don't like the gameplay" it's always simply that it's not the original Spyro.

I'll be honest, I've only played/completed four games

Spyro 1, Ripto's rage, Eternal Night, Dawn of the Dragon

Comparing the first two... Ripto's rage is a whole lot better. Sure Spyro the Dragon may of been my very first Playstation game, but Ripto's rage was a whole lot better.

The other world's had their own story, their own problems, The back tracking was okay... but I find it funny, it seemed like the other worlds just got into trouble as soon as you save them. Also having permanent super fire breath is awesome, only thing that could make it better was that having super flight and charge.

and glitches galore... my favorite being the swim in air glitch

Year of the Dragon was one of my favourite games ever. Spyro 2 was also a great game, although I didn't play it that much. I still have my fingers crossed that there will be a remake of Year of the Dragon someday.

Error: Nostalgia overload.

I loved these games, but sadly no longer have any of them, and haven't played any for years.

Why has the urge to buy all the Spyro related games suddenly appeared?

Bleh, I found the ones after the trilogy boring. Hero's Tail made Gems near useless, the backtracking was terrible, and the world was boring compared to all the varied landscapes in the originals.

And enter the dragonfly...

FUUUUU-

And I found the Legend series mediocre at best. Plus, who got the bright idea of making a cartoony series dark? Seriously, it would be like if Sega gave Sonic guns.

Well, after looking a bit, it seems that the people that actually have played Skylanders, seem to really like it

My only problem with it, is that if you take Spyro out of it... it seems like it wouldn't even make any difference

The figurine aspect to the game is a pretty neat idea, especially if there are parts of the game where you need a specific character to get to the next part (such as for one part you might need a undead type of character, any other character would die instantly)... It's definitely the rpg game with the most playable characters (I think?)

If I was a collector of figurines, I think it would be neat to just collect them... from what images I've seen, they seem really well made, and detailed. Unlike the stuff I've seen from Bandai of America (sorry simple toku fan rant)

My opinion on the whole thing... their dragons, dragon's has a history of stories being from light to dark... so it wasn't anything new to me... and even then, The Legend series is tamed compared to other dark dragon stories

I enjoyed the story, despite not having played the first game... looking back on it, every time I see Cynder I can't help but think of Luna (Well more Past Sins)

My only problem with the original Spyro game was the replay-ability of it... as soon as you get 120% there really isn't anything left to do... at least for Ripto's rage, you can redo all the other world stories

Also, Sonic never had guns. XP

....

Honestly... I think if they combined the elements of all the games, they could really make a great Spyro game.

The action and story of The Legend series

The Decade different worlds, and free roam

and the multiple party of Skylanders...and don't forget about the collectibles

==============

I'll be honest... I use to think that FiM shipping was the weirdest shipping out there...

then I came across Spyro shipping

The story, atmosphere and action were the best part of the Legends series imo. While, like I said, the originals had a lot more varied characters it didn't exactly do a fantastic job on the epic story part since it was all cartoony. Now don't get me wrong, I like cartoony, but when I played the Legend of Spyro series it was truly epic and I wouldn't have had it any other way. Besides you get your comedy relief from Sparx. :P

As for Skylanders, I hear even though Spyro is in the name that it's not truly a Spyro game at all simply from the fact that it has no connection to any previous Spyro game, the game doesn't even focus on Spyro and you could beat the game without him entirely.

I Played the first Spyro for PS1 then later on PS2 i came across Eternal Knight thinking, they still make spyro games!?

After that i got a 360 & the first game i ever brought for it was The Legend of Spyro Dawn of The Dragon which is basicly the only Spyro game with Co-op ( You can play as Spyro or Cynder ) & Which kinda brung the series to an end. T'ill Skylanders which is a bootleg version of Power Stone but ppl say it's good none the less

  • 11 months later...

The series of my childhood. I loved the original trilogy and all the games before the 6th game I believe  It became too much of a fighter game with little to no platformer elements and terrible voice acting. Not saying I hate the newer games, I mean I am a hardcore fan of Spyro after all.

Thank God for emulators. :D

I really loved the first game. The rest, not as much. I was more into Crash Bandicoot honestly and I didn't like how Spyro 2 and onward had these missions and minigames all the time...I mostly just prefer solid platforming. But yeah, pretty good series, and it's horrible to see that it's pretty much dead, just like Crash is or Mega Man.
