Season 3 Finale: The "It's part of a 3-parter" argument.

As someone who actually really loves this episode, even I cringe at the "it's part of a 3-parter" argument. If you're going to defend an episode, use something from the episode. I'm tired of seeing this:

Guy who hates MMC: It was rushed!

Guy who likes MMC: Technically it's only part 1. Meghan McCarthy said so.

They are completely missing the point. Magical Mystery Cure is still a stand alone episode, even though it's part of a longer arc. It's still ONE story. It should be treated as one story. The Season 4 premiere is going to be more like a sequal.

Now I understand if they are just talking about the concept of Alicorn Twilight, and they're really trying to say that you should give Season 4 a chance before declaring the show ruined. But when they use this argument for the episode itself, that's just weak. And remember, this is coming from someone who thought this was a fantastic episode.

What if we were talking about a series of movies? When people said that Transformers 2 sucked, do you really think that anyone would take you seriously if you said, "Don't worry, there's going to be a third one. Your argument is invalid."

I'm sorry, but just because the arc is incomplete, does not excuse the episode from criticism. That's just ridiculous.

Well, I agree partly to what you are saying . I too loved the episode, and thought it was great. But, I disagree with saying it makes no sense telling people theres more to come to make the episode better.

I think people are saying give season 4 a chance, because of the two parters coming up is a very logical way of saying give this a chance. If people wanted to leave because of this episode (which I thought was stupid), it made them excited for the upcoming season and let them stay longer and enjoy the show.

I understand what you're saying. But if someone doesn't like this episode, you shouldn't tell them that their argument is invalid just because there's more pony in the future.

Good point. But I think if they liked the show before the episode, and are making a very rash decision based off an episode to completely quite the show all together, you should atleast try to talk them out of it the best way you can.

Yeah, but I'm not talking about people who are leaving the fandom. Just people who don't like the episode. I really do think that it's unfair for someone to treat them like their criticism doesn't mean anything, even though I don't agree with it.

Here's where I think people are coming from with this. A lot of people criticize the episode for not explaining the role of a princess, or just not answering what comes next for twilight. Where she is going to live, Will she still see her friends ect. The people who use this argument are I think trying to say is that those questions may indeed be addressed in the future as this is an ongoing series. The point of the episode was to show twilight getting to that point, not answer everything. At the very least the time wouldn't allow for that. So I think many who use the argument are actually addressing specific statements and not trying to use it to address the episode as a whole. They just may not express their stances as well perhaps. Though of coarse there are those that do use it to defend the whole episode.

However I agree, this shouldnt be the basis of your argument for the episode's or any episodes quality. If it is I think most will find it mos unconvincing.

Months later, I still remember the frustration I felt after seeing Prometheus and the assertion that everything will suck less when the sequel comes out and makes things less nonsensical.

Well, that's all fine and dandy, but that doesn't mean you get to screw audiences out of satisfaction now because it'll make sense eventually. There's a difference between a cliff hanger and ambiguity and straight up giving us an incomplete story.

Now, by no means am I saying that MMC is as bad as Prometheus (I actually like the episode), but it's a valid complaint.

Yes that is one of the worst arguments I have heard in favor MMC, I mean really even if the season 4 opener goes over well and I really hope it does that is still no excuse that it as an episode was rushed and made absolutely zero sense whatsoever. The cutie mark switching story should have been its own episode leading into a two part finale or at least part 1 of a two part finale, this is the most profound change in the series so far and people are treating it like all they are doing is giving Twilight a pair of wings and a fancy title.

Why would people even argue about it?

It might become part of a 3 parter, but we don't know for sure. I don't think it is part of a 3 parter, it would probably just be part 2 of the finale for Season 4 then they end it from there. Nothing to say much about that.

Agreed. Stacking on a well-executed two-parter won't make Magical Mystery Cure any better, regardless of whether one loves the episode or despises it. Personally, I think the three-part thing is that the next episodes are supposed to contine the business of pursuading the audience that Twilight as an Alicorn will work for the series, like Anadu Kune said above. I still need a decent amount of convincing myself, so I hope that these future episodes are up to the task.

I agree, it is a good episode in itself in my opinion. I dont use it to defend that its a good episode, but when people say it should have been a 2 parter it makes sense to say that it basically will be a 3 parter when S4E1 & 2 come out. Its not a reason that makes that episode better but it will have more to it .
