Nah. Id rather actually do it and then be tired with a slight headache starting and not lie about how well versed I am in music making.

Only had it for maybe a year or more and I'm still learning all of its amazing abilities. Not to mention I've only tried Fl Studio.

I just jumped in one day and attempted something. No real learning other than experience and some tutorials. I am also still really amateur at the whole thing.

 

I say just try it.

i just kinda want some kind of direction to 'aim' against, ya? i've been stuck in this route for quite a long time, and i'd very much want to get some kind of know-how about how i can utilize all these ideas that are running around in my head all the time.

i'm actually sorta scared that my one external harddrive will fail. is this irrational or not? i've had it for almost a year now.

 

Externals become iffy if they are kept off the powergrid for extended periods of time.

If you have kept it plugged in, no worries.

 

It should at minimum last a few years anyway.

If it's making weird sounds, you might wanna back it up.

I will confess that my opinion of cassettes is colored somewhat by the frequency with which I've had them eaten alive by tape decks.

 

As for HDDs, they aren't bullet proof, to be sure, but they are fairly sturdy with a decent RAID setup, though that starts to become financially impractical once you start going up into the several terabyte range in terms of storage.

 

Any sort of computer hardware can, and will ultimately fail. There's not really anything you can do to guard against it completely.

 

Yeah, well, that's why it was a shitty medium.

 

I just skipped the whole super secure thing and got myself murder of butt cheap 500's. I know they work for certain amount of time.

well admittedly, i do have an audio engineering class in school were we are working with a DAW, so things might start to unravel there, finally. maybe i'm just impatient about all of this lol. it's kinda hard to just be patient about this and wait what will happen when i have this burning desire to just spew out every musical idea i have into some shape and form.

As soon as it starts becoming (more) sluggish or behaves differently, back it up and you are golden.

Kinda, yeah. You should still get that 2 years out of it.

That USB transfer rate is supposed to hinder you from doing just that anyway. =P

 

Remember, minimums, it might happily run for a decade without an issue.

 

Once it stops working normally for you, look into making a back up, that's basically all there is to it.
