Rainbow Dash isn't her usual upbeat self. She mainly seems depressed.

The others ask her what is up, but she narrowly avoids questions, so after the gang follow her around for a bit, it eventually gets revealed that Rainbow's father passed away a few years back.

This one is kinda hard. Why does RD get upset? And why now?

Is there something that reminds her of her dad? Is there anything that causes her to miss him, or need his presence?

What happened to him?

A weather man who looks very happy and cheerful on TV is actually very sad and crappy in reality.

How is his life outside the screen?

Any family/friend/relatives? Do they know about his true self?

What makes him all sappy about his life?

How does night view mirror works?

For your resurrection needs

Oh, thanks! *puts card in pocket even though never played the game* Now, if only Philomena could teach me the amazing art of resurrection...

Fanfic idea:

Rainbow Dash isn't her usual upbeat self. She mainly seems depressed.

The others ask her what is up, but she narrowly avoids questions, so after the gang follow her around for a bit, it eventually gets revealed that Rainbow's father passed away a few years back.

----------

This idea mainly springs from my own personal experience in losing my father, and for this reason, it's probably gonna be very difficult to write properly, but I really wanna do this.

Second idea:

A weather man who looks very happy and cheerful on TV is actually very sad and crappy in reality.

Not sure exactly where I'm gonna go with this, so I'll probably scrap it in place of something much better.

----------

This idea started in a writing session my lecturer organised where we were given a few random words from a newspaper.

My words were 'Perfect Day', and with the weather man idea, I wanted to see how I could make the opposite to a perfect day.

If I can, I might see if I can make a short comedy sketch... Still not sure though.

Holy pancakes, this post is over 800 characters...

Well, for the first, that's really nice Jay. :) But just have something in consideration. Try to make the reason of Rainbow's losing her father as logical as you can, even though it relates to your feelings. I have full trust the "feels" part you will get, but it would be nice to know how well you can make it. And...I'm sorry to hear that. :( *hugs*

As for the second, don't discard it just yet. Try to see if you can add the idea a little more body and work your way up from there. If not, then discard it. No use trying to force an idea for something that is really difficult to.

I want to base this story during the Hearth's Warming Eve celebrations because that's the time when RD's dad passed away, so it's pretty much jolly and cheerful all around with RD being the exception.

I think the biggest challenge is finding a reason for her depression other than it just being that time of year...

---

Again, very closely relating this to myself because my dad actually passed away on Christmas of all possible times. :/

The few ideas I've had for this one involve him pretty much being put through a living hell. His wife is divorcing him, he's getting evicted, and to this point he pretty much hates his life, but he's forced to put on a smile due to him being a weather man. Edited by JayBee

Yeouch... Sorry :x

Anyway, for the story itself, you need to work more on the "reminded of her dad" part. RD got to play as a military guy on the stage, a correlation about her dad also being a military guy can do good to tense up the sadness.

Something about her wearing the costume made her almost looked like her dad?

Hm... You need someone to break the wall of sadness around him :V

Maybe he found a hobby that reminds him on his previous life, or an old friend, or a random mare suddenly brags in his life

Not speaking on fanon terms, but maybe sometime in Rainbow's fillyhood her dad died because of Rainbow's shortcomings, like she was too needy even though she tried masking it. Her dad ran into an accident as a result and she thinks she failed him and thus is really arrogant at times, but that's only because she fears failing from it.

Well there no real Cadance fan here :<

I'm a fan of everypony. Does that count?

You don't need to find another reason for her to get upset, however, you can strengthen the feeling by putting actions that are around the celebration that remind Dash of the good times she had with her dad. That would be a good idea. And also.....oh...my...Celestia.......WHY DON'T I HAVE HUGGING IMAGES RIGHT NOW?! :(

As for the second, good idea but....try not to make it WAAAAAAAAAY too bad. Living hell is fine, but it would rather be better if the reader didn't see it coming from a mile away so easily, so taht the surprise for the actual living hell is bigger.

So... Her being a spoiled brat killed her dad?

That will carry a whole different meaning you know, and the entire story will get a... less-than-comfortable feel about it.

Explain?

Doesn't really matter how well-written it is, if an author blamed something dire to a canon character, there will be butthurt among the reader.

There are quite a tension about that on some fanfic's comment section

The second idea is being written as a screenplay rather than a words all over the place story because it's eventually going to become a short movie, probably about 5 minutes or so in length.

One idea I've had is having as little dialogue as possible from the main when he's shown in his depressive state, so his body language will speak louder that he actually does.

Body language is hard to write or direct though.

I've got a very small start on it, and I hope I can get it from how it is in my head down onto paper.

One note: Try to get a song that match your feel when you're thinking about the story, then repeat that shit indefinitely when you write it :)

Sometimes it helps you to focus

Eenope!

Well, damm. Oh well. I am a fan of ALMOST everypony, but Rarity and Fluttershy still are fav 1 and 2 :D

Everypony, you say?

Almost. Take out Diamond Tiara, Silver Spoon, Prince Blueblood and Gilda, and yes. (Although I loved it when Diamond Tiara made of J J Jameson, as much as I don't like her, and griffons are awesome, so it's 80/20 with Gilda)

Definitely gonna use these ideas. Thanks :)

Interesting and I hope I at least helped with it and that you have good luck! :) Also what SW said is true. Sometimes, a certain song will help you convey better your writing thoughts, help you focus with it...and let the writing begin. :) I know I do. Almost every time I write, I write with music.

Hey, do you think what happened to create bronies will happen again? I saw something about 'petters' (odd name). They are people who like the new Littlest Pet Shop.

Say, what do you listen to when you're writing?

I'm usually using these two

Music always helps me focus, but finding sad stuff is hard.

I think the reason the brony fandom took off as much as it did is because nobody saw it coming.

It was already a well established franchise, but all the previous gen cartoons were pretty much cheesy crapfests.
