Alright everyone, i'm sure if you all have been keeping up to date with equestria daily, then you are aware of the first fanmade episode Double Rainboom, which debuts at 8 pm CST during a livestream, and 8:30 pm CST on YouTube. Are you guys looking forward to it?

Your topic, 'Double Rainboom' has been merged with a pre-existing topic of the same name, for fairly obvious reasons smile.png All discussion and updates to Double Rainboom and its' release date work just fine in a single topic ^^

Got the countdown open on another page.  I am definitely looking forward to it, and I hope that more fan videos gain traction and have the intelligence to go to Hasbro first, like this one, rather than hoping they will be protected under fair use.

Echoing @@TanktheTortoise above on one thing. I'm also looking forward to it, particularly the second half of the fan-episode. I watched the first half of it when some people recorded the preview from the conventions, and it was very well-done. I hope Rich and the rest of the crew continue to keep up with that quality in the second half.

Normally, because it's a fan project, I tend to be much more lenient in my comments. But not this time. Rich and his crew are treating this piece like a professional product made my DHX, as if it can be released on television. This project is necessary for him to graduate, and he is attempting to prove to his college and audience that he is ready to work in the animation business. Therefore, I'll give Double Rainboom the same treatment like I give to the professionally licensed episodes and will judge it accordingly.

I hope that more fan videos gain traction and have the intelligence to go to Hasbro first, like this one, rather than hoping they will be protected under fair use.

I hope so, too, but I don't think Hasbro will continually grant bronies permission unless without a good reason. Hasbro granted Rich the permission to work on Double Rainboom because he needs this piece in order to graduate from Savannah's College of Art and Design.

So I just finished watching it on Everfree...

And I can safely say that I enjoyed every moment of it! It pleased my Pinkiedash tastes, the cross-over was brilliantly done, and I don't think I'll ever see so many references in an episode again! Wonder how many lawsuits will appear...

Sure, some actual episodes are better, but because it's a fan-made episode I think they did an incredible job. They showed real animation skills - it could pass for a real episode, if not a jokester one. They knew exactly what would please the crowd cameo-wise. I'd call it being too heavy-handed with fan service, but the complete randomness and zaniness of the whole thing makes me not mind at all. They can get away with it and make it thoroughly entertaining.

Travelling to Townsville - never saw it coming, and I just absolutely loved it. It flaunts their ability to do different animation styles, and it was simply a fantastic thing to do. They got the Powerpuff Girls to act just as they would act - they remembered that to them, Rainbow Dash is a pony and shouldn't be talking! Their reactions were so funny!

The voice acting was really, really good. Pinkie Pie's was spot-on, magnificent talent on whoever voiced her. Rainbow Dash and Twilight Sparkle were also really good - the Powerpuff Girls too!

And to top it all off, Pinkie Pie antics! The thing I love!

9.5/10. Superb.

I'm with Flipturn here, heavily-handed fan-service wise, but the episode was great overall. Can't wait to see it on YouTube.

Now somebody will probably try to list all the references.

Alright, time for me:

Animation was great, voice acting was great but sometimes a bit forced an unnatural, as for the plot... the first part was ok, but then... I just don't like PPG. And that made me dislike this episode. Technically it was perfect as for a fan made video, but that PPG crossover ruined it for me. Honestly, I feel a bit disappointed. But that's just my opinion.

Holy hot damn. That was completely unexpected.

To begin, there were so many different references in this that I just didn't know where to begin! I mean once she went in the portal and I saw Johnny Bravo, I actually went WTF?! But at the same time, I marked out and was really completely taken by surprise onto the entire thing.

The Powerpuff Girls part was really really done well. I didn't see it coming, but the animation could have given it away if I actually could remember it. Lauren Faust would be pleased that you used both of her brainchilds in this.

Overall it was fantastic for a fanmade episode. Rainbow Dash was spot on, as was Pinkie Pie. Twilight was very good, but her voice seemed a bit off on parts in terms of volume. For example, it seemed like she should have been louder when she called for Dash to slow down. But that's me just being picky.

Great job, shoutout to Plank.

spoilers ahead:

also, it makes perfect sense when taking into consideration the fact that Craig and Lauren were once married, it was absolutely normal to join their shows together at one point, it was just a question of time

I loved it!

-I'm not sure if anyone else noticed, but during that fluttershy scene some of the animals include bugs bunny, daffy duck, and perry the platypus.

-I'm not sure why people in the comment section are complaining about the PPG crossover. A lot of their reasoning is that "it was supposed to resemble the actual show" and a PPG crossover would never happen in the real show. My question is since when did fanfiction ever have to resemble the actual show? Isn't the point of fanfiction to do something that the show would never do?

-Oh, and I just have to say this. Every time bronies talk about PPG inevitably one brony will call Lauren Faust the creator of PPG. She's not the creator. She did work on the show though, but I don't think she had anything to do with the show until season 3. Her husband Craig McCracken is the creator.

Very disappointed.  The pacing was making me grit my teeth (bits that should have been resolved in 3-5 seconds were dragged out to 20) and the writing overall was just bad.  At one point I had hopes the episode was going somewhere interesting and was 'sobering up,' but it just jumped the shark entirely instead.

Visually?  It's stunning.  Absolutely wonderful.  Certainly show-quality.  Since that's what these students were studying, that's where their strengths lie, and it really comes through.

Still, with a crew of 105, they couldn't *bother* to make a couple of those contributors decent writers who could've written an engaging story that wasn't a mish-mash of fan-service and crossovers?  Ugh.

I thought it was very good! I sat smiling through the whole episode, the animation was very good and the voices were pretty good too. Though the voice sync were.. less good. But it was a funny episode overall

I was like "what the..." when I saw Johnny Bravo, and when I saw that town I directly knew that it was townsville

I disagree. It's not a question of them not "bothering" to make a story. I'm sure they were perfectly capable of it. What they wanted to create was an entertaining watch, not a sensible watch. Fan-made material doesn't always need to have a story, so long as you can, in the end, enjoy it. And for me personally, the zaniness and absurdity of what happened with the crossover is totally wild, it makes up for not elaborating on the story.

Well, I thought that was pretty awesome.  The plot was unexpected.  It is cool that it was so much like a real episode, but still included things that could never be done in the actual show.

I don't have a problem with zany, and I don't have a problem with absurdity, in the right context.  You can have both and still have a strong story.  Double Rainboom did not even attempt to do so.

Yes, many were and will be entertained by it, but it pains me on a deep level to see such stunning visuals paired with such an abysmal plot.  The bright, random goofiness did not 'make up' for lack of plot, it simply distracted viewers from the fact there wasn't one past a certain point.

In the end, yes, it's a fan-made episode of a pony cartoon and one shouldn't expect MUCH in the way of story, but an attempt would have been nice.
