My computer says it's reserved a Windows 10 update, so all I gotta do is wait until the time is right.

 

I need an external hard drive for this operation.

Why would you need an external hard drive? You shouldn't need to back up data for an update.

In case something goes catastrophically wrong and I need to restore something.

 

Then again, all of my important stuff is on cloud storage or on flash drives; the only thing I'd really need to back up is my SC4 mods and savegames (but even then, those are on drives that are separate from the drive the OS is even on).

My computer I am using now is kind of a tablet, it is more of a laptop/tablet hybrid, though I am using it more as a desktop right now. xD Connected to an external keyboard, and an external mouse, and an external monitor. The monitor has less resolution then the laptop screen but it is nice to do it this way. xD
