Well now this is news, but yeah I only have heard of her, never did know much about her at all, except that she was the Prime Minister of the UK. It's sad that she passed away, though I never knew that she was the first female prime minister in the United Kingdom.

OH MY GOD SHE DIED!?

I knew she was in bad shape, but I had no idea she died! That's so horrible! She was my idol growing up, because I was so obsessed with politics. Here, this is my very favorite quote of hers: (I actually have it on my mirror).

"Being powerful is like being a lady. If you have to tell someone you are, you aren't."

Hello!

The Iron lady has fallen... It's always sad to see a person go, and it's always sad to see a person of such importance to go aswell... I've heard quite a bit of her, and I don't even live in the United Kingdom. She was quite known throughout the world, and not just the UK. Without further ado, I'd like to pay my respects, and wish her relatives, family, friends the best in coping with this loss...

That's much more eloquent than what I said, although this is what I wanted to say.

I still can't believe she's dead. She didn't seem human at times. But that's the thing about legends, they'll never die. And they may try to erase her from history, but we can tell our children her accomplishments, her utter stubbornness, and how she was an incredible inspiration to everyone.

This is a sad moment...she was truly an idol...

She was indeed a rolemodel for women and even more so for people in general.

So Id also wish my condolences to her family and friends and to everyone who looked up to her...

May she Rest In Peace...

In my opinion, she was an amazing woman. She fought the ideas of Socialism, and it worked well.

I know some call her "controversial" because they don't like here policies now and will go out of there way to say England is better now than under her. But then conservaties and Liberals liked her.

Rest in Peace.

Sad news indeed. Margaret Thatcher was undoubtedly one of the most important persons Britain ever had. Not only did she save her country from economic disaster, she also lead her country through a war with Argentina . She will be remembered

R.I.P Iron Lady

Well it's a shame she died, just like any death. I know this is an "R.I.P" thread, which generally will dismiss any negative input, but Thatcher was an extreme right wing conservative, who dissabled britain by shutting down its steel industry, putting thousands out of work. I don't know of any of this "saving the economy" tripe, because she's the one who destroyed it in the first place. Thatcher was famous for saying that the steel industry is old fashioned, and that Britains economy ought to rest on financial services, which is understandable of course, since her husband was a banker. Britain went down the drain, because the workers behind the financial services did not recquire high qualifications. Therefore, any British company willing to hire people to sell their products over the phone simply hired whoever could be payed the least. So therefore, huge amounts of working forces were hired from south-east asia, as they worked for next to nothing back then, meaning lasting unemployment in the UK. The problem Thatcher had was that she always thought that if someone wanted financial service, they would look for British services. Which didn't happen. But it did give the bankers more power, which of course was a benefit for her own husband. But you know, all the respect, shame that she died. R.I.P

Didn't know that she's died, that's a shame she was a very iconic prime minister in my country, I don't know much about politics but know my Nana lives in a nice house because she could sell her ex council house for more than when she bought it thanks to Margret Thatcher in the 1980s letting folk buy council houses and all that stuff, even though despite this my Nana used to complain about her lol

Anyway R.I.P Mrs Thatcher

It's a shame. Margaret Thatcher was truly a great woman. The Iron Lady will be missed.

JK Rowling denies this, but the character Dolores Umbridge is actually loosely based on Thatcher, who Rowling was never fond of.

Now, I'm not overly aware of how successful a Prime Minister she was, being an American born after her time, but I think she was great. Mostly because of that Umbridge thing.

I'm a Harry Potter fanatic.

That is like...the most backhanded RIP I've ever read. blink.png I don't know, I'm an American and I respect the Iron Lady greatly. I know I'm among a minority here, but still.

I wasn't rying to show dissrespect, its just I think that people shouldn't claim she was an amazing politician and a true idol just because she died, because she simply wasn't. At least in my opinion. It's like with michael jackson, the second he died, the media marketed off his image, and everybody claimed how much they loved him....

Just heard about this this morning in my American Presidency class, and was quite saddened at the news.  Never studied Thatcher that much, but I have immense respect for her and her beliefs, and she's been a very important figure at my college.  In fact, if I'm not mistaken, Hillsdale College is the only college in the U.S. that has a statue of her (correct me if I'm wrong).  Anyways, very saddened as I said by this news; rest in peace Mrs. Thatcher, as the Iron Lady you were a champion of freedom who accomplished great things in your lifetime.  God's blessings on you and your family. img-1351671-1-sad.png

(this is actually the statue at my college of the Iron Lady; been walking past this thing almost every day for the last 4 years)

Er, no, people were saying she was a true idol and an amazing politician long before she died. Whether you agree with it or not is besides the point - her death merely reminded the world of how much we loved her. Deaths tend to do that.

And Michael Jackson is creepy as hell. Amazing dancer, and the music video for Smooth Criminal is the best one I've ever seen, but he's still creepy!! O_O

Dang.  Pope John Paul II, Reagan, and Margaret Thatcher are probably the three 'westerners' most responsible for the fall of the Soviet Union and the good economic times countries enjoyed in the 1990's and 2000's.   (I differ with klick-klack if you can't tell.:))

I remember hearing some news story about how the UK was debating what to do about the Falklands, and she stood up and told everyone how it needed to be.  The headline read "Thatcher: The only man in parliament".

I didn't know much about her, other than that she was the first woman PM, and was conservative. But those two things make her pretty awesome, and it's sad that she died.

I have a bumper sticker reading: "The trouble with Socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money." -Margret Thatcher.

It's right above my RD sticker, which I'm sure is confusing to people who think bronies are all gay and/or liberal :)

I greatly respected her before she even died, and most of the media is saying "she's dead, sad, but the stuff she did was bad."

Although, it depends who you talk to who she was. I know before her death here she was suffering from multiple strokes and kind of senile.

Certainly being covered well. BBC news at one was extended and news at six both local and national news have covered it, in fact the national news was only about her. Most of the radio news I've heard have had just the one story too.

Not so I've seen here but there were interviews with the public etc.

Rest in peace to the iron lady.

Yeah she did shut down the steel industry in England. But then again I don't know she did get England out of a tough recession they had in the 1980s. She was anti-communism/socialism which is a plus for me. She proved to the world don't screw with English colonies with the military victory in the Falkland's. A hard liner against the Ira somewhat of a pro and con for me since I somewhat support my Irish brethren. But she used to enjoy SAS training sessions she latterly was made of iron will. The SAS often did live fire training and she and her assistants would play hostages. She often was noted that her assistants were scared shitless I mean that literally while she would stand there not even flinching in fact she scared some of her special forces members with her iron will.  So Margaret thatcher despite being a conservative she did more for England in keeping its power than the labour party ever did.

A lot of Margaret Thatcher's ideas were considered .. crazy during her time in power. She fought hard to keep Britain out of the EU.... now to some Brits that's not looking like such a bad idea. She was very inspirational her political philosophy has its own name "Thatcherism". She is defiantly on the top of my "most inspirational leaders" list right up there with Churchill. I suppose we remember her most because of the 80's and the Falklands War. I'm not even British but if i were around then i would have supported her. I knew she had been ill but this is a shocker.. The legacy of the Iron Lady will live on.

I respect her completely, it's not an easy job being a prime minster of anywhere :).

But there has been so many horrible things said about her online over the last few days it's unreal :/.

It's usually a bad sign when the only compliment we can give someone is "(S)he stood up for what (s)he believed in."  There is scarcely anything to be praised from Thatcher's administration.

It's also funny to see Americans complain about how American politics has aggressive insults and denunciations.  US partisanship is , in my opinion, far too weak given the importance of decisions being made.  I remember a few months ago when every bloc in the Australian parliament was condemning some other bloc as "misogynistic".  And in the UK, well, there's the "Ding Dong the witch is dead" campaign.

Perhaps it's not the underwhelming American reaction, but instead the surprisingly forceful British one.  In the US, no one objects when we name airports after Reagan only a few years after his death, and he caused quite a lot of devastation as well (though probably not as much as Thatcher).

By the way: No offense, but I have to point out how you seem to fit stereotypes.  A Scotsman with a hammer and sickle avatar is anti-Thatcher; not much surprise there.

There are very very few people I know who think she was any good, my facebook (with people from a range on places in the UK) was spammed with "The witch is dead" ect the entire day.

Although I think a lot of people don't fully understand what she stood for or what the sate of the country was like at the time (because of this lack of understanding I have neutral feeling towards her).
