Applejack Does Math: TL;DR (speed drawing 0:09:15)

Dagnabbit, you made me do math. If ah've read them there coefficients correctly, ah think the answer's 17 over 160 Y.

(I apologize, my southern accent sucks)

Ah, the old simple days of algebra...

I remember reading somewhere an analysis of AJ's personality that said she'd detest higher math because she's such a practical-type.

Personally, though, I think math is very impractical until you get to things like calculus.

Calculus is the math of change. The real world is very dynamic and is always changing.

For example, you need calculus to find the most cost-effective shape to build a multi-pen corral fence. Well, that is a farm thing, but I guess they don't have those in equestria :P lol.

But you get my point. It applies to a lot of other very practical things.

(Haha, not only did Twilight win against them in the running of the leaves, (5th place. That was surprisingly realistic!) but she could hands-down beat them in math, too, I betcha.)

Anyways... I have a sudden urge to replace that little equation with a lot of very big complicated things and calculus. I do love advanced, complicated stuff XD (I swear I must have an RD-type competitiveness when it comes to math/physics/engineering)

Don't try to mutter the issue with your fancy mathematics! Applejack is to cool for math, and really I don't think many here could answer that problem ether (lord knows I can't lol).

Great expression, you got her look dead on ^_^

Don't sell AJ short: you would be surprised by the calculations involved in bucking apples.

I felt like that was a challenge. It's really easy-peasy, it's just a matter of a few calculations and cancellation. I mean really easy-peasy.

Now, if you want something hard, try orbital mechanics, or better yet, a scenario I recently had to work: ... Okay, I really can't even begin to explain it, or this will turn into a big wall of boring text :P lol. I'll post a small picture, maybe.

Anyways, I think it's

17x(3y^2z^8)

96(1xy5z^7)

= (51/480)yz

I don't understand why the parenthesis were there, or why there was a 1 coefficient. Technically, every number is always being multiplied by 1 :P

Now I feel compelled to offer a real hard math problem. XD

I'll put it in quote tags in case anybody wants to skip it, which I would totally understand

Delta-Vee, the velocity change a spacecraft is capable of, is given by Dv = Ve * ln[R]

(To get anywhere in space, you change the velocity of the spacecraft, by firing the engines to "conduct a Delta-Vee maneuver", which means to change your velocity.)

Where Ve = Velocity of the exhaust in m/s

And R = Mass ratio

Mass ratio is given by

R = (mpp + mi) / (mi) = (mpp / mi) + 1

where mpp is the mass of the propellant, and mi is in the inert mass of the vehicle.

I had to create an equation which described the propellant mass requirements for a mission where one Delta-Vee burn is conducted, the vehicle unloads a significant amount of mass, and then another is conducted. The equation I came up with is:

Ve * ln(((((((mpp + mi + mc1) / (mi + mc1)) / (e(Dv1 / Ve)) ) - 1 ) * (mpp + mi + mc1)) + mi + mc2) / (mi + mc2)) = Dv2

mpp is the mass of the initial propellant, mc1 is the mass of the cargo carried during the Delta-Vee 1 engine firing, and mc2 is the cargo carried during the Delta-Vee 2 engine firing. The equation is solved for Dv2, the second velocity change meneuver.

Lol, this is no joke. That's actually a working equation I came up with.

By the way, get that calculation wrong, and you won't be able to return to Earth after your mission to Mars. So it's kinda important not to mess up XD.

THANK GOODNESS FOR OPEN OFFICE SPREADSHEEET. Makes my life so much easier...

I just have to type it once, then I can plug in numbers on the computer. Lol, so much easier...

Now, if you want a really really hard math problem, there's one I'm trying to solve that honestly puts that earleir one to shame. I don't know if it's even possible to solve it with the basic calculus I know, lol. (By the way, everything on this thread so far is just Algebra.)

I won't bother y'all with explaining it here...

(As much as I love math stuff and all. SO ALONE.)

Now maybe you see what I mean when I post "I'd love to nerd it out with Twilight Sparkle..." :P

Believe it or not I actually find this stuff fun....

Don't sell AJ short: you would be surprised by the calculations involved in bucking apples.

It's because I was inspired by this quote:

"Don't you use you fancy mathematics to the point of the issue"

I always thought that was a little confusing. On one side, I've read that AJ is the sort of practical character that would despise higher math. On the other side, she would need, or it would enormously help to use math to run the business. It would be extremely difficult to stay in business without doing the math...

You got math skills. One smart pony like Twilight

Thanks ^^

It took me a long time to come up with that, if you understand the underlying physics, and how I assembled it from a few smaller equations, it wasn't quiet as hard to make as it looks... But it certainly does get annoying counting all the parenthesis when you have to type it in somewhere :P

Just a fun hobby, so to speak. A somewhat rare kind I'd love to share with someone like Twilight (She has a telescope!) :D

um...no...she can't solve the equation and neither can you because there's nothing on the other side.
