Old/new Brony differences?

Flicker Sweet

Recommended Posts

This is not intended to start a flame war between the new and old Bronies or categorize people as an older/newer Brony.  Don't try to make it into something it is not.

I've noticed recently, over the last week, that there is a bit of a noticeable difference between the older Bronies and the newer ones.

Let me give some examples:
Newer Bronies seem to complain more about Derpy fans and Derpy related threads.  Whereas older Bronies, depending on whether they like Derpy or not, either comment in a supportive manner, or move along without a word

Their OC's are more often than not either all powerful alicorns or nearly all powerful peagsus ponies.  Older Bronies OC's tend to be a bit more diverse and modestly powered, if they are powered at all.

Older Bronies (usually) still hold true to the policy of Love and Tolerate.  But a lot of the newer Bronies tend to have an attitude along the lines of "I love love MLP and anyone who says they don't like it can go F*** themselves in a tree!"

Also, Older Bronies are always happy to see the show on from what I've seen.  Whereas I see newer Bronies posting threads like these:
http://mlpforums.com/topic/45152-hoping-season-4-is-longer/

http://mlpforums.com/topic/45103-faust-left-the-series-has-lost-quality-since-then/

These are not criticisms in any way.  They are just observations.  Honestly, I view myself as a somewhat newer Brony since I've only been one since this time last year.

Feel free to either leave your thoughts, or move along.

I apologize if you found anything in this post offensive, though, honestly, I don't see how you could.....

Allow me to explain:

Implying all old bronies can't be a Hateful Prick from Mars n3WKz.png

Honestly there are no clear gap between old bronies that watched the 1st episode when it aired and new bronies who just finished marathon-ing Season 1, the only difference is how mature one brony compared to another. A new brony can easily be more calm and well-mannered than a veteran brony that can recite all songs just from his memory.

Stupidity and infidelity are not monopolized by younger humans.

by newer and older bronies i assume you mean new bronies as people who have just came into the fandom and older bronies as long time fans since day 1 with that being said I am classified as a new brony but i do not care about Derpy. i didnt even know there was a big to do over the character until i came on the forums or that the character existed for that matter. But according to your observations i would be in the Older Brony category. I watch the show regardless of other peoples views on it and even if the episode i am watching isnt the best i still watch it. Alothoug i do not love everybody thats a fan i do however tolerate them.

I fear this thread will turn into a few dozen people yelling at the mysterious "noobs" without specifying who exactly they are.

This topic is actually timely.  Just today I was planning on making a thread surveying people on how date of Bronification effects liking Derpy Hooves.

I'm certainly what you'd call a "new brony", seeing as I only really got into the fandom around two months ago. Be that as it may, I certainly don't complain about Derpy, create overpowered OCs, or complain about the show too much. That's just not in my nature. I simply enjoy the show and discuss it with other people that enjoy the show.  :)

However, I do think a lot of the new fans are just hopping on the bandwagon, and do follow the tendencies you mentioned. This sort of thing always happens whenever something starts getting increasingly popular, there's really no stopping it.  :(

I haven't made any sort of way to "categorize" you as old or new.....again, don't try to interpret what I said, I meant exactly what the words say

I don't really see any difference. I just think that it all depends on maturity from trolling a anti-brony site to, forgive and forget someone even if they did you harm. I just find that all bronies could be equal, but I just don't see it happening.

I am a new brony (as of november 2012) and yet I show all the characteristics of a old brony (or at least the ones you talked about). What does this make me?

Re-read the original post.  I'm not trying to categorize people, I'm just making an observation about the fandom.  Don't make this into something it is not.

Also, I've seen more older bronies complain about the show than I have seen newer ones.
I have seen both. Some of the older Brnoies that i encounter complain about Hasbro spamming un-needed episodes to sell toys(this includes me as well) and the other bronies i have seen just go with the flow not caring about the way they delivered the shows and whose behind them but rather the message and animations

That's what you implied. Newer bronies tend to do all those bad things while older bronies are much more "elite" when it comes to discussing the show, showing true Love&Tolerate, and generally being a happy, better human beings.

The reality is far more bleak than that. In deviantart alone you can see older brony artist broke down and start churning out nonsense and hateful comments to something pony-like they don't like.

While newer bronies are much more likely to focus on "catching-up" with the canon materials rather than bickering about it.

I apologize for that. I wasn't offended in the slightest by your observations.  In fact the more I think about it the more I see how true it is.

I don't usually see a difference, actually I see older bronies being dissatisfied more then newer ones.  I have to agree with the point made in the first reply

>sophisticated, awesome people start to like MLP >word spreads, more people join >word spreads even more, exponentially gaining new fans >n00bz start to like MLP because it seems to be getting popular >n00bz do stuff like this:

This basically sums up how some (notice I said some) new bronies act.  It seems to me that some (again some) newer bronies like the show just because it's popular.  I can't speak for everyone though.  It seems newer bronies tend to make their overpowered OCs because they don't know its looked down upon yet.

Just as a note, I'm a bit of an older brony (In between season 1 and 2, didn't think I was a forum person so never joined). I don't support  the Derpy Controversy. I think that Hasbro and Studio B did exactly what the needed to.

Also... I love dem stereo-types. But have to agree with other people. It's just people's mentality mostly. If a bunch of stupid people join the fandom at once, it makes it seem like newer bronies are idiots, which I defiantly don't think is true.

no it is not what I implied, I didn't imply anything.  I said exactly what I meant.  Don't try to read between the lines, there's nothing there.

Your view on the Derpy thing makes sense, I think I can agree with that.  As far as the second part of your post that is also fairly sound logic, though I'm not sure why you said that thing about stereotypes.......

Labeling a group of people for a few outstanding individuals with extreme negative (or positive, just mostly negative) traits is stereo-typing. So, technically, that's what you are doing.

No, I don't mean to stereotype.  I'm not saying that all old/new Bronies are like this; I'm just saying that I've noticed these trends in my experience with both sides.  I'm not judging anyone here, just noticing a trend and pointing it out to see who else has noticed.

Now, why should we characterize by old and new?
PEOPLE!!!! I AM NOT CATEGORIZING PEOPLE!!!! I AM JUST SHOWING WHAT I'VE NOTICED AND WONDERNIG IF ANYONE HAS NOTICED IT OR OTHERWISE!!!!!!!

Let's put it this way, everyone will who does take interest in MLP will have their own reasons to like it, whether that means they just wanna be different and be brony for the sake of being different, or whether they actually like the show, fandom, and the themes and actually celebrate them. I think it's fair to say that just like any kind of fandom of anything ever, there will always be the bunch who are just in it for attention or difference. Everything aside though, there is a difference. Some people treat the show and fandom more genuinely than others, that doesn't make them more or less of genuine fans of the show.

Basically this. Now, this does not go at all to say that all new bronies are this way but to me, it seems pretty accurate.

Also, the average age of the brony seems to have changed drastically since before. It used to be mostly college kids and older guys, but now it's many more high school and middle school aged kids.

This poses no problem either, until said kids start bringing themselves to be ignorant and snarky to the haters, and they cause people to create false generalizations about bronies, it's not necessarily an age matter, but more of a maturity matter. I'm barely 15, and I can hold a mature conversation about bronyhood. Anyway, I think I make my point clear.
