I just don't understand...

Maybe someone here can explain this, but I really can't. Okay, first let me say that I am very active in the fandom. I love the fan art, music, and fiction (both reading and creating for the latter), and think everyone should give the show a chance.

Here's the thing though, I don't watch the show that much. It's weird, I know, but here's what I mean: I want to watch the show, but something always holds me back. I almost forget about enjoying the show and avoid it even. And it's not that I don't love the show, either, I do, and even watched a few episodes yesterday, and remembered why I love it and when I was done, was left with a smile on my face, something I don't have often.

But then here I am today, and it's almost like I've had amnesia, I remember watching the show and enjoying it, but something is holding me back.

I really don't understand this, and the thing is, I love both the show and the fandom, and, as previously stated, am very active in the latter, so why am I so hesitant to watch the show? Anyone have any ideas?

Well, what's holding you back? Is it your friends? Is it your family. What could it be? Or is it something mental or psychological?

My guess is that the fanon and canon of the show is causing your inner conflict. Sometimes I confuse show facts with facts that occured in a fanfiction or in a video. This could be something much deeper but I am no psychologist.

The mind of the host will desperately try to create memories where none exist. Simple right?

Well first of all just because your active in the fandom, doesn't mean you have to constantly watch the show, I mean I watch the show alot, but thats just me.

I know what you kinda mean though, I get the same sorta feeling about alot of things. Like practicing my trumpet, I'll be hesitant and held back by something that I'm unsure of what it is, but once I finally practice I enjoy it. Then after that day is over I get the repeat cycle.

Really you just kinda have to go for it, I mean I fixed the problem with my practicing from a routine, but obviously you don't have to watch routine MLP unless you want to. Just kinda force yourself, as long as you enjoy it you may just need a bit of a push, maybe the feeling will wear off after a while.

However if you don't wanna watch the show, you don't have to. Maybe you'll wanna watch it another day, or maybe you just don't wanna watch it for a while, or you wanna watch something else.

I'm sure not everyone watches episodes of the show every day.

Watch the show when you feel like you want to! if you know your going to enjoy it, just give yourself a little motivational push!

Maybe you have a certain ideal in your head that you're afraid will change if you watch the show too much, or watch it with the wrong mood or frame of mind. It's a sign of how much you love MLP:FiM. If there's something that's near and dear to our hearts, we don't binge in it, we partake in it responsibly . Especially if you have an emotional connection to the work, you want to only watch it in the right frame of mind so you get the right feelings when you watch it. That's how I was with James Cameron's Avatar (my favorite movie, for many reasons, including some on an emotional level), and how I am getting with MLP:FiM.

It's ritualistic, in a way.

Well, maybe your heart indicates that you don't want to watch it right then and then. It's not a bad thing. I mean, I for example don't force myself to watch episodes. I only watch them when I'm completely sure I want to. Maybe it's just a spur of the moment when you want to watch the episodes, or maybe even viceversa. You still love the show a lot, right? Then that's a good thing, because it means you can always go watch an episode an enjoy it. But maybe there are times where you want to, but it's not a completely total desire. I don't really know how to put it better though. Sorry.unsure.png

This is like me with my Wii and PS3. I really want to play it but something is holding me back which I can't figure out. I usually play when friends are over, but I never get time anymore since I sit watching MLP whenever I get the chance.

I don't rewatch episodes all that often, mainly because I've seen them all at least 4 times. Like what Arcanel said, I don't force myself to watch it when I don't feel like it. It's not a big deal. I still get psyched for new episodes and enjoy them.

Hmm... I never have this problem, but I can definitely see how somepony would. Maybe I just always get way too excited for new episodes :P

But if you're not feeling like watching the show, you don't have to. Maybe watch an episode tomorrow instead. Or you could even try to watch an episode a day if you feel like you should commit to that.

I myself am also a fan-fictioner. I have watched all of the episodes at least once, but not much more than that.

I would consider doing something like "Read 2 fanfics, watch 1 episode", or something along those lines.

Alternatively, you could view it as research for writing fics.

On a side note, what is your FIMFiction username, if you have one?

thats happened to me a few times, like i start watching an episode, than i turn it off.. I guess my mind is telling me not to over watch the show, so it doesn't lose it's awesomeness or whatever word you want to use..

It could be that in the back of your head, you might think that your friends or family might not like the idea of the show. You might also not have the time between school maybe to watch the show. It really could be anything, it just really depends on what going through your head, and if you want other people to know that you watch MLP.

Thanks for the advice, and my FiMfiction account is "blackopp1" (look familiar? Hey, I like to be fairly consistent).

Thanks to everyone else as well, the advice has been very well put.

Maybe it's because you feel as if you HAVE to watch them, when really you don't have time or you would rather be doing something else. If you want to watch them that's great and you should if you have time, but you shouldn't feel forced to.

Well, lots of people already know I'm a brony, many of my friends and my parents included. Unfortunately, nearly no one approves of it, so I think you may be right. I do really like the show though, and since I've still got a lot of Season 2 to watch and the new episodes being released, I just need to give myself a "motivational push" as someone else put it here, and do it, because I really do enjoy the show. Thanks again.

Whoa, you haven't finished season 2 yet? Some of the best episodes of all time are in the second half of it. Aren't you a Fluttershy fan? You NEED to watch Hurricane Fluttershy, it's one of the most heartwarming and awesome things I've ever seen. Watch it at your own pace of course, I just got excited.

If I remember correctly there is a conflict between you and your family regarding the show and fandom (sorry if I'm thinking of someone else), maybe it was your friends and you.... either way what I mean is because of that it might be cause you to avoid it. Subconsiously.

I agree most with this. I got this way for awhile, but it as just a phase I guess. I was more involved with the fandom and these forums than the show and I felt like I had to watch the show. But for me, that is no longer the case, I watch the show here and there once or twice every two days.

I think it may just be too much all at once. After I took a small break from the show I found a new appreciation for it that I didn’t previously have.

Let me just start with when I first saw this thread under the recently updated, it showed "I just don't understand... Flying Whales." That was awesome.

Anyways, you need to determine first whether or not it is something like your friends or family that denounce you for the show, or some psychological thing. If it is the former, maybe you need to talk with whoever. Tell them everything about what you do, let it all out and if they don't accept it, just let it go. They have opinions. If it's something psychological, well, just do some thinking about it. I don't know what's going on in your brain.

I guess just marathon a season or two, and force yourself to watch.  Though you really shouldn't feel forced to watch it.  I mean I know others who don't watch the show that much, and still are very active in the fandom.

Good memory, you're right on both accounts. Yeah, my parents and friends both hate me being involved in the fandom (heck the fact that I go on these forums is still a secret, and probably will remain that way), minus maybe two exceptions in the latter. I think it is something subconscious too, after discussing it with someone else (not a trained professional or anything like that), that's what was determined. I just don't know why it would bother me, nothing like this ever really cuts deep, for lack of better terminology.

Thats a first usually my memory is terrible, but for some reason you stuck in my head.

I think its because in a weird way mlp and the fandom gets under your skin, or maybe a certain type of person is attracted to it. I'm not saying it changes you or anything the like but it does influence. There are so many people that have said that the show and the fandom have helped them improve themselves on a personal level.

When people dislike the show and fandom that are close to you it ends up feeling like they dislike you and the changes your going through... thats my own theory and I'll admit it needs more work.
