Turtles Forever (2009) I like this movie but I don’t like how they portrayed the 1987 turtles. Not their voices, their personalities. I understand that the 1987 series is a comedy, but it still took things seriously when it needed to, and the turtles weren’t total idiots. But with that said, I still like this movie.

Are you going through all the turtles media? I did that last year.

Dog Man (2025), a surely entertaining kids movie.  A James Brown cover song is in it.  Let's see if @Dreambiscuit can catch up with it:hug_day: and put away that annoying cat.

Dredd (2012) I’m not gonna call this a masterpiece but I do like it, and it does occupy a place on my list of go-to peaceful movies (not that it’s very peaceful to anyone but me). Like The Raid: Redemption, this movies is a battle from the ground floor to the top of a high-rise full of criminals with guns. The story is simple; see badguy, shoot badguy. That’s all you need to know. 7.5/10

The Arrival (1996) Charlie Sheen plays an astronomer who discovers an alien signal, but when he tries to report it, the powers that be, shall we say, are already aware. This is a decent mid-level sleeper that I’ve always had a mild affection for. It’s not overly ambitious but it doesn’t hold back the story it wants to tell. 6.5/10

The Recall (2017) Junk. Aliens chasing some really, really stupid teenagers through the woods. Okay, I guess it helped get Wesley Snipes back in the acting game; he got a nice monologue, looked good against a cast of idiotic teens with no talent or personality, and his scenes could be filmed in two days. But the movie was incredibly lame. 3/10

The Lord of The Rings: The War of the Rohirrim (Steelbook Edition). Two caviats: 1) The 4K Steelbook release, despite the only addition that seems to have any special features, lacks any commentary tracks; 2) it also does not include either the Japanese-language dub or Japaniese subtitles (at least on the Blu-ray. Let me know if either is included on the 4K Ultra HD disc; we don't have a 4K player).

About Fate (2022) What a pleasant surprise! This is just a simple rom-com about a guy pretending to be a girl’s boyfriend to help her keep up appearances to her family and friends. Nothing terribly new there, but what made this such a gem was the fact that it was all so normal! The girl (Emma Roberts) who is a real girl no matter what kinds of roles she gets here and there, was typically likeable and relatable, while her fake boyfriend (Thomas Mann) who fell into her life by accident, or act of fate, is what I call a REAL man; not the usual Hollywood (via Hallmark channel) template of cool stud with ripped body and permanent three-day growth of beard. This guy was anything but cool; looking for all the world like a middle-aged family man before he reaches middle age, complete with spectacles and a hairline trying to recede. Sure, I like glamorous movie stars, but there’s a place for star quality and a place for people who are just plain nice, and these characters are nice. No big drama here or anything from Hollywood’s checklist; just a good movie made the way they used to be made when it was about entertainment and not some sort of statement. 7.5/10

Red Dawn (2012) Here’s an interesting premise of what might happen in the unlikely case of an armed invasion of U.S. soil. This is a remake that’s a little simpler and to-the-point than the 1984 original, and for that reason, among a few others, I like it more. The ’84 version seemed a little bogged down by the misperception that the cast was a powerhouse of brilliant new acting talent. They weren’t, and showcasing it up close and personal made it all the more apparent. The 2012 remake isn’t exactly the greatest cast ever assembled, but there aren’t any delusions about being more than they are. As an action film it’s easy and fun to watch, and it trims a lot of the unnecessary fat of the original story. It even leaves some room for sequels, not that there’s going to be any. In any case, a pleasant fun way to pass an hour and a half. 7/10

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024) *Spoilers ahead, if you care* I went into this with a very open mind, but I can’t ignore everything I’ve ever known about good filmmaking and pretend this movie was worthwhile. To put it bluntly, it sucked like few movies I’ve seen in recent times and left me, for the duration I was able to remain awake during the movie, feeling mentally raped.

The entire script was made up entirely of excerpts from the cliché playbook; every one-liner, schmaltzy trope and plug-in platitude I’ve seen a thousand times, all strung together into a tapestry of head-splitting special effects laden bullshit.

As for the cast, Keanu Reeves, who can barely deliver a legible sentence, couldn’t rise to the occasion even from a sound booth (shocker), and even Jim Carrey, who made the last Sonic movie tolerable, couldn’t resurrect this mess because, without direction, writing and editing, a movie is doomed before any scene is ever committed to film.

With all the tools available now, movies should be better than ever, but technology is used instead as a crutch to avoid actual writing and artistry. But don’t worry, despite the fact that the filmmakers phoned the whole thing in, they DID manage to stick resolutely to the Hollywood checklist of art-destroying BS required to get the requisite pat on the head and assure widespread distribution. Too bad they minimized any involvement of Amy Rose, she being an engaging girl with actual femininity (thus decidedly NOT on the checklist), and present us instead with a boring monotone of a nearly all-male cast guaranteed to please only the Boys-Under-8 crowd of moviegoers.

On the plus side, our intrepid band of generic adventurers did manage to save the world…oh, well, they destroyed the moon which will pretty much destroy the world anyway, but it worked as a lame punch-line so I can forgive anything.

What pains me the most, aside from sitting through this corn-encrusted crap-fest is the fact that there will be sequels and sequels and sequels to come, with no end in sight, and audiences gobbling it up without holding anyone to a higher standard. Just shoot me now. 2/10
