That's how they look... I'm not sure how familar you're with the game and the series. The tribe she belongs to is called "Twili", they were previously known as "the dark interlopers" before they were banished to the twilight realm. The suns and atmosphere of the realm changed their appearance.

 

The "human" form is her true form and the imp form was just a curse placed upon her pregame. (Though, her imp form is more popular and overall more seen in fan content)

The helm you see on Midna's head is called the "Fused Shadow" (In a broken state). It's the great weapon that the Dark Interlopers used in the Interloper War in order to get closer to the Sacred Realm and take the Triforce for themselves. Let's just say they lost and were banished to the Twilight. (The helm was then lost and found my Midna later on...)

I've and it did help slightly but it's not the main cause. I just happen to have people who're... a bit noisy and careless for others sleep. :<
