My second favorite episode vs my favorite episode. How nice. 

 

Magic Duel was amazing. It was funny, had great continuity and showed off some great stuff visually. I think it kind of helped that I used to dislike Trixie, so I had little to no expectations for it. I like her now. 

 

Sleepless in Ponyville however was the defining moment of the show so far for me however. So many great little moments and overall, the episode had so many feels. Again, some amazing visual stuff as well. I was smiling throughout the whole episode. This episode made me love Rainbow Dash as a character and made Scootaloo my favorite CMC.

 

So, yeah, Sleepless in Ponyville for me.

Sleepless in Ponyville. Magic Duel has the dubious honor of being the only mediocre episode in Season 3 to me, and I'd hate for it to lose to an amazing episode with the best episode ending ever.

WTF?  My vote goes for Sleepless in Ponyville, obviously.  This is clearly a much more important if not all around superior episode. 

 

This is my first time voting in this.  I could've voted in the last one too which pitted Hurricane Fluttershy against another episode.  That was so lopsided I forgot what the other choice was.

Apparently, judging by the votes, this was not a mismatch, although in my head it is. I think the worst mismatch has to go to Sonic Rainboom vs The Ticket Master. There was absolutely no way for The Ticket Master to win there. There were some good matches though:

Both defied my expectations, though in different ways. Magic Duel was far worse than I imagined; I thought Trixie might have undergone some character development between episodes but no, she's the same old bitchy showmare right up til the end, where she spews a very forced apology to avoid getting trashed. The lesson of the episode (to me at least) seemed to be "It's good to cheat and deceive people if it's for the right reason."

 

Howevr, Sleepless in Ponyville was much better than I imagined; I really like Luna's appearance, I got a better sense of Scootaloo as a character (I didn't really pay attention to her before this episode if I'm honest) and the lesson was good too: "It's okay to be afraid; you don't have to be fearless to be a good/cool person."

Have you ever seen something in a cartoon where a robot gets asked an unanswerable question and its head explodes? That's what I'm going to look like when that poll comes up. Ugh. My two favorite ponies too... I'll probably vote for Sonic Rainboom eventually for unbiased reasons not related to the best pony (shifts eyes) but that's going to hurt.

What the... Sleepless In Ponyville is losing? That is only acceptable if it is going against Hurricane Fluttershy. And, pardon me, but Magic Duel is no Hurricane Fluttershy. And losing by so much, too...

 

It can't be rabid Trixie Fans, because Boast Busters lost to Winter Wrap Up. What exactly is it that people see in Magic Duel? I would like to know, as maybe I could appreciate the episode more if I did.

Sorry, Sleepless in Ponyville takes the cake. Dash got a ton of character development, it was Scootaloo's first episode, Scootalove became canon (which effectively added to Dash's mentioned character development), and the episode was a brilliant start off for our new show writer, Corey Powell.

 

Magic Duel was cool, and I like how Trixie came back as an actual legitimate threat, but it does not beat out SiP.

I want more stuff from that guy. Corey Powell is showing great promise as an episode writer. Plus, it had Luna in it. Luna is great. I love Luna.

Sleepless in Ponyville was an excellent episode. Great story. Great characterization. Great humor. Great character development for both Scootaloo and Rainbow Dash. It did so much right, and Luna's inclusion was very well-done.

 

But Magic Duel is better, but just by a hair. Mind corrupted from anger, Trixie returned ready to kick some plot. The characterization of evil!Trixie was delicious, and she had some great expressions and lines (her not trusting wheels was classic!). Spike has been getting more and more involvement this season, and he kept everypony composed. The Star Wars-like tandem between Twilight and Zecora blended in extremely naturally, and Twilight's character grew a lot, particularly in taking her limitations and intelligence to her advantage. And it all wrapped together beautifully with Trixie regaining her conscience and scampering off (only to trip and resume running again, a reference to the saying of "getting back to your feet [and keep trying]").

Jeez, judging by the way things are running in this thread, you'd think that the AFC Championship game is being played out...

 

But I would go with Magic Duel. While the Scootalove and the addition of Luna in Sleepless in Ponyville is pretty rich, bronies would enjoy the fanservice put into Magic Duel without making it appear to be something out of a fanfiction. The references of The Dark Knight Rises and Star Wars Episode V were fantastic and executed nicely, plus the whole vibe of the episode gives you a sense that this is much more than just a little kid's show. I also think that a battle between Trixie and Twilight has been much sought out after all those months of waiting.

WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE who are voting for Magic Duel over Sleepless in Ponyville?!?!   I have yet to see even ONE of these voters attempt to justify their decision in this thread. EDIT: Wait, there are two of them. And they're both members I like and respect, so I'll try not to eat them. But as for the others...

 

They did SEE both episodes, right? This isn't some evil prank by SuperUltimateBrony? There wasn't some sort of mixup where Sleepless ran as Mare Do Well in some areas? I am totally at a loss here. Someone please explain to me what went so horribly wrong with this poll.

Sleepless in Ponyville. I'd always been a big Rainbow Dash fan, but I'd beforehand seen Scootaloo as a flat character - a wannabe Rainbow Dash who tried to copy everything the latter did except that she could never pull off Rainbow's badass attitude. And truth be told, I felt as though I was kind of correct, but with Scootaloo's extreme fear of rejection by her idol, I began warming towards her. 

 

Rainbow Dash was portrayed perfectly - she's always been a jerk with a heart of gold, but often, due to her brashness and general lack of empathy, her heart of gold side is easily overlooked. Much like in Hurricane Fluttershy (at least in the second half), she maintained her brash behaviour but showed herself to be empathetic when it was needed most, and did not seem one bit out of character.

 

Magic Duel was also great, but lacked the brilliance of Sleepless in Ponyville.

No, you see, that episode was akin to a football team completely smothering their opponent to the point where said opponent was humbled to the point where they realized what they did wrong. Beating Trixie at her own game was one thing, but then Twilight's justification on what she had to do to win set her straight once and for all. If it wasn't enough, Trixie even referred to herself in first person at the end of the episode - she never does that. You can also make a case of the amulet controlling her much moreso than anyone originally expected, but that was pretty obvious.

Sleepless in Ponyville is still losing. I'm sure that's disappointing to alot of you. I voted for SIP if it's any consolation. Both episodes were good. But I agree with that one poster who said Magic Duel is no Hurricane Fluttershy. I also agree with the poster who said it can't be Trixie fans because she lost in the first round. THE First match of the first round. There's still a slight chance that SIP will emerge victorious though.

Each day I will post one topic pitting two episode of MLPFiM against eachother. It's a contest to see which episode is the most liked by the board. The match-ups have been completely random. I included a few future episodes, because, by the time we get to the end of the first round, they will have already premiered.

Today's Matchup: Wonderbolt Academy VS Apple Family Reunion

Oh shoot, here we go. Applejack vs Dash fandom war, incoming!

 

Trying to be objective, I thought that the plot of Wonderbolt Academy flowed a little bit better as Apple Family Reunion, while a great episode, started somewhat slowly.

 

Objectivity gone, more Rainbow Dash, more Pinkie Pie and more Spitfire made me enjoy Wonderbolt Academy better so it gets my vote.

This episode wins by a very slim margin to me.

 

It wins by the other's lacking because: Wonderbolt Academy would have won if Spitfire didn't act like she did not know Rainbow Dash (their meeting at the Gala, her sonic rainboom among other things), and if the episode wasn't left uncomfortably open ended. Also, Pinkie's portrayal was too over the top, and at times somewhat insulting to her character. I do not solely blame this episode though, for Season 3 as a collective has done this, which is one of my very few gripes I have with Season 3.

 

I wins by it's own merit because:

• Applejack got a song!
• Bab Seed returned
• The shooting stars alluding to her parents deaths
• Filly Applejack

Wonderbolt Academy wins it for me. I found that Family Appreciation Day was an average episode that got most of its fans from bringing back old ponies and of course AJ's song. WOnderbolt academy though was a fantastic RD episode that really showed exceptional character development for RD as well as a few references to past episodes like Hurricane FLuttershy

Apple Family Reunion was a really cute episode, but that's really all that I saw in it.  Don't get me wrong, I still thought that it was very good, but that mostly came from the cuteness (filly Applejack = instantaneous simultaneous death/resurrection).  Wonderbolts Academy had a more important story being told, and it was being told rather well in my opinion.

Sorry AJ, I love you but I think your only really good episode so far is The Last Roundup. Family Reunion was okay, but Wonderbolt Academy was very good...and that's not even my favorite Dashie episode.

 

BTW, if Magic Duel survives long enough to run into Hurricane Fluttershy...
