gaming New to Steam, looking for good free-to-play games.

As I stated in the title, I'm new to Steam. Though I created my account a while ago, I never really used it until recently. I'm looking for good, free-to-play (I have no moneys ;-; ) games that DON'T require a lot of processing power for a computer. I have a cheap, $300 Compaq laptop with a dual core AMD processor. Any recommendations?

PS: I already play Terraria and I'm getting a copy of Dota 2 from a friend.

PPS: Add me on Steam if you do so desire! Steam ID: zAngryUnicorn img-1325349-1-biggrin.png

Try playing Team Fortress 2. It is free-to-play and doesn't require a powerful computer. It is also very fun and addicting. It still has a lot of people playing too.

I've heard of TF2, but I haven't really considered looking into it before. How much of a learning curve is there when you're used to games like Call of Duty or Battlefield? I think TF2 is in 3rd person if I'm not mistaking...

TF2 is in first person. It's quite fun.

I would also recommend Portal and Portal 2, Deadlight, Gary's Mod, Audiosurf, Terraria, and Ace of Spades.

Team Fortress 2 is a first-person shooter. It is nothing like Battlefield or Call of Duty. It is easy to learn, but hard to master. If you need help, there is a handy in-game tutorial.

It's in first person. You'll have to learn some things, but it's fairly easy once you get into it.

Also, there is an offline training mode, so...

EDIT: Dammit, missed by a few seconds.

Nah, TF2 is 1st Person. It's not that hard to get used to, actually. I was surprised how well I adapted, being an Xbox Gamer myself.

It's got a lot of that good ol' Valve charm and humor in it. It's hard to take seriously sometimes...

I also enjoy Garry's Mod (which is very like TF2), Chivalry: Medieval Warfare and Civilization V, which are all also Steam games.

Chivalry is basically CoD with swords, hatchets and arrows. Just so you know.

Okay good, so I DON'T have to get used to a third person game XD. I'm a hardcore Nintendo player myself. The games that you guys mentioned are free to play, or no?

Well, I don't know about the others, but Team Fortress 2 is completely 100% free-to-play. You never have to pay if you don't want to.

Well, TF2 is free. None of the ones I listed personally are free, although I know Garry's mod is relatively inexpensive... And I'm fairly sure that the Portal series is not free either.

Even though you can download the games straight from the internet on Steam, that doesn't mean they're free.

Good, good. I'll check that game out then! You all made it sound a lot more interesting than I originally thought at first. Though, I have heard about TF2 and hats... Lol I don't really know what that's about XP

Hats are basically...Hats you can put on each of the individual classes. They serve no purpose other than being a hat.

Hope you enjoy TF2

Hats are hats... Hmmm good to know. I hope I also have a good time with TF2. All I have to do is get used to using a keyboard and mouse to play an FPS :/

Its no too hard. You will get used to it eventually. Word of advice though, when playing, remember that you are playing Team Fortress 2, not Battlefield or Call of Duty. This is a common mistake with new players and will get you killed if you play it like BF or COD

huh.png  So what kind of gameplay style should I play then? I'm usually a very rushy player in CoD (rocking a 1.73 K/D average) and pretty conservative/defensive Battlefield player...

Depends on what class you use. I will provide some of my styles when I play for each class.

Spy-Use stealth to your advantage. Turn invisible and while invisible, turn into one of the opposing team players. Then go over to the other team's side as fast as you can and wait to you turn visible again. Then, act like you are on the other team, but backstab the people when you get the chance.

Sniper- Find a good place that gets a good view of the map and camp there.

Medic-Stay to the sidelines and use the medi-gun when people call for MEDIC!

Engineer-Find a good place for a base and make a dispenser. Upgrade that and then build a turret. Upgrade that. Then just sit in your base and take care of your machines while they do the rest. You can build a teleporter if you want.

Demoman-I don't use him as much, but I know a good technique. Shoot sticky bombs around the edge of a entrance and set the bombs off when the enemy goes  through.

Heavy- Basically just go through a large crowd of players and hold the fire button down.

Soldier-Use your rocket launcher for long-rage, shotgun for short-range, and melee for melee. Pretty simple

Scout- Run around and do hit and runs on players. When you are being fired at, use the double jump to your advantage. Try to jump to the left or right of any bullets that come at you.

Pyro-A very good class for beginners. Just around and use your flamethrower on any enemy you see.

Remember in TF2, you can't sprint and you can't aim down on sights. Also, you have to switch between weapons. Including melee

HATS ARE GOD

CALL THE GABEN! CAST HIM INTO THE PIT OF THREES!

No, but seriously. Hats, guys. Hats are the soul of Team Fortress 2.

When you're on steam click on "store" then go to the games tab and select the "Free to play" from the sub menu for a more complete list of games. At the bottom of a game's main page should be the system requirements. As stated, TF2 doesn't ask much of you hardware though it will certainly take advantage of extra graphics power. If need be tune down the settings under game options.

Dang... I have a lot to learn. Thanks a load for all the info! Helps me out a bunch so I'm not a complete newb when I play my first ten or so matches.

A few tidbits: Engie's teleporters are essential on large maps.

Medic should always be healing/overhealing.

Pyro can press m2 and blast enemies away/over cliffs/etc.

Demo can jump using his sticky bomb explosions.

Soldier can jump with rockets.

You mentioned you were getting a copy of Dota 2, which is also a great game with tons of classes to chose from. Maybe we could have a go at it if you want. I'll add you on steam.

Play TF2, one of the reasons is that they have a ton of servers to play on, including brony servers. ;)

Also I would recomend MapleStory too if you are a RPG fan.
